Democratic presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton announced during a campaign stop in Iowa that she would shut down nearly 50,000 public schools if elected president. Her comments at the event were broadcast by NBC.

“This school district, and these schools throughout Iowa, are doing a better than average job,” Hillary Clinton said during a campaign event at a school in Keota, Iowa, on Tuesday. “Now, I wouldn’t keep any school open that wasn’t doing a better than average job.”



“If a school’s not doing a good job, then, you know, that may not be good for the kids,” she continued. Clinton did not elaborate on how a school doing a poor job could possibly be good for the kids.


According to U.S. Department of Education statistics, there were just over 98,000 public schools in the U.S. as of the 2011-2012 school year, the most recent year for which complete data are available. Under Hillary Clinton’s proposed education plan to shutter all average and below average schools, that would mean that nearly 50,000 schools would have to be shut down, assuming that the median and average national school performance were roughly equal.

Nearly two-thirds of those schools targeted by Clinton’s proposal–over 30,000–would be elementary schools.

Iowa has more than 500,000 students enrolled in public K-12 schools in the state, according to estimates by the National Education Association (NEA), a national teachers’ union. The NEA estimates that 35,000 teachers are employed by the Iowa public school system.

During her remarks, Clinton did not state which specific performance metrics she would use to determine whether a school was performing adequately, nor did she say where children who had been attending average or below-average schools shut down by her administration could go for their educational needs.

If the kids get to go to a school in a nicer part of town it might change their attitudes.

Again, the kids that live in the nicer part of town will have the advantage of extra rest when compared to the kids coming in from poorer sections due to having been bused in.

On top of that, schools are part of a neighborhoods fabric. If schools are failing, then more than likely the neighborhood is failing as well. Instead of helping these neighborhoods and schools with improvements they quickly voice that they should instead be closed.

For profit or "not for profit" they will have non Union teachers, most of whom will be rehired younger public schools teachers who need the job and young bright eyed white kids from orgs like Teach for America. All will be non Union, the TFAers, "the reformers" will do their two years then move into a leadership position at the charter school or in the local TFA office having not done anything but a) drink the TFA Kool aid and b) survive and not burn out.

Go look at the principal and leadership of your local charter schools and tell me how many are TFA alums?

Clinton and the Repubs win because the same orgs that run the charter networks donate HUGE dollars to their campaigns. Why do you think the Waltons, the Gates, etc LOVE charter schools so much? They will provide the labor for new buildings, the computes and technology, the uniforms, the food, the books.....they will make big dollars....ALL from taxpayers.

With the union crushed, urban education will be in the hands of business people who need curtain numbers (students) to maintain profitability. When that doesn't happen and they've bled the taxpayers dry they will close up and go find another poor community to set up shop in. At this point with the urban schools bled dry they'll move into rural areas to help "close the achievement gap".

Mark my words this is her masterplan.
