GOP Rep Steve King Defends K Street: 'Somebody Needs To Stand Up For The Lobby'

Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) took to the House floor on Friday afternoon to come to the defense of that beleaguered band of First-Amendment exercisers operating from their K Street redoubt.

"Yes, lobbyists do a very effective and useful job on this hill," King promised. "Somebody needs to stand up for the lobby. It is a matter of providing a lot of valuable information."

King qualified that if a lobbyist lied to him, he'd end the relationship. "If anyone gave me information that wasn't accurate or honest, if they found out about it, they would bring it back and correct it to me first. If I thought they were doing so intentionally, they would not come back to talk to me ever. There is a credibility there in that arena," he said.

Aren't they crazy always claiming to be about "shrinking government" but every single time they're in power, government grows? Every single time.

Though while government grows, regulatory agencies shrink and are rendered ineffective.

I agree, they have "sold out" every proponent of limited govt for the last 30 yrs

Thats why they are labeled Neocons (these are the people that say Deficits don't matter)

I look at it a little different. I would argue, from personal experience, there is too much regulation. The "Too Big To Fail's" lobby for extreme regulations (in terms of cost) to keep the little guy from competing in the marketplace of ideas.

Through Republican and pro-big business Democratic leadership, major corporations have stacked the deck so that the agencies that would really have oversight over them are watered down to the point of ineffectiveness but they make sure to get rules in place that squash down smaller competitors.

I would say "naked capitalism". Capitalism isn't an inherently good or bad system, anymore than communism, as long as it has proper checks to protect consumers, shareholders, and employees as well as protecting small competitors from larger ones.
