Golden Boy Quits on Mayweather; Dismisses Superfight vs. Manny Pacquiao

Either that or his lack of intelligence, Oscar never struck me as the brightest bulb in the box.

You know, Oscar has lost some of the biggest fights that he has been in, and in a few of them, he has had a good start (Floyd, Trinidad, Hopkins) and then he just goes dunce for the rest of the fight...

Upgrade Dave said:
Tougher? Maybe. But Cotto hasn't shown anything to suggest he would have been a tough fight for Mayweather at that time.

Exactly. That's why Arum would not match him up with Floyd in 2006 and still would not do so through 2008 (the most likely period that they would have fought) because it would not be a good matchup. Floyd would have tagged him all day.

Remember folks Bob Arum isn't no spring chicken...What he has done over the past five years is good business for his sake...He basically "protected" his fighters so that he could get as much money as he could without losing the marketability of his top money making fighters at the time (Cotto, Marg, and Pac). Add Clottey in there (with a sprinkle of Shane) and you have a money train that has not stopped yet

I agree he should have made the fight at 147 then....but JMM was already bloated up at 144 he would have been even slower IMO....

next when it comes to Boxing cats always looking for an advantage....with all these weight classes how many bigger fighters are cutting crazy weight to dominate smaller weight classes....?

I hate that shit. That's why I was always pleased to see Ortiz look so bad at jr welter. The nigga was over 160 all the time but was fighting at 140 and looking terrible when matched with any decent comp.

Ever since Floyd was 130lbs

People have been hopin this dude loses

People dont think its fair for him to be undefeated.

This isn't true. Mayweather was well liked back then. The hate didn't really start until he started the "Money" Mayweather thing counting money on the screen and then then it just went through the roof with the whole Pacquiao PED ordeal.

This is true but it's ironic that these guys actually hurt themselves more when they do this. Look at Miguel Cotto. Cotto was getting dropped left and right and almost got rocked silly by everybody's favorite, Demarcus Corley. Corley, by the way, proved to be one of the worst finishers in boxing history in that fight. Anyway, as Cotto has moved up in weight he has seemed more sturdy on his feet. Ah, actually I was reading an article where Freddie Roach says he told Ortiz a long time ago to move up to 147. He said that Ortiz sparred in his gym many times and that when Ortiz neared 140 when training, he would actually start getting dropped in sparring by mediocre guys in the gym. So, I guess if the guy is naturally larger and trying to get some kind of size advantage by coming in low, he could actually be doing more harm to himself than good.

True. I don't think the PED/Pacquiao thing affected his popularity at all. People had already made up their minds on Mayweather by then.
Under Arum, he was just a highly skilled boxer but once he became his own promoter and star fighter, he became the boxing version of a "heel" wrestler and it's worked.
