GOTHAM: New 'young' Batman - themed series on FOX

Maybe Fish will come back. She still can be alive.

My favorite part is when Don kept fucking with Fish and she shot him in the head.

Gotham postmortem: Jada Pinkett Smith on Fish Mooney's fate

Warning: This story contains major spoilers from the season finale of Gotham. Read at your own risk!

Fish Mooney finally made her triumphant return to town in the season finale—but her reign as Queen of Gotham was short-lived.

As the turf war between Falcone (John Doman) and Maroni (David Zayas) reached a boiling point, both Mooney and the Penguin (Robin Lord Taylor) made a bid to take over the city. Penguin attempts to put Falcone down for good, but with nothing to lose, Gordon (Ben McKenzie) comes to his rescue and gets him to a safe house—a location Fish is privy to as she shows up with her new army, which includes Selina (Camren Bicondova).

But being under Maroni’s thumb doesn’t sit well with Mooney, so she kills him, but eventually falls victim to the Penguin, who sends her to a watery grave after being shot by Butch (Drew Powell). Is Mooney really dead? EW caught up with Pinkett Smith to get the scoop:

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Is Fish Mooney really dead?
JADA PINKETT SMITH: That’s for the fans to determine. You saw the ending. She could be and she couldn’t be. Who knows? It was an interesting ending.

You did previously say that you are not going to be back for season 2. Is that still the case?
I will not be a series regular in season 2.

But is there a possibility you’ll pop up?
If she survives the fall. [Laughs] Yeah, I mean, it was water below.

Did you always have a sense of Mooney’s ultimate fate?
I signed for a year. I don’t think any of us really thought that Fish would have the life that she’s had or be one of the favorite characters on the show. She was there to service a purpose, as far as helping to tell Penguin’s story. I never knew exactly what it was going to be, but she’s not part of the original mythology. She was created for the television show specifically. I’m a smart girl. I understood I was there to service Penguin.

How do you feel about the way Fish went out?
She’s one of the characters that has been the most difficult to let go of. I still have my Fish Mooney nails and I think I’m going to keep them for a while. I love Fish. She’s one of my favorite characters. If she survives, I would definitely be willing to do whatever was necessarily to continue servicing the story of Gotham. I think I’m going to hold onto these nails for a minute.

Because Fish wasn’t part of the comics, did you have more freedom to carve out who this character is?
Definitely. I felt like I had an opportunity to be part of a franchise that I’ve been watching and reading about since I was a little girl. I was given the opportunity to help create a character that would be part of the Gotham myth, even if it’s only on television. I was like, “Wow, who gets that opportunity to do that?” I’m kind of a comic book geek myself, so that was an opportunity I couldn’t give up. I felt like I did have a lot more license than maybe some of the other characters, because those characters—like the Penguin or the Riddler or Catwoman—are in a very specific mythology in regards to the franchise of Batman. I felt like I was given a bit more creative license for sure.

Penguin is now calling himself the king of Gotham. How do you think Fish Mooney would feel about that?
First of all, she’s like, “No way! You can forget it!” If she heard that going down, you can best believe she’s going to do everything she can to survive or rise from the dead to make sure he never says those words again. She is pissed. She’s not happy about that at all. He probably feels that for the time being, but that’s not going to last. No.

What have you learned from playing this role?
One thing I can say about Fish is she’s given me the desire to be in front of the camera again. There weren’t a lot of roles that inspired me. That’s changing now, especially on television. Movies, we’re working at it. She was the first character that came along that I was like, “Oh man.” Once I got involved, she just inspired me. I was like, “I gotta start doing this more again.” That’s what’s been different, is that she’s been kind of a muse for me as far as me figuring out the direction that I want to take creatively, because I really was kind of lost for a while. “Will I be in front of the camera again? Am I just going to stay behind the camera and produce and create projects for other talent?” But now, after having this experience, I’m really excited, hopeful and inspired again. I really enjoyed being in front of the camera and having the opportunity to play Fish.

