Gotham Producer Says Jerome Will Definitely Return

Fox’s DC property, Gotham, is making some big changes for its upcoming third season. Subtitled “Heroes Will Fall,” season three will introduce the Court of Owls, Mad Hatter, the Tweed Brothers, and the emergence of an older Poison Ivy — all while expanding the mystery surrounding the deaths of Thomas and Martha Wayne.

Dr. Hugo Strange shook things up in the second season as his experimentation at Indian Hill brought Fish Mooney back to life. While losing her at the end of the first season was quite a blow, her death isn’t the only one that left fans shocked. Killing off Jerome Valeska (Cameron Monaghan) before he ever took up the Joker mantle (it was assumed he’d eventually assume the role) felt like a big let down.

However, death in this fluid world of comic characters is never quite what it seems. AfterGotham killed off Jerome in the earlier half of season 2, the show spent the rest of its second season leaving a trail of breadcrumbs about the clown prince of crime. In an interview with Zap2it at the TCA’s (h/t CB), John Stephens, Gotham executive producer, speaks on the show’s plans to bring back the equal parts insane and charismatic character. He assures fans of Jerome’s eventual return, saying:

It is 100 percent our intention to bring Jerome back. We’re going to be playing it again this year and basically extending the idea of the cult of Jerome. We’re building the architecture for him to come back.”

ans of the series should temper their excitement because when Jerome makes his inevitable return, it very likely will not happen in Gotham‘s third season. Producers are banking that changes to the show in the third season will prompt enough fans to want more; though given Gotham’s struggles to maintain its audience for the second season, this is a risky move. Future network intentions aside, during the rest of the TCA panel, Stephens goes on to say:

“You’ll have these underground movements that have started to talk about Jerome and what he represented and how he’s going to come back like in the days of John the Baptist. Setting the stage that if there is a Season 4, hopefully we’ll bring that back in a much bigger way, and you’ll see these different versions of the Joker myth. [Jerome] plays into the idea of transformation. When he comes back, you want to see that new version, that next step forward.”

Without ever having explicitly said Jerome Valeska is the Joker, it will be far more effective to watch the legend unfold instead of relying on assumed knowledge of the character’s history. With hints that fans may have already met Harley Quinn, Gotham is working hard to add depth to its rogues gallery. But gambling the future on long-term world building is a risky move for a payoff two years from now.

Gotham season 3 premieres September 19, 2016, at 8ET on FOX.

The show runners don't seem to know what direction they want to go in. Someone should have been fired for making the decision to kill off Jerome so early, if at all.

Countless loose ends and terrifying mysteries still hang in the balance after the last season of Gotham, and major changes are on the horizon. The upcoming third season of FOX’s not-so-superhero drama will see the introduction of a 19-year-old Poison Ivy, the Mad Hatter, the mystery of the Court of Owls, and a few familiar faces returning – but among the new cast is a Marvel alumni who seems to be taking on a very, very different role.

Most superhero fans might know actor Kieran Mulcare best for his turn on Marvel’s Jessica Jones, when he played Ruben, the title character’s neighbor. Ruben’s puppy crush on Jessica earned him a horrible death at the hands of Kilgrave (or, well, himself technically). But now, it seems that Mulcare is headed to Gotham in a mysterious, ghoulish role, according to new set photos.

There wasn’t any major previous indication that Mulcare was set to join the cast, so the reveal is somewhat surprising. Unfortunately, it came with little else; there’s no real confirmation on who Mulcare will be playing, but given the deadly stare and particular appearance, a few guesses come to mind. Mulcare is the latest casting reveal, and he isn’t the only one familiar to the superhero beat. Co-star Jamie Chung, who played Go-Go Tamago in Big Hero 6, will be joining the cast as Valerie Vale — aunt to Batman-era journalist Vicki Vale.

Thanks to his dust-white appearance and haunting stare, fans have begun taking a guess at this role being a Proto-Solomon Grundy. Grundy is a recurring antagonist within the Batman mythos, and since the showrunners teased his appearance this season, it might not be too far off of a guess after all. The photos that accompany these released byComingSoon show a scene where Gordon and the GCPD are investigating the murder of a pair of newlyweds. What Mulcare’s character is doing there is a mystery. When discussing what this “proto” version of Solomon Grundy would be, producer John Stephens said that the version in Gotham isn’t just someone who dies and is reborn as Grundy, and that they’re a new character entirely.

In Jessica Jones, Ruben had his faults. He may have been a tad misguided thanks to his admittedly abusive sister, and maybe he was a little bit racist (his words) but Ruben meant well, and had a gentle heart. With a role that looks radically different compared to the socially troubled boy next door, it’s anyone’s guess as to what the showrunners have planned for Mulcare. Hopefully he’ll get to live longer this time around.

Gotham will return to FOX on September 19th at 8 pm EST.

That was schizo season debut. Everyone on the show is basically mentally unstable in some way (except maybe Alfred and Selina).

I hope they don't continue to run with the vigilante Gordon taking on Meta Humans single handedly theme.

OK

that was...interesting?

Manbat?
Gordon...Vigilante Bounty Hunter?
Is the Commissioner going to die?
a RESPONSIBLE Bullock?
Butch and Tabitha still got some love?
whiterose could coming back?

This show is trash. Why not just make a young Batman? They already going all out with villians.
this they used that dudes aging power on poison ivy.... they should have used it on Bruce to time jump

and they brought back everything i hated about the first season ...FISH

One thing I didn't get is who was the "Goth version" of Bruce Wayne supposed to be. He was talking to Ivy on the Roof?
