Way back in Season 1,right after Ned died,Rob needed to cross the Twins to march but he needed the Freys permission...After,Catelyn negotiated,one of the terms was Rob to married one of Walder Frey's daughters but Rob married someone else..
Walder Frey felt he was slighted,so he made a deal with Tywin but they need someone inside Rob's camp to set it up,which brings up House Bolton....Someone been sending Tywin letter,back and forth telling him,what's going on inside Rob's camp.
It was Roose Bolton who was sending Tywin messages,since Season 2.....
It was Rob's fault for not keeping his word.....this death is on him....
The one thing I dont understand is why Catelyn just stood there when they was playing "The Rains of Castamere".....She knows that song very well and yet she sat her ass back down....

The Freys served them food as guests. The laws of hospitality state that no harm can be brought upon a guest when they break bread. They made sure that they had a scene where everyone grubbed down. Catelyn thought they had nothing to fear since they ate food. When the Rains started playing and they bolted the door, the writing was on the wall and shit was too late.

This was a power move for Houses Bolton and Lannister. Walder Frey however, is just butt hurt that one of his ugly ass daughters wouldn't be "queen". Dude broke with the rule of hospitality and this betrayal is actually the final nail in the coffin for House Frey as well.

I haven't read the books either. I stumbled across the wiki for the books instead of the wiki for the show and was horrified. I assumed everyone in this thread was either an informed book reader or an TV show watcher. Don't usually hear of people reading the book after the "big secret" has already been divulged.
