HBO: The Leftovers

Show is real painful but I'll give it one more episode. I think I'm really holding on to the hope that the mayor actually gets naked... That would be awesome.

Its funny, why did they show that trailer of the season after episode 3?

I wonder if its because they see that there are ppl who are gonna check out but might stay around after seeing that.

The guy who wrote the book says there will be no explanation as to how/why the people disappeared

Fuck him then. I won't waste my time with this bullshit

My one wish in life: "I want to die and be reincarnated as a rich and famous athlete, because Finger and Jay threads have too many simp worthy hoes".

Looks like the US is being invaded by ex-Dr Who's.

After watching the first 3 episodes I figured out this much:

I can watch damn near anything as long as it doesn't have commercial breaks. If this had a commercial break every 4-6 mins I would have tossed this to the side. I feel like I am being trolled each episode.

I started watching Davincis Demons and while the first 5 mins of the series was "wild mo" I have found something to hold me over until something else comes along.

Commercial breaks are a thing of the past, during sports & news I can tolerate but during a show they take you all out of the groove you are in. The Leftovers on any basic network would've died after the pilot.

So he thinks it's divine that he won the money, but stops to help the white cult and they buy the church

The bitch nigga at the table, I knew he was a scam

Next week gon be nuts,

Ok they got me for another week

I thought the last episode was great.Gave you enough of the character's history so you cared about his plight. Those beautiful rolls of money.

Same here, and Christopher Eccleston did a really convincing Western NY dialect.

Not sure if he did it on purpose, or it was just his method to cover his British accent?

Man just when me and wifey was gonna say fuck this show, and move on..here comes this episode..

Shit was Very well done, focusing solely on the minister was a departure from the usual format and really changed the initial perception of him..we went from having contempt for him and thinking he was a sanctimonious, holier than thou dickhead to having empathy for him and rooting for him to get through his situation successfully..I forgot that was him screaming for help, carrying his wife in the first episode during the scene of the baby disappearance

They've got me for another week

episode four

I pretty much hate everybody
apart from kevin and the twins

i want christine to die

Christine is the wife of the cop right?

The cult is ridiculous......and the daughter needed a beaten 4 years ago....

chrisitne is the underaged asian girl carrying the baby

yeah the daughter needs a serious belting

tat cult needs to be put down...i find out they stole my fams pictures
and robbed me on xmas eve, i'm coming for all of them

I still don't know what the hell? They're breaking into peoples houses to steal their family ties? Yet the cops wife clearly is having trouble with her life style decision. Clearly, there is a part of her that thinks its all bullshit.

So tonight they went back to the trippy, mysterious shit...At least we got to see the mayor's legs...briefly...Something about that slim frame...She could definitely get it all day...Hopefully we'll see more about her character and less about those damn teenagers, the damn dogs and boring-ass Liv Tyler.

lol i aint watching the show but page 3 and yall niggas still confused lol

didn't read all the responses yet...

but I read the book awhile back and actually called it on here that it would be an interesting premise.

I saw the first episode and its loyal as hell to the book and is going thru the natural progressions.

Its one of those shows you are going to have to just ACCEPT the premise for now and wait a few episodes.

Initially we the viewers are supposed to feel just as confused and off balance as the character on the show.

What are they the cigarette cult? They always smoking

How is it they can beat up a cop for being there, but no one beats them up for standing outside their houses?

They smoke as a fuck you to society and to life. And they are not allowed to interact directly with the outside world or even talk to each other or associate with anyone from their former life.

They are essentially ghosts, reminders of what happened. The Guilty Remnan Meant to provoke the others who are clinging to a former now meaningless existence.

I don''t want to explain to much because I don't know how loyal they will continue to be to the book (and like I said so far its pretty exact) but the Liv Tyler character is going to be our eyes into THAT cult and the Chef's son will be our eyes into the OTHER cult.

And the Chef's daughter will show us how the kids and other forgotten people are dealing day to day with the what happened.

And 'Doctor Who' is basically the embodiment of those who were left behind who refuse to believe that the departed were chosen by God into heaven because THAT would mean that THEY therefore were sinners & the damned. They were left out of the Rapture.

hopefully no Lost-type BS is pulled since Damon Lindelof is involved..

I'm glad to see hbo entering the science fiction genre, and yeah lets hope they don't follow Lost

^^^^

I initially DID NOT want gonna watch this because the guy behind LOST (and Prometheus I think) was behind this and I knew there would be flashbacks and the potential for a bullshit ending.

But Peter Berg directed the pilot and they have some great actors on there so I decided to give it a shot.

And in the book the REASON for disappearance isn't really discussed at length and we never learn the truth.

So this isn't for everyone.

But I enjoyed the show and think this is were Damon will thrive because he can concentrate more on THAT mystery and because the characters are so well defined in the book already.

btw...the mayor is fine.

The Leftovers Is the Worst Show I've (Maybe) Ever Seen

Sunday night I may have watched the worst television program I've ever seen; if I had to kiss an old rat to get that hour back of my life I would pucker the fuck up, but because I can't, I'm going to have to settle for a digital rant.

While I'm no T.V. head (I don't own one and use my parents' HBOGO subscription to glean the crack when I need it), I'm no stranger to the joys of the flickering box. There was even a time when I looked forward to watching Rock of Love every Sunday night, so I've sullied my mind and free-time with the best of them.

Last night I was over at my pal Melissa's and she was all excited about the pilot for the Leftovers. The show boasts a powerful media pedigree, beginning with its adaptation from a novel written by Tom Perrotta coupled with showrunner Damon Lindelof, who worked on Lost. Oh, and the first two episodes were directed by Peter Berg of Friday Night Lights, who's no stranger to small-town misery.

