HBO - O.G. starring Jeffrey Wright

Meh...

Jail flicks.

Shawshank Redemption and some others are good jail flicks. This was boring.

I mean nothing happened. No one got shot. No one got stabbed. No one killed. No Shawshank tension I mean....as you said Meh

This Beach dude. Are we supposed to care about him? He's doing a 25 year stint. Its not like he's out in a year and need to turn his life around.

You know what I hate these the only movies we do are slave, prison and civil right movies, but this looks really good! And Jefferey Wright is always gonna act his ass off!

You left out drug dealers movies, rap movies and "magical negro" films.
But I agree. I like Jeffrey Wright and this does look interesting.

:confused::confused::confused:

Sorry to Bother You
Black Panther
Creed franchise
Get Out
Spider-Man into the Spiderverse (one of the directors was black)
Us
Magnificent 7 (Denzel remake)
Spike Lee's filmography
Tyler Perry's movies (don't watch his shit, but to my knowledge he's never made a civil rights movie, slave movie, drug dealer movie or rap movie)

Just a small and mostly recent sample that debunks the "we only make _______" myth. :dunno:

I think you missed the point of our posts, my friend. o_O

Neither of us were saying that the genres we mentioned were the ONLY types of films that are made by Blacks in Hollywood.
We were pointing out that; traditionally, those genres are at the forefront of Black themed or films starring Blacks being produced by studios and marketed towards general audiences on the whole and towards Blacks in particular.

Furthermore; as you yourself already pointed out, the majority of the films you posted here have only come out in the last 2 years. Hardly what I'd consider a sample of films that "debunks" an OVER 100 year history of films that Hollywood has made that has damaged (and continues to damage) the psyche, the well being and the standing of Blacks all over the world... :dunno:

Trying to say that these genres of movies are still being made in mass quantities. I do appreciate the dialog though.

Saw a play back in the day in NYC called Top Dog Under Dog with just him and Mos Def been following his work since..very underrated actor in my opinion...

I remember reading about that. Mos replaced Don Cheadle (left to do a film) if memory serves.

Okay. I took the words that were written too seriously I suppose. Because "ONLY" was used.

It's true I used mostly recent examples...because those were the ones that came to mind at the time. But it goes without saying there are other examples I could've given. Heh, I mean I did include Spike, and his filmography alone stretches back decades.

I understand what you're saying bro. I really do.
(And PLEASE do not take this as me coming at you negatively).
But, Hollywood built its very structure on portraying negative images of Blacks and minorities as a rule.
The PRIMARY film to begin this practice was this one:
The-Birth-Of-A-Nation--1915-.jpg

The concepts portrayed by this one film almost 100 years ago, are STILL the basis for many long held beliefs and practices in the world on how films are made today.
As a result of this one film, (very popular film at the time) the way Blacks were put on the big screen was forever damaged.
Concepts like:
- The lazy, shiftless fried chicken & watermelon eating negro.
- Violent, Black male rapists lusting after White women.
- Black people are stupid, suspicious and cowardly.
- Black Mammies who love the White man and his family but who beat down and diminish their own families and Black men in particular.
- Tragic mulattoes who are not to be trusted.
- The "noble" White male hero in the KKK protecting White womanhood.

Many of these concepts are still very evident and still at play today in movies featuring Blacks today...

So; my friend while you can provide but a handful of films that you feel addresses the positive changes in Black representation in Hollywood, I can pull up countless examples of films over the past 100 years that fall into the genres/categories we are tired of seeing Hollywood put out as Outsyder and I were originally discussing... :smh:

I don't disagree with your point about hollyweird and its portrayal of black folks.

Again it seems I took the words originally posted too seriously. It said 'the only movies "WE" do', which is why the movies I listed were movies made by black folks (meaning either written or directed, and sometimes both). I wasn't speaking about the larger hollyweird portrayal of black folks. I'd have to be either living under a rock or a Kanye/Sheriff Clark level idiot to think everything is on the up and up in that regard. :giggle:

LOL...
No harm, no foul, my man.
I understand exactly where you're coming from.
You definitely come across as an intelligent, insightful person.

We're just choppin' it up a little bit.
Peace... :D
