I would say few cats on BGOL can challenge my appreciation and knowledge of hip-hop, maybe a few but not a whole lot.

This thread is a joke. No matter how much young dudes fight the term, Gucci Mane is nothing more than preschool rap. Ghost is extremely complex but not too much more than Chuck D used to be. It just shows that the standard for lyrics has gone in the trash. Its crazy hearing people get mad because they're called dumb or stupid but then they say some shit like "I don't like to think when I listen to rap" WTF???
 
In general when you compare anything in life in the USA divided by the Mason Dixon you will notice that it will only differ by slower pace. Unless you are in cities like Miami,DC or Atl. East Coast, excuse me ,Rap music in it's first form came out of NYC where everything is fast paced. People from the Northeast cities seem to be way more up to speed in life period so the lyrics and complexity of hip hop coming from the Northeast will continue to be progressive. Unlike the south where everything seems to be two steps behind life is simple and sheltered so most southerners are not going to be interested in translating hidden jewels interlaced into 4 bars.

Also the type of hip hop that one listens to usually is a reflection of what his or her life is about. So looking at North and South, Fast pace- Slow Pace, you will have rappers talking about selling crack on their grandmothers porch and walking laps around the shopping mall. While what is now called East Coast rappers will be giving you a tutorial on how to leave the crack game and rack up stamps on their passports.
