Hitachi create 100GB four layer Blu-ray disc

Hitachi have developed a prototype 100GB four layer Blu-Ray disc. TDK and Panasonic had also created such discs, but they required specially developed optical heads to read the disc. Hitachi however say that have used a standard optical head that has been slightly modified to read and write data. It is believed exsiting drives will only require a firmware update to be compatible. Hitachi are trying to stabalise the signal quality before considering releasing the discs.

quote:

The hardware manufacturer is also researching an eight layer disc that can hold 200GB of data but has encountered problems with reflections decreasing signal strength across the eight layers, which it is working to rectify.

At the time of going to press there is no word on when the disc will be ready for commercial release.

With nothin but a firmware release thats some powerful shit for the future.

You got blu-ray Jagi?

..

nope

just following where its all going

i dont buy many dvds

but i would like to see who comes out on top

this will mean:

being able to fit a full season of Family Guy on one disc.

hard drives that hold 700 gigs.

ONLY NEEDING a FIRMWARE UPGRADE????
This is the kind of news that could put Blu Ray on the map. This could save the PS3.

That so far has been my approach, got DVDs but got a DVD player with progressive scanning, hook up a component cable to the hi def tv and shit is crystal.... obviously not blu-ray or HD-DVD but I ain't puttin no money down yet.

Dude is right though, they do that with ps3 and their games get a lot more detailed, but I doubt they will, that would mean there ain't no room for ps4..

theres not supposed to be one for a long time

look at how long the ps2 lasted/is lasting

sony hopes to make the ps3 last even longer

with this size dvds though another possibility is to put a couple of games on one dvd like the neo geo did, say ea's basketball, football and baseball game released on one dvd for X price would surely sell well

also if a firmware upgrade is all, and ps3 can handle it, i read in another article that ps3 doesnt need the firmware upgrade it can already read a few versions of the recorded versions cheap player indeed