In looking back on the season, is there anything you wish you would’ve done differently with Fish?
I don’t think there’s anything I would’ve done differently, per se, but TV is so fast. One of the things that I’ve learned is the complexity in which I dealt with some of Fish—because I understood her background and a lot of people didn’t—is the Fish Mooney persona is exactly that. This was a damaged woman that came from—I won’t even say humble beginnings—I’ll say traumatic beginnings. She created this Fish Mooney persona as a mask to cover what she really believes she is. Going in and out of that mask, going from this persona of watching old Hollywood stars that would be her idea of what an elegant, intelligent, upper echelon woman behaved like. When she would go back to the gutter chick that she really is, she would go back and forth in these different personalities because that was really a weapon for her. Fish can camouflage. That was one of her strengths. She can pretty much adapt in any environment that she’s in. If I had just been able to communicate that aspect of Fish Mooney a little bit more precisely and forgetting sometimes that the audience doesn’t know her history. I wish there could’ve been more information about her background because then people might’ve even enjoyed her more. That’s really the only thing, and that’s just my own technical thinking, putting my producer hat on.

With that said, do you feel like there’s more to be told with Mooney’s story?
Oh, definitely. I absolutely do. It’s just a matter of whether it services the story of Gotham or not. At the end of the day, I knew clearly that she was there to service the Penguin character. I was fine with that and happy to take that on and I had a great time doing it.

When you revealed you wouldn’t be back for a second season, did you realize it would get so much pickup and tip what’s coming in the season finale?
You know what? I didn’t. Sometimes I can be a little too honest and when I get asked a question, I just answer it. I had already told everyone that I had always signed a year. When I first got the role, I posted that on my Facebook. I said, “Look, I’m going to TV for a season in a show called Gotham,” just basically telling my fans that I hope you’ll ride the season with me. In my mind, it didn’t seem like a big deal. I was there for a season. I didn’t think it was such a secret. Once I realized, I was like, “Wow, there it is. I’m not coming back. Can’t back peddle.” It was a moment of me not really thinking about it, being asked a question, and thinking that everybody know that, but it’s cool. I think it worked out.

What’s next for you?
We’ve got Magic Mike XXL coming out, which I’m really excited about. There are a couple of different projects that have come my way. I haven’t really made any commitments yet. One of the difficulties of being able to play a character like Fish Mooney, everything else now seems so blah. I’m just waiting for that next piece that inspires me. There are definitely a few things in the wings that we’re talking about and negotiating. Once those get locked in, you’ll hear about it.

‘Gotham’ Finale: EP Bruno Heller Sets Up Season 2’s Big Joke & Gets Fishy

What began with water also ended in the water on Gotham tonight. The city has a new boss of a sort in the Season 1 finale and a lot of laughter is coming in Season 2, says executive producer Bruno Heller.

Bookending Oswald Cobblepot AKA Penguin rising from the murky waters of the bay at the Gotham Season Finale Spoilersend of the Batman backstory’s highly rated September 22 pilot, Jada Pinkett Smith’s villainous queen bee Fish Mooney was thrown to her apparent death in the city waters in tonight’s Gotham season finale All Happy Families Are Alike. To top that off, Robin Taylor Lord’s Penguin yells to the skyline that he’s now the king of the criminals. Not only did the packed finale drop Fish in the sea, but mob chief Carmine Falcone is retiring from ruling Gotham, fellow gangster Sal Maroni is now dead and the Ben McKenzie portrayed GCPD Detective James Gordon has been given power he doesn’t really desire.

While Smith announced earlier that she’s not returning to Gotham for Season 2, series creator and EP Heller explains that Fish’s murder was vital to the end of Season 1.”She’s such a domineering, powerful, imperious person that Penguin can’t possibly be the crime lord in Gotham while Fish is around, especially if she has anything to say about it,” he says. However, as Heller hints, this may not be the last we’ve seen of Fish Mooney. “This is Gotham, and death isn’t a barrier to return (for its characters),” the EP teases. “I’m not saying that she’ll definitely return.”

The end of the Falcone-Maroni rivalry tonight in sum marked the end of an era for the Caped Awardsline/Deadline Hollywood Screening Of Fox's "Gotham"Crusader show, which was renewed for second season on January 17. “Mobsters were the first stage of Gotham‘s criminal history. They gradually die out and have their places taken by the more spectacular villains,” explains Heller about setting the stage for Season 2. However, when it comes to ruling the city’s underworld, “that’s a very specific job description” says Heller that isn’t cut out for every colorful lunatic in the Batman dramatis personae. The creator/EP indicates that Edward Nygma AKA The Riddler “will be a larger, more villainous character in Season 2″ but as far as running a gang or having sway over political power, that’s not his alter-ego’s approach. “Sometimes it’s about a villain just satisfying their own perverted lusts and urges,” adds Heller. As far as how long Penguin can rule Gotham, “that’s the big question” says Heller.

