here's my .02. Since I am a muscian myself I feel close to this subject. and since I am old enough to actually remember seeing Hendrix, I will weigh in. if you want an education in rock you only need to know one name: HENDRIX. this black guitar player started the real rock movement and completly took it over. everything being done since is just trying to catch up to what he did in the sixties! If you want to hear pure rock , listen to anything he did with the Experience. If you want to hear the greatest recording of Black Rock listen to the recording of Band of Gypsies live! When he played, usually only accompanied by only bass and drums, he sounded like three or four guitars. he did things that most modern groups cannot acomplish today even with all the advanced electronics!
For a quick education, reant or buy the documentary: Jimi Hendrix. As an example, he was such a monster on the guitar, that Eric Clapton and Pete Townshend of The Who weren't even friends before Jimi went to England. But after they saw him perform the became instant close friends because they were both threatened by Hendrix. Mind you these two were no slouches on the guitar themselves, Hendrix was just that good and more importantly, INNOVATIVE ! he changed what the guitar did forever. after Hendrix died, Clapton and Townshend went back to not speaking to each other.
Which brings us to today. Many rock artists will readily acknowledge theit debt to Hendrix. All of this now white rock was initiated by hendrix. Prince does not front...he embraces the influence. Look at performances by both of them down to the facial expressions and it becomes obvious that prince studied every performance of Hendrix that he could get his hands on. And kudos to the few black muscians doing the rock that was dominated by a black guitar player in the sixties.
In essence I am saying, yes there are many great rock bands today, but if you want to see what they are saying , just listen to Jimi Hendrix, and you will understand everything that has come since. I stand by my original statement, they are all trying to catch up to what hendrix did back in the sixties!
that's all I got to say about that!
