I think what the OP is saying here is that some Hispanics will not learn English in order to cater to the people who don't speak it in the US. I have no problems with them speaking Spanish in their private lives; they can speak it all day long. But when it comes to Business in the US, they need to learn English.

Being Multilingual is a great thing. But, you use other languages when your in atmosphere that calls for it.

When is China, attempt to speak Chinese
When in Columbia, attempt to speak Spanish

And when in the US, attempt to speak English.

When you come to this country, the first thing that comes to mind is English. It's a multicultural society that interacts through the English language. America wouldn't be so mixed if these different people couldn't find a common ground for communicating.

This country would break if there wasn't a common language that everyone had to learn. If the Chinese only spoke Chinese, The Portuguese only spoke Portuguese, the Italians only spoke Italian, the Senegalese only spoke French-Fula- etc, and it goes on--> This country would break into segments. The Central American contingency is strong here in D.C., and many of them simply want to work to provide for their families. I know honest, hard working spanish folk who came here to better themselves from where they were, and yes i'm going to say it, they work harder than most black people do. A lot of them, whether it's working at KFC, Taco Bell, Construction, you name it, are glad to be employed, and appreciate their jobs, no matter how little it may be.

Why learn English when all the fucking signs in the bank and the city is in spanish.

I can't stand illegals as much as the next person, but we need to teach our children that learning a second or third language is the way to go. Whether it's Spanish, French, Japanese, Russian--doesn't matter. Being bilingual already gives someone an advantage and the children of these illegals (if they are fluent in both English and Spanish) already have an advantage from the get-go no matter how we may feel about them. I agree 100% that people need to learn English to live in the USA but I wish the US would encourage multilingualism. I am very blessed to be bi-lingual (soon to be trilingual if my Chinese keeps improving) and it has opened a world of doors to me.
