Here's Martin Luther King Jr. Telling A Joke On The Tonight Show

OK, it's not a good joke, but the man was busy. It was Feb. 8, 1968, and Martin Luther King Jr. and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference were in the thick of planning the Poor People's Campaign, which would culminate in a tent city going up on the Mall in Washington. It was also just two months before King was assassinated in Memphis.

Though this was well into the Johnny Carson era of Tonight, Carson was off that week—Harry Belafonte, singer, actor, activist, and confidant of King's, served as guest host. Here's an SCLC release announcing King's appearance. Also on that show: Nipsey Russell and Paul Newman.

The video above appears to be the only clip of King's Tonight Show appearance to survive, at least outside of the NBC vault. But if you're into him making the talk show rounds, here's his full appearance on The Merv Griffin Show in 1967.

I spoke to one of Malcolm's daughter and asked her what ar some things that she wished the world knew about her father that is never talked about or portrayed, she said three things, 1- the man had a huge sense of humor and wasn't the serious guy you see all the time, 2- Him and Martin were a lot closer than people realize she really was upset on the notion that the two were at odds with each other, all the time and 3- She and her fam ripped the Spike Lee version of the movie claiming that Spike used a lot of Langston Hughes script, he was working on Malcolm, before he died, and yet he never gave him any credit while leaving out a few key points that the family wanted in.

Malaak... My impression was that she (and the family) had a big grudge against Spike... And she did come off as a little bitter about how Malcolm and his legacy was handled after his death.. But she did say that her moms and family had to fight hard to protect his name and his assets.. But out of all of his children Malaak is the most fiery and has a lot of mannerism of her father..

Wow... King killed that communist question... All of you should listen to it. It's at the end of the second vid on the mere show.
