HBO: Insecure -- Season 5 Official Discussion Thread (Final Season)

Well, as I said, I think there was a missed opportunity with Molly's situation. Let's be real, she was being superficial! She'd rather be Dro's little secret then the established brotha who is a lawyer with his shit together but he's a big boy? I don't knowwwwww!!!! There was a message in there somewhere that they missed or didn't deliver.

My homegirl is trying to sell me on the idea that Lil Rel just didn't put it down, but nahhhhhh I'm not buying it. Molly didn't want to fuck with dude from jump, she had to force herself to throw him the box

I thought this point was made. And I really like how they that was written.
For the looks I thought it was obvious because they were complete opposites in height and physical shape. The added thing is that Dro was much more assertive in their interactions while the lawyer was acting like he was nervous. Molly was forcing the attraction so likely wouldn't find the sex as good.

I'm really impressed with the writing but IMO it was real unrealistic for a dude to open his heart like that when she was the one caught cheating. Our egos just wouldn't let us.
It is much easier being someone's sidechick than being their WOMAN. Dro don't want Molly but he makes her forget about her insecurities while they are together. That's alot for a woman. Molly's little fan boy may be a better dude but he makes her think of how she may not be enough at the same time.

This nigga is wise ya'll better listen to this man.

By the time Lawrence moved out he wasn't broke he had a good job.
He stayed with his friend cause he was hurt not cause he couldn't afford a place. As soon as he got some get up he found his spot like that.. Issa the one that got demoted and didn't get the promotion and got gentrified.
I'm sure Lawrence could afford to stay in the dunes if he wanted to
I think he meant when the show started

Regarding video above:

The "ho-tation" doesn't last really long for most women under 30 - at some point, she will want more from one of the individuals OR she'll realize she's engaging in the behavior to fill a void elsewhere in her life. Also, societal pressures give in, and you start thinking, "Damn, I should be married with kids by now." And, as you see friends and family get married around you, you realize not all hoes are getting wifed up...always an exception, but definitely not the norm.

Also, not all women go through a "ho-tation." Some find love early - in high school, college, etc. and really don't get to experience that free a period UNLESS tragedy strikes, like a divorce. I think this is where middle age and older women become the "wildcard," because they can engage in the hoe activities without much grievance because they're smarter and have more of an idea of what they want too. Also, the chances of having a child out of wedlock fall substantially...BUT, the rates at which STDs occur with this population did increase, so there's that...

My co-worker, who's been married 20+ years, 5 kids, been with her husband since college...she always says, if something happened, she wouldn't get married again. Just date and have fun. I think many "older women" take the same stance - most of the time, it's only the ones who haven't ever been married who want to get married, at some point.

Marriage seems to always be a "one shot" thing with most people nowadays. My parents and their peers always talking about their 1st or maybe 2nd marriages yet my peers(20's) say if the shit doesn't work out then they'll just become hoes basically. I don't get the satisfaction of "having fun" as a old head. Who wants to be 50 and coming home to an empty bed? To each his own.

‘Insecure’ Season 2 Finale: Prentice Penny on Issa, Lawrence, Safe Sex and Narrative Swerves

    By LEIGH-ANN JACKSON SEPT. 10, 2017

The season started with a glimmer of hope for Issa and Lawrence, then their relationship burns to the ground. In the end, you show what they could have been, just before showing her back at Daniel’s door. How do you think viewers will handle this narrative swerve?

People have seen the “will they/won’t they” couple. Our thing was, how do we erase that and completely get away from it? We keep you on your toes because, if you watch a lot of TV, you think you know what’s going to happen. When you see that Lawrence and Issa montage, I think you are kind of heartbroken. So at the end, when you see Issa at Daniel’s, I love that fans don’t know how to feel!

When you appeared on the post-show segment “Wine Down”after the first episode, you said you identified with both Issa and Lawrence. Does that still hold true?

In my younger days, I was definitely a Lawrence. I was that “feel some type of way” kinda guy. I think now, I’m much more like Derek. Maybe it’s because I’m married and he just has a more grown wisdom to him.

The show speaks to a very specific demographic of young, urban, black professionals. Why do you think it’s had such universal appeal?

If I knew, I would be trying to clone that thing! Obviously, our show is about people of color and there’s a lot of language and dialogue that, unless you know it, you’re gonna be like, “What are they talking about?” But I also think that at the core of it, it’s a very millennial show and it’s very woman-centric. You feel like these women genuinely care about each other and they feel like actual friends. I think that’s what people like. And I think Issa’s an amazing actress and her personality comes across on screen, so you root for her.

This idea that, with people of color, nobody watches them except their own — it’s a very outdated concept. Now, you have shows that are crossing those lines and people are just relating to what they relate to and vibing with what they vibe with.

In the finale, Lawrence, Derek and Chad reluctantly get engrossed in the show-within-a-show, “Due North.” It draws a parallel with male viewers who may have initially seen “Insecure” as just a show for women.

