Georgetown considers Patrick Ewing for head-coaching position, Update: HE GOT IT!

Ewing. If he gives a fuck, is the ONLY person that could possibly return this school to prominence. Please hire him Georgetown!

Plus I'm moving to the dmv soon so I can break out the starter gear from my youth. Hopefully I can still get into a large.

I distinguished between public speaking and other forms of communication and you responded with a list of other forms of communication. In your haste to attack a tree, you missed the forest.

What grounds do you have to claim that Ewing can barely speak? Have you had a conversation with him, do you know people who have worked with him? If not, your baseless repetition of an attack that has been made on that man since he was a student at Georgetown is grounds for you to do the shutting up. I don't think hearing Ewing speak in interviews, post-game or otherwise, is even near a basis for repeating this unsubstantiated attack on his intelligence. Everything I have ever heard suggests you are wrong and the idea that negative perceptions of his public speaking can keep him out of a job after a decade and a half, particularly in the NBA, where a coach's public speaking ability ultimately means jackshit, is contemptible garbage.

You didnt distinguish shit... you only displayed your ignorance on subject matter you spoke loudly and wrongly on... Something you continue to do far too regularly... I had more patience with the shit when you were a teen or early 20 something.. Now not so much. Go away bro.

You should be better about admitting when you're wrong.

This is so idiotic. His ability to hold a fucking press conference doesn't matter (and would matter even less in the NBA, where he should havebeen given an opportunity a long time ago). He can communicate with his players as well as anybody and is an NBA legend who would have a huge edge in recruiting the Anthony Davises and DeMarcus Cousinses of the world.

The difference between me and you besides, age, experience, wealth, success, awareness,... is that i dont speak on matters i have little insight, education and knowledge on.. You on the other hand continue to speak arrogantly and ignorantly about shit you dont have a fucking clue. You're a fucking imbecile.. .. and a stubborn one at that.

Sources: Patrick Ewing accepts multiyear deal to become Georgetown's head coach

Hall of Fame center Patrick Ewing has accepted a multiyear contract to return to Georgetown University as its head coach, sources told The Vertical.

“It’s a big loss for us, but obviously we are all thrilled for Patrick to have this opportunity,” Hornets coach Steve Clifford told The Vertical on Monday afternoon.

“I think that he’s attacked the coaching profession in the same work manner that made him so successful as a player. He’s a nuts and bolts coach, detailed oriented and constantly looking for ways to make himself better. He’s going be a big loss here.”

Ewing has dutifully studied the vastly different job requirements of running a college program, talking with, among others, college coaches who made the jump from professional basketball backgrounds, sources told The Vertical. He gathered information on potential assistant coaches, working to find a staff that’ll balance his inexperience in recruiting.

Those who have talked with Ewing in the past week believe that he’s fully understanding of the consuming nature of big-time college recruiting and prepared to immerse himself in it.

“Patrick has such great reverence for Coach [John] Thompson and all he did for him – as well as all the other coaches he played for and worked under,” Jeff Van Gundy told The Vertical. “But people would be underestimating Patrick if they felt he was going to try to completely emulate anyone else as a head coach. He’s going to be his own man.”

Ewing played for Van Gundy with the Knicks and served five seasons as an assistant coach under him with the Houston Rockets.

“Very few who have been a top-50 player of all time has ever invested more into a second career than Patrick has into coaching,” Van Gundy told The Vertical. “Because of that work ethic and his understanding of the craft, he’s not going into it alone. He’s going to work together with his staff and players and the coaches of players of prospective players. He’s going to be very inclusive. It’s going to serve him well.

“His personality has been misunderstood for so long that I can’t get wait for him to show the masses his humor and intelligence and his core values when it comes to leadership.”

Ewing has been an NBA assistant coach for 15 seasons and has increasingly become a viable NBA head-coaching candidate. Ewing has regularly coached the Hornets’ summer league team. Ewing has been an assistant under Jeff and Stan Van Gundy and Clifford, and all had significant conversations with Georgetown officials and the Korn Ferry search firm about their belief in Ewing’s potential as a head coach, league sources told The Vertical.

Ewing, 54, has long been committed to pursuing an NBA head-coaching job and was close to getting the Sacramento Kings’ job in the spring. Only the sudden availability of Dave Joerger, whom Memphis fired, stood between Ewing and a formal offer, league sources said.

Ewing was a three-time All-American for the Hoyas and a 1984 national champion. As the No. 1 overall pick in the 1985 NBA draft by the New York Knicks, Ewing’s illustrious playing career is synonymous with the start and the ultimate height of the Hoyas dynasty.

Ewing has proven himself to be a tenacious worker and engaged tactician in the NBA as part of staffs with Clifford and the Van Gundys.

For Georgetown, Ewing’s candidacy represented the most opportunistic scenario to keep the school’s coaching job in the Hoyas family. Since John Thompson Jr.’s hiring in 1972, the program has had only three coaches – Thompson, Craig Esherick and John Thompson III.

Jeezus!!! :itsawrap:

Real question, has anyone really considered the reasons why Patrick has been overlooked so much for head coaching jobs? The generic response will always be because he's black but put some thought into the question and at least try and answer it objectively.

Congrats to him

He 7 foot

Seems like they rather hire guards than big men for coaching as if they don't know or can't teach the game

Everyone pays their dues for the most part whether on the bench of in the front office so I feel his shot was eventually coming.

