An 11-year-old girl who was walking to school in Prince William County Tuesday was abducted and sexually assaulted and a suspect was arrested later, the county police said.

The girl was walking in the area of Essex and Radford Drives in the Woodbridge section of the county, when a man approached, the police said. They said he grabbed her and implied that he had a weapon.

While this was happening, the police said, a 34-year-old woman was in front of her house and saw the girl with the man. The man struck the woman repeatedly, causing significant injury, the police said. The assailant then forced the woman and the girl into the house, they said.

Someone else in the house heard what was going on, police said, and tried to intervene. The man fled, taking the girl with him to a spot on Cumberland Drive, where he sexually assaulted her, according to the police.

After the assault, the police said, the man released the girl and fled.

Meanwhile the witness had called authorities. The girl found an officer and reported the attack. Both the girl and the witness were taken to a hospital for treatment, police said.

Police said investigators found evidence at the scene that gave information about a possible suspect.

Officers in the area on an unrelated investigation arrested Adam-Seth Nathaneal Walter, 36, in the incident, police said. They said he had no fixed address.

Police said he was charged with rape and abduction with intent to defile in connection with the attack on the girl. In the attack on the witness, police said, he was charged with abduction, robbery, burglary, malicious wounding, use of a firearm in commission of a violent felony and possession of a firearm by a convicted violent felon.

on the same day I find out a neighbor who is recently separated has to let her 9 year old son take a TRAIN to school.

I could NOT do it with my kids no matter what...

especially in cities like NY and NJ

but based on this incident it don't really matter WHERE...

I damn sure remember my elementary school days. We were way to young to be walking to and from school. But that's how shit was. Honestly, we were taking chances everyday. Cutting through woods and of the different back ways. Some days your group of friends that you walked with would be split up and you were by yourself. I know many of us have stories our parents will never know.

Hell. Shit is never sweet for anyone who has a good distance to walk no matter what the age.

My daughter walked home almost every day last year. I had zero worries.
