When ORTOFON Vinyl Preservation Academy approached me about making a video using their new VNL cartridges, I knew immediately what I wanted to do - and what better way to test the capabilities of a DJ needle than with real vinyl, right?
So.....this marks the first time performing my routine in almost 10 years!
A video that I reluctantly posted to YouTube back in 2011 with ZERO expectations, and even doubts about how it might be judged against current turntablism standards
To my surprise however, it became a bonafied viral hit and to date it’s been featured in a Netflix documentary
a popular video game franchise
a catwalk fashion show in Sweden
a primetime commercial on German TV
an art projection in New York
and an exhibition at the Museum of Image and Sound in Brazil
I still smile when I hear of how # continues to impact audiences and DJ careers worldwide, but as I’ve been blessed to inspire others through this medium, it would only be right to acknowledge the sources of inspiration that contributed to its existence, and to my continued love for this culture
I came up watching the DMC World DJ Championships from the mid 90s with champions such as DJ CRAZE A-Trak DJ KENTARO DjNoize whose routines all showcased impeccable technical skill and smart compositions without compromising listenable musicality
Such balanced vinyl routines are damn near impossible to make, so was my humble attempt to pay homage to the craft from this “golden” era that resonated with me so much back then
So here it is.... : for 2020 and beyond, dedicated to my inspirations, my peers, and all of you who continue to support my work, old and new.... I hope you will love this lightly modified version just as much as the original
It’s been a tough year for us all but please stay inspired and keep creating because like I always say - , and you never know who might be watching