“That said, there will be a very big villain arriving in Season 2, one who doesn’t want to run Gotham Feb 16 2015Gotham, but destroy it,” teases Heller. That villain almost seems certain to be The Joker, who the creator/EP mentioned at Deadline’s Awardsline screening of the Gotham finale on April 29. “We’re going to answer a lot of questions about The Joker that were raised this season,” says Heller referring to The Blind Fortune Teller episode which introduced the cackling character of Jerome, who confesses to Gordon that he killed his mother. The Joker according to Batman comic lore can’t fully come into play as himself until his cowled rival is himself in costume, and we are far away from that happening on Gotham, this storyline is more of an origins one. “There’s so much revealed in the first three episodes,” says Heller, “Jerome contains the DNA of The Joker, but if he isn’t him than how does someone else appear to be the Joker? How does The Joker’s identity transfer into somebody else’s body?”

As villains come into their own in Season 2, tonight’s episode also opened the door on a passageway down to a dark, damp cellar; one which young Bruce Wayne is certain to enter, accessed via a bookcase in his family mansion’s library. It’s arguably the Bat Cave. “In the writers’ room we’re calling it his Dad’s office,” specifies Heller. In terms of how this discovery will impact young Wayne next season, Heller continues, “he’ll learn that his parents are more complicated than he imagined. When you’re a young kid, parents tend to be either heroes or villains; mostly heroes. It’s hard to imagine just before Bruce’s age when your parents can do no wrong. You can’t imagine them having secret lives. Bruce will learn that his father was a complex, tortured person, but also heroic. His father was leading a double life and this leads to the creation of an alter ego. It’s hard for anyone to present the fullness of themselves to the general public. If you have dark secrets to keep, you have to create an alter ego. That is the essence of what the Batcave means.”

Awardsline/Deadline Hollywood Screening Of Fox's "Gotham"At the Gotham Awardsline screening last week, Heller and his EPs John Stephens and Danny Cannon, who directed tonight’s episode, told Deadline that they began working on Season 2’s story line exactly a week ago. Production starts on June 22 at the Brooklyn Navy Yards, the same production locale for HBO’s Boardwalk Empire.

In extending the Batman prequel universe in Gotham, Heller consults DC Comics chief creative officer Geoff Johns when hammering out plot. And given the melange of evil doers who’ve been introduced thus far, there are some that will never see the light of day, read Australian baddie Captain Boomerang, who has a specialty for throwing and making, well, boomerangs. “Some characters work well in comic strips, but then you can’t imagine someone wearing that costume and going to work in it,” says Heller. Despite what the Gotham EP says, the Captain Boomerang character is still coming to a screen near you. Played by Jai Courtney, Captain Boomerang is one of the gang of supervillians in the David Ayer directed Suicide Squad. Set to come out on August 5, 2016, the Warner Bros flick also stars Jared Leto as The Joker and Will Smith as Deadshot among other baddies.

Nonetheless, Heller has his own favorite tacky evil doer: King Tut. The character is a former Yale professor who, after hitting his head, thinks he’s the Egyptian ruler and aims to takeover Gotham – which he calls “Thebes.’ Confesses Heller, “I’m fascinated by him. You know everyone has a soft spot for a character who shouldn’t be on the screen. What’s his power?”

Watch for the Bat signal and you might find out.

Gotham Is Signing On 2 Key Villains In Season 2

gotham_72126.jpg

On Gotham, Bruce Wayne is still years away from becoming Batman, but the titular city’s criminals aren’t waiting for the caped vigilante to rise to begin their crime careers. From main characters like Oswald Cobblepot (Penguin) and Edward Nygma (Riddler) to more minor players like Jack Buchinsky (The Electrocutioner) and Victor Zsasz, viewers saw many of Batman’s future adversaries either already as villains or just getting started. With the show returning for Season 2, more names will be joining the lineup later this year, and two of these newcomers won’t be lacking for good looks.