I had already told her I felt at best lukewarm; the posters were all over the NYC subway, (like the one with hunky and miserable Sheriff Garvey (Justin Thoreux) plowing his fist into plaster.

It just felt so overwrought. (Not to mention I kind of hate the title altogether; it conjures up day-old greasy food you'll never eat again.) But I was sunburned and sleepy, and there was popcorn, a sofa and a cutest pitbull on my lap you've ever seen. I was in a convincible sort of mood. I suspended my judgment.

Let's start with the opening scene--which should have been the most terrifying thing on the goddamn planet (2 percent of the world's population simply vanishes!)--and instead, felt like the wet hiss of a miserable whistling kettle. Urgent, yes, but mostly because if you think you hear that woman scream for her vaporized baby one more time--sam! Sam! SAAAAAM!--you're going to break a window.

We soon meet the too-good-looking local sheriff, played by the painfully brooding Justin Theroux. His golden-hearted son seems to be a errand boy for a mysterious black mystique (the only person with some acting chops on the whole damn show). His daughter, Jill (played by the pretty if petulant Margaret Qualley) is a neo-Angela Chase (from My So-Called Life), all red pouting lips, plaid shirts and high school angst, without any of the charm or actual awkwardness that accompanies adolescence.

She and her father seem to be suffering over the loss of their wife/mother, and the tautness of their sorrow is explored--where else?--at the dinner table. Oh, and yes, Jill even has an "edgier" best friend--complete with a fringed halter top and ombred hair, a parred down, not-so-wise or compelling knock-off of Angela's free-spirited pal Rayanne Graff.

Moving on.

The two girls head to one of those, "everybody's invited!" high school parties where the viewers are supposed to be disturbed at the drug use and promiscuity--which includes a depraved game of "spin the iPhone" complete with commands like "fuck" and "choke." I'm not kidding. Our oh-so-detached Jill heads into a bedroom to choke a friend of hers while he masturbates beside her. And like a bad PSA, one single tear slides down her face as he ejaculates. Melissa and I turned to each other. "Wow. Did you ever attend a party like that in high school?" And we burst out laughing.

Then there's the whole cult thing happening in town, the "Guilty Remnants" or GRs. It's still more-than-nebulous, but it seems that in the wake of everyone disappearing, a particularly disturbed group of individuals decided to band together, dress in all white, take a vow of silence and chain-smoke. No, really. Like in every scene the entire silent cult is chain-smoking. And of course, we discover that Jill's mother didn't disappear . . . she joined the cult! The obligatory "reveal" scene is the sheriff quaffing too many beers before screaming her name outside the lawn of the cult's house. "Come home!" he begs. "No . . ." She stares. It's "riveting" stuff.

Then there's 'ol sexy puffer-lips Liv Tyler (the shell-shocked Meg Abbott), who's patented breathy lisp just isn't as sexy at 36. She sounds stunted or maybe a little drunk. Empire Records was her high point as far as I'm concerned.

And in the backdrop of all of this, there is a pending parade--Heroes Day--in which the town will honor those who have disappeared. The sheriff is convinced all hell is going to break loose and tries to convince the mayor--played by Amanda Warren--in an overly banter-y exchange to "call it off." (Oh. And this mayor seems to be one of two black women in the entire town. I'm sorry but one African-American woman in a pink power-suit does not diversity make.) And guys, you won't believe it but Heroes Day doesn't go well--in fact it devolves into a riot between the cult and the townsfolk. Can you believe it?! I mean, the foreshadowing was just so subtle.

Did we mention then there are also violent, jarring flashbacks including one with Sheriff Garvey in a bar? A woman asks, "So where were you when it happened?" (Which I suppose is some like clever nod to JFK's assassination or 9/11?) The camera flashes into Garvey's bedroom where he's sweatily pile-driving someone (hopefully his wife?). The camera flashes back and he mutters, "Oh, I was cleaning out a gutter." If that's not some latent women-hatin' shit, I don't know what is.

Between the abysmal (over)acting, the alternatively piano-laden/distorted guitar soundtrack, and the I'd-never-believe-this dialogue . . . there's no brilliant sci-fi plot on earth that could resurrect this painfully god-awful project.

that pastor episode was perfect 50 min capsule of the entirety of the show's conceit.

for better or for worse.

I don't think HBO will be renewing this and it should...

its odd that religious groups are going crazy over Black Jesus and NOT this?

The last two episodes have pulled me back in. I was ready to give up on it after the first 3 episodes

Y'all cats hating on the daughter cause she widin out, but real talk she in a fucked up situation. She got a Mom's who basically walked out on the family because of some cult shit, but she still has to see her around town, only she can't talk to her or even get a real explanation from her about why she left.

Tonight was the second time ole girl reverted straight back to little girl state when her mom was involved or she thought something happened to her. That's some serious repressed emotion she dealing with.

Also, the chick who is the leader of guilty remnant do more acting without talking that most actors do with hours of dialog. I don't know who she is but she's killing it.

This show got a lot of questions, that need answering, but they got me hooked in enough to keep watching.

I'm definitely want to find out what's up with this Black hat government group that seems to be a Cult clean up squad.

Her friend ain't shit:lol:

Fuck coffee bitch, put on some clothes, I have that coffee when you turn 18

I can't stand this show, but the ol lady likes it so I suffer it. It's one thing to be mysterious, it's another to be intentionally convoluted to the point of annoyance.