Totally. I remember when my then-girlfriend, now-wife was like, “We should watch this new show called ‘Girlfriends.’” I wasn’t trying to watch some show about black women bashing men! Then I watched the first few episodes and I was hooked, and even went to write for the show. If men watch the first episode of “Insecure,” they’re like, “See? Here we go. Lawrence is a bum!” Then, when they get to the end of that season, they’re “#LawrenceHive.” Dudes are just as invested in our show as women are.

I think it speaks to something, for black men to be able to see themselves on screen as something that isn’t hyper-sexualized, or rappers or entertainers. They’re seeing an honest reflection — they work, they got women, they’re trying to deal with racism.

There was plenty of sex in Season 2, particularly for a sitcom. When you put those scenes in, was there an intention behind it?

The first season, HBO was like, “This is a show about millennials and they have sex. Don’t be afraid to push it.” But I’ve never been in the writer’s room where we’ve gone, “O.K., we need a sex scene here.” We’ve never thrown it in there just for throwing-it-in-there’s sake. We’ve actually pulled moments out if it feels like we’re doing a sex scene that’s not organic to the story or the character in that moment.

Some viewers complained on Twitter about what they saw as a lack of safe sex.

We’re never promoting people having unprotected sex. We’re always assuming that our characters are being responsible, for the most part. But just like in real life, you’re not always responsible. It’s funny because in Episode 6, we have a whole scene about condoms when they’re at the Sexplosion event. And then, people thought we made that after the whole Twitter thing. Guys, TV doesn’t work that way!

I don’t know any other show where people are asking that. It’d be like watching “Power” — “Why doesn’t Ghost have a condom on?!” When I watch a show, I never ask that question. I guess people connect to the characters like real people. I would rather have people care enough to ask than not care and not watch the show.

How do you and Issa split the responsibilities of overseeing the show?

She and I will do everything from casting to rewriting the scripts to being on set giving notes. So it’s like this marriage. Everything we do, we’re doing together — from the germ of the idea to everything you see on the screen. She and I and Melina [Matsoukas, another executive producer] all push that rock up the hill.

Season 1 garnered so much acclaim. Did that affect how you approached the second season?

I think 90 percent of what we do is still the same. The first season, we didn’t have anything to compare it to. When the show started to do well, the instincts from outside were “How do we get bigger?” But our show [isn’t about] going over-the-top. We focus on how to tell stories about people of color that feel nuanced, sophisticated and smart.

From fashion to music, the show is constantly introducing new and emerging talent. Did you set out to be tastemakers?

It definitely was, in the beginning, a thing for us. Issa was wanting to find dope people who weren’t on the radar yet, like Kari Faux from last year and SZA this year. Issa and Melina have really great ears for that. Sometimes I just sit back and watch them, because I’m putting all Snoop in it, if it’s me!

What can we look forward to in Season 3?

I don’t know! Issa and I are getting together at the end of the month to talk about ideas. Hopefully, they’ll start making some better choices. I thought, for the most part, Issa made some really smart choices for the finale. I think she’s in a metamorphosis phase. It’s almost like her having to move out of the apartment is like a cocoon that had to open. What does that look like for her? Where does that character go?

Man this show got me Issa daydreamin the fuckin characters.

When molly was lookin at outfits, then walks to the door. I thought lawyer guy was gonna be there.

I was rootin for dude, molly a fuckin bitch, but hey hoe gonna hoe.

Man that's gonna take a long time to get over for Lawrence, 5yrs bein with someone, you make bonds.

The things nobody else sees about you that person sees, smells.

Learn to live with regrets

Life's a bitch.

The music was fuckin dope the whole way.

They say it takes double the length of the relationship to get over someone

I think it was cool because in his mind it was the final conversation.

That's why I said let the marriage stuff go for now she don't want that
That's 2 dudes this year that were successful liked her and no reason for her not to really give it a try other than superficial reasons

I kinda get it, but like I told my home girl after last season. I'm like Lawrence, and to me loyalty is everything. So I don't care if we been at it since the 5th grade. You cheat, that's it. Had she just broke it off, they could've worked through it. So I feel him on 1 last convo. But... I'm taking zero blame!!! I ain't Trump, and it wasn't blame on both sides. She cheated cause he wasn't perfect and hit a rough patch. He can admit hus flaws, but everything else gets laid at her feet. But as lot of women ain't really built for the ups and downs. They're front runners, but that ain't how love works.

But shout out to Jo, for sticking with her husband and helping him through it. Believe me, he appreciates it.

I don't think he was taking blame he was just getting how he was feeling off his chest.
How he was feeling sorry for himself and everything that was happening then.

Random thoughts on the Insecure season finale... sorry its a lowkey long post!

Lawrence: Bruh let his patnas talk him into jealousy. Dood prolly still reeling from his Jesus Shuttlesworth threesome debacle. I hated to see his ego get the best of him with the Indian Alicia Keys. Buddy was intimidated by the super square tech white cat. Thinking every woman is gonna be deceitful because of one bad apple is bad form. When I use the phrase "hoe cake" Lawrence's behavior in the car was the perfect example of this euphemism. He redeemed himself at the end by exploring his veiled emotions and ending it on a good note with candid transparency. He should have ended it on the “ The Spook who sat by the door” tip… “Baby let’s end things right” and bashed Issas brains out one more time on the couch….but the Brian Mcknight energy in him wouldn’t let him sav out…Its all good Lawrence, cry that thang out fam...

