I am dark skinned, had what is deemed as good hair, have 2 nephews that live by that "I don't want dark skin kids therefore I'm not dating black women" crap, and was/still is treated differently because of my dark skin.
We all know the reality of the situation..

My wife is a dark skin Dominican and she have talked about the treatment she face by other Blacks because of complexion.
I can only speak from what I heard from the interview, but it seems the MAIN reason Duke didn’t have kids was because he was focus more his career and less about being dark skinned. I’m not suggesting that being dark isn’t part of it, but he seemed pretty clear on his inability to father a child the way he sees fit while focusing on his career.
His personal experience of being dark and discriminated against is a psychological thing. And seems to even caused a level of trauma that he would just rather avoid that all together. To some people, that can come off as self-hate. Not in a sense of hating to be black, but more so aware of the reality of being dark skin in this society. I don’t take the legend as that type of person, but if true, then I can understand the difficulties of trying to overcome that insecurity.

My confidence now is so high I don’t even see other muthafuckas when I’m focused on what I need or want. They are irrelevant

The one of the hardest things for me about being a parent is getting my daughter to not care what people think about her. She is a people pleaser and wants to be nice to everyone, even if they don’t deserve it. She think she can win the world over by being nice.
Granted, she’s only 11, but it’s frustrating to see at times that she cares so much what people thinks of her.
Yea I gotta thank my pops for that. I remember one day I went to the office and wouldn’t talk to anyone. No teachers or anything. When pops cane tru the door I broke down in his arms

My soul was crushed. Pops was like “man so what if you’re black, they’re ugly!!” And he just knew how to use a little humor along with truth to get his point across. He’s dark skinned to so he’s been through the same. He said it was harder for him cuz in his prime the 70s &80s the yellow niggas ruled. But that self confidence has my dad on a whole other level.
I love pops for that. My son takes after his mother’s complexion but his face looks just like mine. People praise how handsome he is and shit because he’s light and I know this. I teach him to love himself and to have brains to go along with looks.
Bill Duke grew up in a different era and has the right to feel the way he feels. He will always be a legend in my eyes.
I'm not a Vlad fan, but he's doing something no one else is really doing and that's interviewing anybody lol. Yes there are a lot more people in the culture with interview shows, but they only interview people they like, people they are cool with. Vlad will interview anyone with that will get him views. Until Vlad nobody was sticking a mic in Lord Jamal's face asking his opinion.
Admittedly, I’ve definitely had perks being light skin, and unfortunately my ignorance had me “downing” dark skin women when I was younger. Not so much in a hatred sort of way, but my corrupt thinking blinded me from seeing beauty in dark skin women.
There are all type of factors that contributed to this, but light skin was still a thing in the 90s. My wife has been the only dark skin woman I ever dated. Everyone else was brown or light skin.
My father is brown and my moms is a high yellow red bone. Lol.
But it’s cool to hear how much a moment can change your life forever. My daughter had that “I wish I was white” phase when she was around 5 or 6, but I’ve countered that pretty solid. She far from militant black, but she is proud of who she is.
Crazy to think about how much race fucks with us our entire life. White folks can never understand this and I have even admitted that I was jaded within our own community as well.

I can't stand Vlad interviewing rappers or ex gang members or anything to do with street shit. I do enjoy his interviews with comedians and actors and others. He has really grown his brand in the last couple of years. His interview with Fab Morvan was nice.
Plenty of others? Really? Let's be honest, Vlad has interviewed a lot of forgotten legends and it doesn't have to be about promoting a product. You have every right to not like him but his 3 million subscribers and numerous repeat guest interviewers tells the real story. Majority of which are black folks.

I’ve thought about different realities she will present to me. I can’t control how she chooses to live when she is grown. I just hope I have guided her in a responsible way because I have no idea what I am doing as a parent. Lol.