According to TV Line, one of the villainous faces that will be appearing next season on Gotham is an “intelligent, cultured and highly articulate” man who is extremely handsome, but hides how dangerous he is with seductive charm.

The other evildoer will be a female in her mid-to-late 20s who is described as a “sexy knock-out.” No other details were provided, but assuming these aren’t just original characters like Fish Mooney, we can likely expect them to be faces from Batman’s long list of criminals he’s faced over the decades.

It’s worth noting that several male villains have already been announced for Season 2, like Mr. Freeze, Clayface and the Mad Hatter. So for the male villain, it could be one of those gentlemen (using the term loosely).

If I had to pick from those three, Mad Hatter matches this description the most. His high intellect, stalker-behavior and obsession with mind control ranks him as one of Batman’s creepier adversaries. The only problem is that Jervis Tetch is typically depicted as not being handsome, but it wouldn’t to exchange his mouse-like features for a face more alluring to the ladies, similar to Season 1’s Ogre. Other options outside this trio could include demented psychiatrist Hugo Strange, or perhaps a new mob villain like Tony Zucco, the man who will possibly later be behind the death of Dick Grayson’s parents, should the show go that far.

As for the woman, Gotham has already introduced Batman’s most notable female adversaries Catwoman and Poison Ivy, and they’re still children. The only major female villain remaining is Harley Quinn, but because Jerome, the person we’re currently being led to believe is The Joker , is only a teenager, it’s extremely doubtful that this woman is her since Joker had been causing chaos for years before he corrupted Dr. Harleen Quinzel.

That leaves C-listers and below like Peyton Riley (the female Ventriloquist), Magpie, Sofia Falcone (Carmine Falcone’s daughter) and a few others. None of these are household names, but that doesn’t make them any less dangerous.

On the other hand, if Gotham takes a page from Arrow’s book and includes a villain who isn’t part of Batman rogues gallery, then the list of names grows significantly bigger

Michael Chiklis Cops Big Gotham Role, Joins Season 2 as Series Regular

The GCPD has a new savior, and his name is… Vic Mackey?!

Gotham is returning Michael Chiklis to his Shield roots, casting the Emmy winner in the series-regular role of Captain Nathaniel Barnes, TVLine has learned exclusively.

Who’s Barnes, exactly? Per Gotham‘s producers, he “lands on the GCPD like a tornado, ripping out the dead wood of Gotham’s police force. He is a law and order zealot; unafraid of making enemies – on either side of the law. For Gordon (Ben McKenzie), Barnes is a hero and a mentor, someone with whom he can share the burden of heroism. Captain Barnes proves himself to be a strong ally to Gordon… but one day he will make an equally powerful enemy.”

Gordon could certainly use an ally right about now. At Comic-Con earlier this month, exec producer Bruno Heller billed Season 2 as “the rise of the villains,” a development that will cause the titular city to “decline into chaos.” Added McKenzie: “As the villains rise, there’s an arms race, and the good guys have to increase their force as well. There’ll be new heroes introduced.”

Chiklis most recently starred in American Horror Story: Freak Show.

Gotham kicks off its second season on Monday, Sept. 25 at 8/7c on Fox.

New 'Gotham' Season 2 Teasers Show Off Joker, Tigress, Batcave

According to the two just-released Gotham teaser clips, it looks like the Fox drama is taking the old adage “Your hero is only as good as their villain” seriously. Most of the more colorful, non-Mafia baddies have only stuck around for an episode, or are only briefly glimpsed. This season’s tagline, “Rise of the Villains,” suggests Jim Gordon’s dealings with these people will be much more involved.

The first teaser (above), “Hungry” — with a slowed-down version of Duran Duran’s “Hungry Like the Wolf,” naturally — shows off bad guys old and new.

The corrupt Commissioner Loeb (Peter Scolari) may not be a problem much longer. In the comics, Loeb’s mob ties are exposed, forcing him to resign, but when Gordon says, “I told you I’d break you. I will,” it kind of sounds like he might decide to employ a more… persuasive measure (of the leg/face-breaking variety).

One of the reasons we’re thinking Gordon’s methods will get more extreme is that it looks like he’s getting very cozy with the Penguin next season. He already knows that Cobblepot’s help comes at a price; what would drive Gordon to continue seeking that help?

