Game Of Thrones: The Sopranos with swords or Dynasty in chainmail?

'Game of Thrones' showrunners tease Oberyn vs. The Mountain: 'The fight delivers beyond our expectations'

When Game of Thrones returns after the Memorial Weekend holiday, fans will witness what is arguably the best fight scene in the show’s history of gripping fight scenes.

It’s a Trial by Combat grudge match to the death between Prince Oberyn Martell (aka The Red Viper) and Ser Gregor Clegane (a.k.a The Mountain That Rides), with the life of fan favorite Tyrion Lannister (a.k.a The Imp) hanging in the balance. As viewers saw on Sunday’s episode, Oberyn volunteered (“I will be your champion”) to fight for the unjustly condemned Tyrion against the crown’s formidable victor The Mountain, whom the prince believes killed his sister Elia and her children many years ago. On a show that typically delights in moral complexity, the stage is set for a gladiatorial spectacle between a Dornish prince who has charmed fans since his introduction in the fourth season premiere and one of the show’s most barbaric longtime villains.

Showrunners Dan Weiss and David Benioff teased the bout (without spoilers) after shooting the sequence last fall. “It’s one of the best — if not the best — combat scenes we’ve done so far,” Weiss said. “It’s not just people hacking at each other with spears and swords. It’s the culmination of 20 years of anger and hatred and thirst for vengeance coming to a head in this amazing set piece that [stunt coordinator Paul Herbert and swordmaster C.C. Smiff] have put together. The fight delivers beyond our expectations.”

Plus, Tyrion’s neck is on the line, so the stakes are very high. “And there’s that,” Weiss said. “One of the most important characters in the show will live or die based on this fight.”

Thrones recast the role of The Mountain this season due to the demands of the fight sequence, signing 420-pound Icelandic strongman competitor Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson to takeover the part.

“It’s one of those fights that from the very beginning of the process of planning the show before season one we knew would be a high point if done properly,” Weiss said. “And it’s a real challenge because The Mountain is The Mountain — you need to find an enormous human being who can also deliver what you need on physical front. And you need an Oberyn who delivers what you need as an actor and pull off the extremely strenuous side of that fight, which we shot over several days. We were lucky to find Pedro Pascal for Oberyn, who gives such a stunning, fun, and dangerous performance. And Hafþór for The Mountain is a truly unusual specimen — I believe he’s the third-strongest man in the world and a former basketball player, so he knows how to move. To see somebody who is 6′ 9″ and moving the way he does in person is a surreal sight to behold.”

friend and I was talking about this...my guess is there's so many diff characters that have to share screen time that some of these actors are hardly on screen esp. in comparison to shows where one or two characters practically carry a show on a weekly basis...here's a list of the characters who received the most screen time for season 3...in a 10 hour season dinklage was on screen for an hour...there was also a pie chart someone posted here showing overall he's received the most screen time...so he's def earned the supporting actor emmy that he received...doesn't seem fair that the other actors should get it given their limited time when you have other actors carrying shows w/ their performances on a weekly basis...I'm surprised tho that the show overall hasn't won an award for best drama or w/e...just looked it up and it's only been nominated once for an emmy...crazy

HBO: Why 'Game of Thrones' gets robbed at Emmys

When it comes to the industry’s biggest awards, Game of Thrones is almost always the bridesmaid. The HBO fantasy hit has racked up a hugely impressive 42 prime-time Emmy and Golden Globe nominations across its first three seasons. It’s also won 11 of those awards, mainly for categories like visual effects, make-up, costumes and sound effects. Yet in the major categories — best series, acting, writing and directing — Thrones has taken home just two statues (a Globe and Emmy for Peter Dinklage as best supporting actor).

What gives?

We asked HBO’s programming president Michael Lombardo about this topic during a Thrones interview, and he suggested the show’s fantasy setting and high production values might distract from the talent on display. “What frustrates me about the show is people really love and connect with the characters — but somehow, [the voters] don’t put two and two together that there are great actors embodying those roles,” Lombardo says. “There seems to be a disconnect. This would not work without compelling writing and unbelievable acting and superb direction. And I think that’s part of the challenge of a show that’s a genre show. I think people think the show is carried along on its production values.”

Indeed, Dinklage gives a tremendous performance, and the show’s current fourth season is almost certainly his best. But there are others amid Thrones‘ sprawling cast that one would think would get recognized as well – Emilia Clarke received an Emmy nomination last year, and Diana Rigg had a guest actress nod. But there’s also Charles Dance, Lena Headey, and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, among others, doing consistently excellent work. There’s also the show’s writing, led by showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss. “David and Dan are not just good — they are exceptional writers,” Lombardo says. “Their scripts are as dazzling as anything I’ve ever read. This isn’t pulled out of a book.”

The direction on Thrones is also stunning. Hollywood recognized the talent of long-time TV director Alan Taylor’s work on Thrones’ first season, and snatched him up to helm Thor: The Dark World and the upcoming Terminator reboot. Yet the TV Academy didn’t nominate his work (and likewise snubbed David Nutter, who directed last year’s heart-stopping Red Wedding episode). The only Emmy nomination for outstanding direction that Thrones has received, oddly enough, was for its stiff, heavily re-shot pilot.

“I look at it relative to other shows, and these are artists working at the absolute top of their game,” Lombardo says. “Peter Dinklage is as good as any actor on TV. Lena is phenomenal. I guess they’re so good you’re not aware of it. And it’s not about getting awards for HBO, but for them. Behind the dragons and costumes and landscapes there’s unbelievable talent at work. And none of it would be be emotionally relatable if not for artistry in the writing, directing and acting.”

It’s not the first time a ground-breaking top-rated HBO genre series has had Emmy struggles. The Academy was also long accused of undervaluing The Sopranos, though the mob drama actually performed better in its early years in the top categories than Thrones.

Adds the executive: “We’re so pleased with the show, and I would hate to sound the least bit sour grapes, because the response from fans is so spectacular. But [greater awards recognition] would be nice.”

Yeah I could see that as far as the actors but as you pointed out the show itself doesn't get nominated. Same goes for director's, writers, etc.

I can see your argument about the actors but I can't see the continual snubs of the show itself and some of its producers, writers, directors, etc.

I was one of them until that chick got all highfalutin, deciding she had morals and self respect and wanting to keep her clothes on and be known for her acting and not her body:angry:

Who the fuck does she think she is:angry::smh:

A whole season almost past and not even one nipple:(

this is funny. I have heard the same thing. It is sad that the show does not get nominated for more Emmys or Golden Globes, but I don't think The Wire want anything during its time on HBO. The Sopranos was too busy winning them all even though it was subpar in relation to the wire as an entire piece of work. Season one was great season 2 was pretty good but after that it was like Quentin Tarantino after pulp fiction, living off the legend rather than the quality of the present.

Got stuck out by fam and they don't have HBO...jeez...anyone got a link? Don't wanna wait to see this. Aint shit poppin here.

NEVERMIND: My TV GO to the rescue.
