Tyrion is the key. This is a guy who routed Stannis Baratheon at the Battle of Blackwater Bay. Arguably the finest military commander in Westeros. And he's not even a soldier like that. Just a really intelligent, strategic mind. Varys told him straight up that he had the aptitude and disposition to be a great leader but that the world probably would never accept a dwarf for a king. But as an advisor or Hand.... wooohh... look out, the dude is a threat.

It all just works so well together.

Alot of them hate Sam because cowards are despised at The Wall.

The 3 biggest things that are pretty much ‘punishable by death’ for members of the Night’s Watch are:

- oathbreaking
- cowardice
- and desertion

When Sam first arrived at the Wall in Season 1, Episode 4… he admitted he was a ‘coward’… and Grenn & Pip were very worried that all the other Brothers will likewise 'brand them as cowaards' ALSO… just for merely ‘talking’ to him.

But Sam has been protected by Lord Commander Mormont, Jon Snow and Maester Aemon for a very long, long time.

Since they are gone now, he is a ‘target’ for the tendencies of all the murderers and criminals who are at the Wall (against their own will) and need someone to vent their hostility & rage out on for the 'life sentence' they got dealt, when they were forced to 'take the black'.

When he admitted that shit.… he 'sealed his own fate'.

I definitely see the Wildlings saving Stannis ass. His army is dying in that snow and I don't see them beating the Boltons with who is left.