2668c4ca753431a0c9b52be4bdbbe808103b47ee.png

It might be because the main villains early in the season are billionaires Theo Galavan (James Frain, Orphan Black) and his sister Tabitha (Jessica Lucas, Gracepoint) — otherwise known as Tigress

5ef9af3bcf306284110e4433364194bbaa7cfc44.jpg

There are multiple versions of Tigress — the first appeared in the same Action Comics #1 that introduced Superman — but Tabitha Galavan is a completely new take on the supervillain. Presumably her DNA won’t be spliced with a tiger’s, like some of her animated variations, but maybe Gotham is ready to step up its craziness?

Deadline says that the duo’s plan “will lead to the creation of new villains … and the destruction of others.” Maybe there will be DNA splicing? More likely, we’ll see a return of Venom, the prototype drug created by WellZyn in Season 1 and best known in the comics as the substance that created Bane.

The Riddler, having finally come into his own, will play an even bigger role in Season 2

6da7d8f9ba45db095bc9da7a14e280cc3da59b2c.jpg

Victor Zsasz (Anthony Carrigan) and Copperhead (Lesley-Ann Brandt) are both interesting characters who have made the most of their limited screen time.

Will we get more of their backstories?

71f1958d30ceceb822962cdf7bcc6d1589778c78.jpg

And then there’s the face that everyone’s been waiting for. Showrunner Bruno Heller is still cagey about confirming that Cameron Monaghan’s Jerome is actually the Joker, but he did tell ComicBook.com, “The beginning of Season 2 is the very earliest origins of how the Joker came to be.” That probably means his story is tied in with the Galavans.

In this second teaser, “The Cave,” we get a taste of what lies beneath Thomas Wayne’s study. There’s a glimpse of the door…

… a keypad, Bruce saying, “You can’t have the truth unless you feel a true calling,” — which feels like another clue left by his father — and the screeching of bats.

We still have yet to see Amygdala and Silver St. Cloud, two comic book villains who have already been announced for Season 2. The Goldbergs star Natalie Alyn Lind will play Silver, described as “an ethereal beauty with the pristine manners of a Gotham debutante.” Niece to the Galavans, she’ll befriend Bruce — and become his new love interest. The role of Amygdala hasn’t been cast yet.

Gotham: First Look at Michael Chiklis

Exclusive: Chiklis picks up a badge again, this time in Gotham City

gotham_sc30_271_612x380.jpg

Michael Chiklis is back in a precinct. Here’s the actor on the set of Fox’s Gotham, where he’s once again playing the type of character he won an Emmy portraying in FX’s The Shield: The super-tough cop — only this officer is pretty different, morality-wise, than Vic Mackey.

Chiklis plays Captain Nathaniel Barnes, a “law and order zealot who lands on the GCPD like a tornado, ripping out the dead wood of Gotham’s police force.” Chiklis is a series regular and introduced in the fourth episode of Gotham season 2, titled “Strike Force” (a nod to Mackey’s lawless cop team on The Shield).

See above for your first look at Chiklis in season 2 as he squares off with James Gordon (Ben McKenzie).

Ben McKenzie talks where Gotham went wrong, and how season 2 is exactly what fans want

ben-mckenzie_612x380.jpg

So far, what we know of Gotham’s second season is this: It’s going to introduce a lot of new villains, and more importantly, it’s going to do away with the procedural element of the show, making the story arcs much more serialized. And hopefully, that can bring back some of the viewers that left the show in the latter half of season 1.

When talking about season 2, star Ben McKenzie made it clear that while he’s still very proud of the show they made last year, he thinks season 2 will be a bit closer to what fans want.

“I think we made a mistake relatively early on in trying to introduce a villain and take care of that villain in one episode: catch them, send them to Arkham, do whatever,” McKenzie said. “That was just a mistake. We should’ve never done it.”
It also didn’t help the show’s case that fans had to endure a number of mini-hiatuses after Fox added 6 more episodes to the show’s first season in October of last year.

“We were ordered for 16 [episodes]. We were going to have one break and come back and finish the rest of them in terms of the airing, and then we added six more, so we had to break again and then we had to come back again,” McKenzie said. “And it’s hard for the audience to follow that many changes in a series in terms of when it’s airing and when it’s not.”

