Years ago one of my coworkers knew a dude that worked at a camera warehouse... was stealing trunk loads of 2-300 at a pop.... like no one was going to notice them missing..... too dumb to just go for a couple of dozen.... they were like $5-600 easy.... needless to say, he dropped off the radar with that quickness.... no doubt got arrested

Man…for centuries. We are the result.

If you are familiar with the Kardashev scale and how it measures the different types of civilizations from the scale of type one to five, then you should understand that economic systems also have different types or levels. For example, during the old days, most nations went from hunt and gathering, to bartering, to coin/gold based, to banking system to now what I refer to as the nuke based economy. And the way things are progressing, we are fastly moving from a cash system or consumer-based economy towards a cashless, automated workforce. One major problem that would have to be worked out is how would things like population growth are going to be managed. Believe it or not, in the past money was often the determining factor on who and who shouldn't be reproduced, often poverty was the slap on the wrist for those who didn't listen, but as the result the system usually got cheap labor to exploit. But in tomorrows world there will be very need for cheap labor (computers/robotics/automation) so the role of governing or managing the population will become a growing issue, to the likes that (if you are able to spot the signs) are starting to line up in place today.
I think what's going on with the crime, politics, civil unrest and even the pandemic will be used to sweeten the transition of what's to come.
As far as the world being one of the haves and the have nots, well this is really going to depend on how future societies manage their populations and this will be very tricky with the mindset of today's people, where most believe that government has no power telling people what to do. I really believe that the world governments have at least 25 years to change the people mindset, or else all will be fucked up forever (the reasons I will not go into right now, but some of the obstacles involved, global warming and the task of bringing the carbon footprint to net zero in 25 years, massive job reduction due to automation, and the reduction of natural resources that is allowing us to live our current lifestyle).
It's a deep subject, one I try to constantly keep abreast on, but not one that can be fully summarized in a small thread, but I invite all to speculate and question, because I would like it to have more input from people who look, sound and are in similar situations as me because it is something we all might have to face one day.

I somewhat agree the only part I cannot fully cosign is the dystopian part.
But I will say it can go either way, dystopian or utopian, but the margin of error is very low, and not only is the time ticking, but we also have one shot to get things right, and if we fail there are no do-overs.
