Lots of inventions and ideas are generated by people outside of a field. Sometimes the people in the field are trapped in the prevailing paradigm to see another way of doing things. Sometimes there is a small bump that needs crossing and just need someone else to inspire the aha thought.

How does the pay work? From what I can gather, you are placed on a team, but, what if a person isn't carrying their load? I mean, everybody on the team gets paid for just being on the team whose solution is chosen?
