HBO: Insecure -- Season 5 Official Discussion Thread (Final Season)

Just got caught up...regarding Issa and Nathan...Nathan asked her when they were laying in bed if this felt real to her...and while she said yes...i think he don't like how she gave that response...it almost seemed like she was BS'ing him...they cut back to him it seemed like he was kinda disappointed in her answer...i dont know, thats just my theory and why he ghosted on her...i think he really cared about her..

I don’t know what to say to that in bold... re: pride tho...it’s easy for that shit to fall when it’s false...the show is called “insecure” (I’m not saying this to be facetious or condescending)...she’s never been really prideful imo...she put up a front like a lot of ppl do...now she’s seeing what good it’s done for her and she’s humbled

*edit*

also re: lawrence...I thought he was angling to hit shorty up initially but he was really soul searching after just running thru bitches to his own detriment...ppl do that in different ways...shit I had to have a serious look in the mirror a few months back when I felt I was going overboard...I was LUCKY to come away unscathed but for the first time I was truly worried about the potential consequences...and had to dig deep and question myself and some of the decisions I make re: women and fortunately I just had nothing but time to just get back in touch w/ myself...question my motives and ask myself some serious shit...but most importantly establish what changes I had to make...for a lot of men (not saying all...not saying most) they run thru women w/ no regard...some grow out of it by their 30s...some later...some never...depending on where you fall it can take its toll on you eventually...dude is a professional man in his 30s having to explain to a doctor he has the clap that he got from bitches he barely likes/respects...that shit ain’t cool...he may not need jesus but he need something lol

This may sound corny...but I think what he "needs" is someone like Issa...i dont think he's ever gotten over Issa cheating on him with Daniel...even though we as men try to act all hard..i think that while he has everything going for him physically and financially...emotionally, he may not have gotten past that yet...i think when they were sitting in the coffee shop, that that whole thing meant more to him than anything...because she keeps him grounded..

I hate to sound cornier but having someone in your corner who you get along w/ ...have a real connection w/ and want to build w/ is better than fucking 10 random ho’s maybe even 100

The equation quality> than quantity is true?

Once your objectives change absolutely
If you just want to conquest then its not true.
If you are the type to never get tired of conquest then it'll never be true.
If you "date" for a minute then realize a constant is way better than an unknown then it becomes alarmingly true.
A true connection is better than all the new pussy because due to the connection you'll believe and more importantly FEEL its the BEST pussy.
and pussy without THAT type of bond attached to it just isn't worth it ... chasing it or losing it.

Great episode and season finale. I love the show for its comedy, music, and realism.

Molly should’ve let Issa have closure with Nathan.

It’s sucks for Molly that she can’t get along with her coworkers. She just can’t catch a break.

I’m most proud of Lawrence moving on and living life.

And I fuckin wish I could go to a Last Dragon lawn party

She can catch a break but she wants to live in a world of broken things. Her idea of success is warped.

Why is she so worried about making partner? Go start your own firm!

Son lost any interest when he found issa was still a day dreaming ole hoe.

Lol @ chad and the gang going to Lawrence’s new bust down event at a graveyard. Buried that dead ass hoe Issa.

Season ending was lackluster. Have a ninja ghost for a month to come back with an excuse like that is a red flag and a lie. Anybody ghost on me you're just a dead body. The fact that she entertained that ninja made it cringeworthy too. Molly did the right thing by making him fuck off.
I think this show is exaggerating a bit especially with Molly's work situation. I know you will bump head with people at work across the board but not at that magnitude at a black law firm. I work in media (formally the ad agency side of it) which is predominantly white and it's a hotbed for petty bullshit. White people (white women) from the midwest + black person (BLACK MALE) = disaster. My old jobs with minorities I never experienced dumb shit or feared for losing my job.

I don't get the impression she is worried about loosing her job. The firm let her run solo with a major client.

I think she's worried about being isolated both in her professional and private life.

the subtle look he gave when she told him she was giving up, said alot. The only thing I wasn't sure was why he responded that way. Was it damn, now I know how Issa felt about me and my app? Or was it, fuck her, she wasn't there to give me the support I needed when I hit a rough patch with my app.

