The browser extension hasn't been connecting to Chromecast for me (still beta). I believe Google said Chrome version 30 contains all the enhancements for this (stable release is 28 right now).

Overall impression of the device after your testing?

Netflix, Youtube, Google Music... they all work flawlessly. Everything starts up on the TV immediately after you press Play and controlling the playback/volume from my Nexus 4 is on point. Video is in HD, but most of the album art from Google Music fills the screen in low-res (if you care about that).

I haven't had any luck connecting to the device using the Chrome extension yet on my personal Windows 7 laptop. Not sure what's going on because my work laptop doesn't have the same issue.

Overall it works very well but it's very limited right now without the browser extension working for me. With the extension, you have alot of possibilities:

- streaming from Xvideos and the like :)
- stream from Spotify (without paying the monthly fee )
- use the Chrome Remote Desktop functionality
- stream local files using the trick vidswaps posted

Send local media (music, videos, etc on your hard drive) to Chromecast

While Chromecast is designed to let you stream content from the internet to your TV, as mentioned above it can actually send anything from a browser tab to your TV.

So here’s a neat trick: Open up the Chrome web browser on your computer and type c:/ into the address bar. You should see a list of files and directories on your computer’s C drive.

Navigate to a video file and you can play it through your Chrome browser — and if you can do that, you can also send it to your TV.

Or dragging and dropping in a web browser works too.

I had an issue connecting to Chrome tabs on my Macbook but no issue on my Windows laptop. What I did to get the macbook tabs to cast is go into Chrome settings and scoll alll the way to the bottom and turn off hardware acceleration. I'm sure it'll work as it should when it's out of Beta.

Interesting.. the Chrome extension has an experimental option to cast your entire desktop, not just tabs

They shut that Netflix shit down early  luckily I ordered before the shut off time. For the brothers who got theirs from amazon, the cut off time was July 24th 5:31 pm PST

My BGOL timestamp shows I ordered around July 24th between 455pm and 501pm EST

Fucking ass fuckers beta give me my Netflix shit...:hmm::D

I've tested a .mp4 video file that did play in the browser, but I cannot get .avi files to play in Chrome.

So if I'm a DJ and I buy 3 of these. Does that mean I can spin videos at a Sports Bar and Nightclubs using their existing TVs? That would be great.

Yep, assuming they have a decent Wifi network.

I'm actually thinking about mounting my small TV in my weight room and connecting another Chromecast to that. Didn't wanna run wires inside the wall

It's pretty barebones. Expect maybe someone to implement mkv support, and maybe vobsub but not much else.

And since someone wanted it, what it can play.

Video codecs: H.264 High Profile Level 4.1, 4.2 and 5, VP8

Audio decoding: HE-AAC, LC-AAC, CELT/OPUS, MP3

Containers: MP4/CENC, WebM, MPEG-DASH, SmoothStreaming

Level 1 DRM support: Widevine, Playready

Subtitles: WebVTT - Web Video Text Tracks

That's a beautiful thing. Was not expecting that out tha gate.

Can someone check the other sites I linked to?

Specially movie4k...

The links for 1800upload and billionuploads are mkv's. That may have something to do with them not playing.

Can you stream from your desktop to tv with the Chromecast with the desktop wired to your router?

If I'm looking at a youtube video on the desktop computer it would be great to be able to throw it on the tv.

Yes. I did this with my desktop. It will also load the best quality your tv can display as well when you do this.

for all the folks who never get the NFL or NBA package..... you can get the broadband only package and use this chromecast to stream to the TV! had a homie do it with his MLB package and it worked great.

Also, for our PPV events, firstrow and other sites worked well.... enjoy guys

Went outside to paint my mailbox, and alas...
