I understand what y'all saying about the wall, and I think it was just lazy writing in an otherwise well written show.
Because you guys are mentioning nobles and regular people in Jon snow and fat boy. They chose to go there but they weren't criminals.
I guess I keep thinking of the people going to the wall like they were in that one scene with aria headed to the wall.... A caravan of misfits and losers being transported there somewhat against their will and not just some folks rolling up like HEY I WANNA DO THIS HOOK A BROTHER UP YO!

I'm just confused as to what his exit strategy is. Assuming that he successfully gets information from Jon, what does he do next .... just going to walk away? I didn't think leaving the wall and breaking the oath was that easy. Especially since he would have to make it through the North before he'd reach back to the Dreadfort.
The wall is GRRM's distorted version of French Foreign Legion - in the legion it didn't matter if you are a murder or what country you are from... they took you in and trained you and if you survived service (7 or 10 years) - you could choose to leave with a nice payout, French citizenship and a clean slate. There were a few stories of men committing murder then enlisting the next day or criminals on the run signing up and of course the choice after a criminal conviction do time or serve...I understand what y'all saying about the wall, and I think it was just lazy writing in an otherwise well written show.

For regular people the Nights Watch is for criminals and orphans. For Nobles it's more complicated.
You've got people who like Ned's brother Benjen (from season 1) who probably Volunteered. He's like a 3rd son who is never going to inherit (boy was he wrong) so you take a shot at being a leader or commander beyond the wall.
Lord Commander Moremont volunteered because he was ashamed of what his son (Jorah) did in selling some of his people to slavers.
Then you got losers like Janos Slint who basically just fell out of favor with more important people in Kings Landing. So they get a choice, Take the Black or end up in a gutter in Kings Landing or your head on a pike.
I don't think it's bad writing, if the choice is to go to the wall or face harsher punishment... even if not being escorted, I can see a criminal just going there if they don't feel like being on the run the rest of their lives...especially considering they will get food and shelter being there and not be on lock down
it's like if you're sending kids to boot camp or some shit, once they are there, in the right scenario or just from being around each other long enough, you would make friends and form cliques
...and isn't the old blind dude a part of the Targaryen family?
I must have to go back and read. Because in the book he talks about how knew some men for the pie and doves or something like that.
questions? I thought the Walkers were marching towards the wall. Didn't the fat dude see them at the end of a season?
The deserters on the other side of the wall.........why don't the widlings attack them?

The White Walkers are ancient beings, they've been at Westeros for thousands of years....

I don't think the wildlings have come into the vicinity of them as yet, which is why Jon us racing to get to the deserters before the wildlings do.
So without going too much into detail, book readers, are you enjoying the deviation from the source material or would you prefer it stick to the books?

The deviations are not minor. The showrunners have changed EVERYTHING regarding Jon Snow, Bran and the Wall. This is a whole new story.these deviations are minor, and since the show runners know how the whole story will end and GRRM consults and writes on the series with them, I'm sure the deviations are part of the setup for the last 2 books

The show runners don't know the whole story. GRRM gave them an idea of how things will end, but not the particulars.
GRMM writes one episode per season. That's it.
GRMM has discussed several times the Butterfly Effect that is going on with the show. The showrunners have killed, kept alive or simply deleted characters throughout the series without knowing how things will turn out in the final two books. GRRM warned them and said fuck it and just keeps collecting his checks.
Is that Grey Worm or Doc Rivers can't decide by the way he jumped to attention and said my Queen to the white woman in the room
Khaleesi damn why you cockblock on Young Obama? He was working on showing Missandei the fist of the Summer Isles
Astapor had a nostalgia store that made Targaryen flags and other paraphernalia
The Kingslayer brothers (rock band) sharing jail stories sounded like last Wednesday at the barbershop
The Queen of thrones reminiscing on how she used to throw that pussy "I was good back then" hilarious
The kid whose parents were killed by the Engineers and Ygritte has joined the nights watch
White walkers only let babies in the crew, are they just an army of scary looking nannies?
Looks like George Carlin is taking the baby Ka-el to Castle Greyskull in Eternia
Albino Darth Maul stopped searching for Frodo and the One ring to touch babies with the frostbite
Aging is a muthafuckka...Olenna Tyrell (Diana Rigg) was a dime piece back in the day..
Unsullied Team Six arrives by sea and breaks into Mereen easily and drops off blades

I tell you, there is nothing worse than piss poor leadership. Damn. I've been fighting that my whole life. Idiots in charge. At my job is the easiest way to be promoted, be totally incompetent at your job.Funny, how Alliser is shitting on Jon and yet if it wasn't for Jon about the wildlings, the Night Watch would be unprepared for them...
And how the hell does Jonas Slynt get so much influence....![]()
My dumbass watched that whole entire episode and it just dawned on me who old buddy is that just made friends with jon snow is.....
How he make it to the wall so fast and get put on so easily? Didn't one of the guys call him a ranger when he was checking snow, then snow called him a recruit in the mess hall? I gotta watch this shit again....

who is that dude? Is that the guy that cut off Jamie's hand? I wasn't sure about that
That's why I didn't quite catch who he was off rip because I was shocked at how fast he got to the wall.
I wasn't expecting to see him there until next week and u would have liked to have seen some background as to how he got there when he got there etc etc

So the white walkers were not the "dead army" that was maching towards the wall?