Also the league likes to use coaches from winning trees and Pat unfortunately hasn't been on any as a player or coach.

yup

my thing if Chris Mullin got a gig and so did Jason Kidd and D Fish...

I got NO PROBLEM with Ewing getting this shot he DESERVES it.

Its funny we see these out and out FAILURES in white coaches nobody says sh*t.

Why can't Georgetown show LOYALTY just like these good ole boys do?

Props! Proud to see Pat finally getting that chance to shine. Wishing him nothing but the best. Sometimes it takes a minute...what he does from here is what matters.

Think, Aaron Rogers took all kind of shit off of Brett for yrs. Got that opportunity and may go down as even greater than #4. Just gotta earn your spot...and who you get there, show em why you deserved it!

Absolutely... I see no problem with the Loyalty aspects, my problem is, I would have liked to see his first opportunity be on the NBA level is all... College coaching is a whole different animal, and with them expecting results asap, its gonna be hard for him to build the relationships he needs in such a quick expected turnaround...

As a die hard Syracuse guy that was in school the same time as Pat, I'm happy for him. I think if he can start getting blue chip talent here in the DMV and nationally, Georgetown will be back in the conversation of great programs. When I was in school, G'town was top five in the country...PERIOD!! Hopefully they can get back to that level of relevancy....at least top 15.

You aint say nothing wrong...

But that pro job wasn't gonna happen.

if he can learn how to recruit he will be fine
coach cal of kentucky is a horrible coach but he has that world wide wes connect and wins on talent alone
ewing needs to get in good with one of these scumbags and he'll be straight

I hope he can get NY VA NJ Philly Maryland DC on lock on both the private & public school level

No doubt Fam! Like I said, I HOPE he does well, I'm pulling for him to do well, would be a helluva story, but its gonna be an uphill climb for the good brother...

At this point it's all about recruiting...

He gonna have to go the one and done route

And John Jr was on some private school clean stuff...

That ain't gonna work

Pat need to use ALL his connects...MJ, NBA, Nike, Falk, Riley, Dikembe, Zo...

hell even the gold club.

A more real version of what I've been trying to say Bruh...

Patrick paid his dues as assistant coach for 15 years. If scott skiles can get 3 nba coaching jobs and scott brooks get 3 jobs as well. I dont see why ewing didnt get one nba head coaching gig.

However he has his hands full with the georgetown program. I think he needs to recruit internationally hard and find a big man. Georgetown needs to get back to being the place for CENTERS to dominate. Ewing can help build a great frontline. Its a great hire for georgetown..

My only thing with patrick was the recruiting trail....but with help maybe he can change that

Patrick Ewing Says He Can't Keep His Son On Staff Because Of Georgetown's Nepotism Clause

Georgetown basketball legend Patrick Ewing, newly hired as the men’s basketball coach at his alma mater, went on The Sports Junkies this morning to dish about his new job. A few tidbits: After coaching in the NBA, Georgetown was the only college gig he would take; he’s always valued his former coach John Thompson Jr.’s advice and will continue to do so; and he’s not worried about recruiting. Also, he said he can’t keep his son, Patrick Ewing Jr., on the coaching staff because of nepotism clause.

“It is 100 percent your son is going stay on staff, right?” the hosts joked.

“I wish, I wish that that could be that case, you know, they have a nepotism clause and unfortunately they’re going to stand by it,” Ewing said.

“Is that an NCAA thing or a Georgetown thing?”

“It’s a Georgetown thing to my knowledge,” Ewing said before the hosts said that they would “lobby on your behalf.”

“Please do, please do,” Ewing laughed.

Ewing is taking over for Thompson’s son, John Thompson III, who was fired after two losing seasons. Ewing Jr., who also played at Georgetown after transferring from Indiana, has been the director of basketball operations for the Hoyas since August 2015. Are we sure that nepotism clause is working?

Correction (11:45 a.m. ET): This post has been updated to reflect that Ewing Jr. transferred to Georgetown from Indiana.

Very excited that we will be streaming the presser tomorrow on Facebook Live!

3:48 PM - 4 Apr 2017

Prior to this morning’s press conference, Ewing made an appearance on The Sports Junkies radio show, in which he revealed the following, courtesy of commenter aja32.

Staffing:

Looking to bring in college guys more than NBA guys. PE Jr. not staying on staff due to Georgetown’s nepotism clause.

Asked if he’d add Wingate, others to the staff:

Not to the staff but definitely going to be talking to all those guys to keep them engaged in the program

On JT2:

If I have issues or problems I have no problem picking up the phone and asking him for advice

On recruiting and filling out the roster this year. Will he bring in JUCOs, etc. to fill out roster?

Something Lee Reed and I are talking about. Don’t want to bring in recruits right out of high school who won’t work out long term.

To the fans

We need Hoya Nation to stand up and – I won’t say pressure them – but to help make sure recruits know that the Hoyas are here and we want them.

You ready to recruit?

There are a lot of young guys in the NBA, I’ve already had to know how to work with a younger generation. I am going to have great recruiters on my staff

On Georgetown vs NBA jobs:

The only reason I am back in college is because it’s Georgetown. Just thought this was a great fit, great opportunity to work in a program that I cherish

Assorted other things – he still needs to find a house in DC

Video of the appearance is below:

We’ll have live coverage of the press conference right here on THE GLOBAL PHENOMENON, as our own Ben Standig and Bobby Bancroft will be in attendance and perhaps asking a few of your questions.