The convo with his dad about people giving up too easily. If Issa wasn't willing to stick to her goals the minute things got tough, he probably thought the same would happen if they got back together.

Peace,

So perfect
Lawrence is upgraded so he's gotta try upgraded Issa

Torian turned the whole crew against Molly though lol

Lawrence
Chad
Kelli
Issa

just equal air time for all of them and the show is golden

They leaned very heavily on Chad and Kelli (obvious fan favorites and comic relief) because the writing was extremely weak this season. As much as everyone likes them, their sudden emergence indicates that the show runners are running out of ideas. Not a good sign given that the season only consisted of eight episodes.

I agree with this assessment

8 eps 30 minutes
And no real arc to the season.

I don’t get it. I have to assume that this has to do with the schedule that HBO makes its show runners adhere to. The writers must not have time to truly develop a cohesive narrative that invests in the development of all of the central characters. Seems like it would be a lot more manageable with 8 eps though so I’m just grasping at straws.

Anyway, you should write for them Bills.

It's definitely not HBO ballers is still going and their arc is incredible will multiple fleshed out characters in fact it's so that 4 main characters are leading 4 separate but intertwined lives

I'd like to write for insecure for sure

Kinda disagree here. Issa went from bumming on Daniel's couch to having a place of her own and being less likely to lean on a dude for emotional support. Lawrence went from meaningless hook-ups to looking for a serious relationship and accepting someone who isn't 100% perfect. Molly started off with her dream job and quickly became the office pariah. She humbled herself and took full responsibility for her hurt-them-before-they-hurt me-attitude.

There was definitely some know better, (eventually) do better this season. Characters in Season 3 had clear arcs, but did it really need 8 episodes to tell them? I'd say no. You could edit it down to a 2 hour (4 episodes) romantic comedy and not miss much. Lawrence's arc was the strongest because it was completed in a few episodes. The Daniel/Issa stuff could have been handled in one episode instead of three. They spent too much time on him, introducing characters in his orbit and it never payed off. That time would have been better served fleshing out Kelly and Tiffany. On another note, I prefer Due North over Kev'yn.

Overall, I thought Season 3 was solid. Nowhere near the newness of Season 1 though. I do get why some people were disappointed. No high-fuckery cliffhanger in the finale. Nathan didn't turn out to be a felon on the run, Tiffany had a normal delivery off-screen, Molly didn't get her ass beat by Candace for messing with Dro, Issa didn't get pregnant by Nathan or Daniel, etc. It just ended with people living their lives, which is cool but can make for boring television.

The arcs weren't strong imo
It felt like shit just kinda happened as opposed to seeing it happen
I know in life things just kind of happen but that's how it looks to the outside the inside relevance and access is what we tune in for.

Issa story is the closest to being completed

Nobody else they literally did a montage on Lawrence then he just arrived where he was in the finale

It wasn't trash at all that's not the argument

We're basically saying the same thing. I don't think the arcs were strong either. Disagree with you on the Lawrence part. He got sick of emotionally unfulfilling sex and the STI scare made him reevaluate his life. Church wasn't the answer. For a while he entertained the idea of getting back with Issa, but once she showed signs of backsliding into her old ways, he bounced. The event planner chick has her shit together and looks like someone he can build with. That's a pretty tight arc to me in 3 episodes. Issa's 8 episode arc had a lot of meandering.

My comment about people being disappointed wasn't directed at any specific person, just some viewers in general.

Some of the criticisms of this Season 3 are fair. However, I don't know how some people can conclude it's a result of the writers not having a plan or running out of ideas. Writing is not an exact science. You can carefully plan something out, feel like it's the best thing ever, only to be met with indifference. If pointing out obvious flaws and providing common sense solutions were so easy, we'd have a lot more hit shows and movies.

You are correct. I will take it one step further. She already did that when she cheated on him. During one of their arguments about what happened, she threw out there how she was tired of supporting his depressed ass. It's interesting to see how the tables have turned one year later.