More than anything, McKenzie realizes that audience members are always one click away from another great show. “It’s challenging right now,” he said. “There’s so much competition out there.”

Yet, with season 2 already underway, McKenzie feels really good about the direction the show is going. As he put it, “The audience really wants to understand who these people are and live with them, sit with them and enjoy them. Whether they’re evil or good, they are entertaining. So that’s what we’re doing in season 2. [It’s] really kick ass. I think it’s exactly what the fans want to see.”

Find out when Gotham premieres on Monday, Sept. 21 at 8 p.m. ET on Fox.

'Gotham' Co-Stars Morena Baccarin and Benjamin McKenzie Go Public With Their Romance at Emmy Afterparty

Well, Batman, it looks like we've got a love connection.
Gotham co-stars Morena Baccarin, 36, and Benjamin McKenzie, 37, arrived arm in arm at the Fox Emmy Awards afterparty on Sunday night. She looked ready for a date night in a low-cut red Reem Acra gown that was see-through in the bodice. He was smokin' in a Salvatore Ferragamo tux.

People magazine and E! News are among the news outlets to have confirmed with sources that there is romance brewing for the pair, but really you need to look no further than this photo. Yep, they're totally hot for each other.

https://s.yimg.com/bt/api/res/1.2/6...d87276_Benjamin-McKenzie-Morena-Baccarin1.jpg

Fans of their Fox series have witnessed their chemistry since nearly a year ago. Baccarin, who played Brody's long-suffering wife, Jessica, on Homeland, joined the cast of the Gotham last October. She's Leslie Thompkins to his James Gordon, and they dig each other on the show too. Just look:

https://s.yimg.com/bt/api/res/1.2/K...a69c10-6099-11e5-b9e1-1dfd24f09c23_Gotham.jpg

Baccarin and McKenzie actually go back further than that. When he was charming us on The O.C., she made a guest appearance on the show. It wasn't memorable though — well, for him anyway. McKenzie claimed not to remember.

In the past, McKenzie has been tight-lipped about his romances (his motto? "Less said about the bedroom, the better"), but this one comes at a good time for Baccarin. The Brazilian-born actress has been going through a bitter divorce with writer/director Austin Chick. Last month, TMZ reported that Chick, whom Baccarin was married to for three years, was making a bid for physical custody of their nearly 2-year-old child and was seeking spousal support from her $1.5 million a year earnings.

But a nasty custody battle seemed to be the furthest thing from her mind last night with McKenzie — and that's a good thing. She could use a little fun and she appears to be having it.

I was hesitant but I think this is the only way to go...

VILLIANS...big bad over the top.

Interesting how Fish was criticized for being TOTO MUCH and essentially that is EXACTLY the direction they are going in.

there was no real surprised who dies.

But they are embracing their comic book roots

with the colors sets and acting.

Barbara is getting on my nerves though...sadly the horrible way hey initially introduced her is baggage they can't easily get rid of.

Like how almost ANY of the females could POTENTIALLY be Harley Quin

And that kid playing the Joker?

damn...he gonna make it his Syler.

lucky bastid...

To new for me to say that yet. I Loved Fish. Penguin grew on me as well as a great character. This season Ian's Joker is undeniably great, but it seems the pacing is a lot faster this season. The have like 20 episodes, it seems like its just moving too fast with no real depth like the first season had.

Only two episodes and The crazies have escaped, Jim got his job back and became commissioner. Bruce has Fox working for him in the cave and Bullock has returned.

It would be impossible to keep this level up for 18 more episodes. If they can I will eat crow and totally agree this season killed it.

Just look:

Gordon seeded up Leslie in real life too

That is completely fair.
And I thought Fish should have been made to be the mother of all the super villains.
And in a sense she is...every damn villain is acting in that over the top style she was getting killed for.
And it works.
They BETTER bring her back.
They had to hit the ground running
This is a full reboot
they found their tone and I think they will slow it down now.
Cause I disagree that last season was about depth...many times nothing was done. And some things were done badly.
It's leaner and seems headed somewhere.

So far....it's early.

I feel Harley will probably be one of the kids like Poison Ivy is at this point. Her ass gotta get through high school and medical school first.
