Many fans who saw Sunday night’s episode of*Game of Thrones,*where the series’ resident psychopath King Joffrey was poisoned and killed at his own wedding, are still reeling. But the actor who plays Joffrey is already moving on.
For the past three years, Irish actor Jack Gleeson has masterfully embodied evil as the spoiled brat who becomes the ruler of the Seven Kingdoms. Yet after his character’s ghastly death, the 21-year-old actor says he plans to retire completely from acting.
Speaking to*Entertainment Weeklyin the wake of the pivotal episode, Gleeson explained, “I’ve been acting since age eight. I just stopped enjoying it as much as I used to. And now there’s the prospect of doing it for a living, whereas up until now it was always something I did for recreation with my friends, or in the summer for some fun. I enjoyed it. When you make a living from something, it changes your relationship with it. It’s not like I hate it, it’s just not what I want to do.”
Gleeson, who comes across as gracious and humble in interviews, started his on-screen acting career with roles in*Batman Begins*and*A Shine of Rainbows.But it was his turn as Joffrey inThrones*that really put him on the map. In a show filled with amoral or despicable characters, Gleeson’s character stood apart as the worst of the pack, a sadistic and cowardly fiend with unmitigated power to boot.
In fact, George R. R. Martin, the author of the*GoT*books from which the HBO series is based on, even admitted to*EW*that he feared Gleeson’s experience playing such a hated character could have put him off of acting. “He created someone that everyone hates, and everyone loves to hate, and that’s a considerable feat of acting,” said Martin. “I feel a little guilty that he’s quitting acting now. I hope that playing Joffrey didn’t make him want to retire from the profession because he does have quite a gift for it.”

In a long andwide-ranging talk*given at the Oxford Union last year, Gleeson said that fame not only “embarrasses” him, but he also feels that being a celebrity is an exercise in “dehumanization.” Despite admitting that he once dreamed of being a famous actor, Gleeson said the reality was far different: “I detested the superficial elevation and commodification of it all, juxtaposed with the grotesque self-involvement it would sometimes draw out of me. Being a faceless member of a mob, I soon realized, is far more comforting than teetering on a brittle pedestal one inch off the ground.”
Now, with the sudden and brutal death of Joffrey, it looks like Gleeson can work on returning to that faceless mob. He’s currently a student at Trinity College in Dublin, though he’s said he no longer is drawn to academia. He said he’s not yet sure what type of career he’d like to embark on.
But is there any hope for*Thronesfans, who might have hated Joffrey, but have come to appreciate Gleeson’s obvious talent? Maybe. Gleeson did discuss a potential return to the screen with*EW, jokingly saying, “When I’m destitute in 10 years time, I’ll accept any script!”

Went back and started re-watching the series. The first couple eps, Sansa was a little bitch willing to sell her family out to get what she wanted. Joffrey was so mean you forget all that and start to feel bad for her. Fuck her!

wrong thread to big up Justified in... its a great show great writing, but its apples and oranges... GRRM's story is utterly ruthless. Elmore Leonard never came close to it.

But Dean-Charles Chapman's takeover of the role of Tommen Baratheon is unique: It's the second role the 16-year-old has played on the series.
The casual "GoT" viewer might have missed it, but Chapman previously played Martyn Lannister, the army squire who, along with his brother Willem, was murdered by Rickard Karstark in Season 3. Tracing out the Lannister family tree, Martyn was the son of Kevan Lannister, Tywin Lannister's brother. He was a first cousin to Tommen's parents, Cersei and Jamie. So Chapman is currently playing the first cousin once removed of the character he originally played on "GoT."

Kid actor Callum Wharry played Tommen in Seasons 1 and 2, but, as Chapman confirmed in a red carpet interview before the Season 4 premiere, Tommen plays a bigger role in Season 4. And as readers of the "Game of Thrones" books know, a slightly older actor playing the role is more appropriate for some of the action that lies ahead. Now that King Joffrey has been permanently dethroned, little brother Tommen, who Chapman describes as "a nice kid," is next in line to sport the crown.
As he told Vulture, he was surprised to learn just how prominent a role Tommen would play in Season 4.
"I was like, 'Whoa!'" he said. "I know it sounds silly, but I hadn't read the scripts, and I didn't know what had happened. And then I flew over to Belfast so they could dress me for wardrobe, and the lady said, 'OK, let's get your crown on.' And I was like, 'Crown?' 'Yeah, you know, you're going to be king!'
"So I just stood there, looking in the mirror, with this thing on my head, stunned."

But that's not all – he's holding it with this right hand, the one that was cut off and replaced with a gold prosthetic. So, not only does King’s Landing have paper cups and a coffee chain, it has a facility for regrowing limbs. It's an even more magical place than we'd originally thought.

If "Game of Thrones" costs around $6 million an episode to make, and there are no commercials shown during the show, how does anybody make money off the series?
By being insanely, widely, and increasingly popular, that's how.
And by the way, some episodes of "Game of Thrones" actually have cracked that obscene average budget of $6 million per. That Battle of Blackwater episode? Where the Imp leaked a ship's worth of highly flammable Mountain Dew into the harbor and blew up half of Stannis's army? That cost a reported $8 million. So there.
If math serves, we're looking at an estimated $60 million to $70 million in costs per season — almost as much as a modestly budgeted theatrical film, but without the benefit of theatrical distribution. But no matter, says Jon Lafayette, business editor at the trade publication Broadcasting & Cable.
"HBO is the most profitable network in TV," Lafayette tells me. "They're known for spending a lot of money working with hot producers, spending a lot of money on content and production, and that's why people subscribe to HBO."
More precisely, that's why there are an estimated 30 million to 40 million people between HBO and sister network Cinemax, both of which fall under the same Time Warner umbrella. And Lafayette estimates that about $10 per month goes to HBO from a cable subscriber's monthly premium package.
So. Multiply, say, $35 million times 10, and you get... much more than $70 million.
"They don't have to make money back on advertising," Lafayette says. "HBO also has a healthy aftermarket in DVDs and online products, and that's also become a way to move HBO around the world and into markets where they don't have the HBO channel."
Right around now is where we should mention piracy. "Game of Thrones" remains one of the most pirated shows on the airwaves. But even that fact doesn't make a significant dent in income — at least, not on the subscriber side, and not in the long term.
"We've been dealing with this for 20, 30 years — people sharing [subscriptions], running wires down the backs of apartment buildings," Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes told AdWeek in August. "Our experience is that it leads to more paying subs. I think you're right that 'Game of Thrones' is the most pirated show in the world.
"That's better than an Emmy."
If that analysis doesn't quite convince you, remember this: The DVD for each season of "Game of Thrones" sells for a Lannister-worthy $60-ish on HBO's website.