Issa: I wish they would have explored her breakdown at the end of the previous episode a little further. A microcosm on how we treat mental health in the Black community. Just move on drink wine, things be fine. Since all this DACA drama I look at Issas relationship with the Hispanic students mirroring Black society’s relationship with the Latino community at large. The Mexican students shit on Issa and the program, at first feigning this alliance but then stealing and bouncing with the food once their needs were met. (Sound familiar) Principle who was indeed an asshole tells her you stick with ya own people we got our own problems, but the white colleague start pulling those Maat heart strings coaxing her to ride for the Brown. Issa acquiesces ends up getting demoted for trying to help other people. At the end of the day there is no such thing as Black/Brown unity. Wasn’t sure what the whole Daniel thing was, did she move in with bruh? Or are they finna start they own relationship? At least she forgave him cuzz she was way outta pocket on how she reacted to that eye shot. Betta put a Slick Rick patch on and keep it moving. If she was real she would have swallowed then gave that big ass smile exclaiming “WE got Yall”

Molly: Her law firm gave her one of those certificates like she was the best ping pong player at the boys and girls club….lmao smh…. I was rooting for Lil Rell… But obviously he wasn’t default handsome so I knew when his stick game was just par he wasn’t gonna get invited to the Masters. I aint with that “hes a nice guy you should settle cause hes a good man and he makes you laugh” logic. Same doods who spew that propaganda is the same thing as women telling me that I should deal with a sista who looks like Gwendolyn Brooks because shes a good woman, nice and loyal.. nigga please! I knew when she was getting ready with the sexy lingerie it wasnt for Lil Rells character. Women don’t be doing all that extra shit for niggas who keep their t shirt on in the pool. Fight club man breasts aren’t the bizz fam... Molly's character is proof that the smartest woman can become unraveled by charisma a strong mouthpiece and a vicious stick game. Read all the Bell and Lorde you want that shit goes out the window when you lonely.

LA: Interestingly enough my favorite character in the whole show is the city of Los Angeles. If you don’t understand the culture of La you miss a lot of the nuances of the show. From the hyper gentrification of I wood to the reality of niggas still gang banging after 30… If you not familiar with La you prolly would charge those things to the game of satire. The sad reality is niggas still bang like that and they teach their children to bang like that. We laugh at ole boy replacing Cs with Bs but that shit is hella real, teaching the next generation the rights of passage to genocide. Also the dating scene for Black women in La is crazy, some of the baddest sistas I know don’t get approached by brothas in la…this is their commentary, you kinda have to have that reference to understand why a character like Molly would be so erratic in her decisions. Its hard out there for a Black woman Joe!

Great show... cant wait for next season fam....

So being dark skinned is a flaw to these bitches? I thought that was a plus these days?

But shout out to Jo, for sticking with her husband and helping him through it. Believe me, he appreciates it.

He felt like so much shit during that time and the last thing he needed was me nagging him or feeling just as sorry for him. He's in a better paying job now, and happier.

It also helped us both realize that we'd really have each other's back if we hit a bad point. Now, when I worry, he reminds me I'm not doing this alone and I actually believe him and he knows it's the other way around too.

So being dark skinned is a flaw to these bitches? I thought that was a plus these days?

Can't be dark-skinned and fat too...

Nah, but seriously... I'm not sure if that's Molly's hangup with him. I'm not quite sure what she's looking for but I don't think she knows either lol

Am I the only one who wants to slap the shit outta Tiffany with a greasy ass rack of ribs every time her bougee ass starts talking?

I think she's hilarious because I know women just like that lol.

I think her character will have a larger role next season. They've been setting up things like the pregnancy and Derek staying in a hotel for a while. Also, did anyone catch when Derek said Tiffany was going to watch "Due North" with Issa and the girls but she wasn't there?

I'm still trying to wrap my hands around molly's character arc. Last season she was Ms. Broken Pussy, can't get right with any guy. Fucked with a young guy at the girls retreat to show how she's a "bad bitch", and got clowned by Issa and crew.

Now, the she Big Simpin'? I just don't get it.

I did.
it ain't his baby.

Maybe Molly will finally accept the fact that she is a Lay Down.

She knows she's an ain't shit bitch. Everything she feels like she SHOULD do, she ain't doing it.

She's passing on dudes because they don't meet her standards, but she doesn't even meet her OWN standards.

All she really want is dick. That's why Issa said that dude must not have put it down, because if he had fucked the shit outta her, she wouldn't need to go back to Dro, who only gives her dick.

Molly just gone let the streets run thru that pussy, and then hope some simp ass nigga or a white man will come save her ass when she's ready to sit her ass down.

And I bet, if Dro leaves his girl for Molly, Molly ain't even gone want the nigga no more.
