Beliefs and attitudes about African American women’s sexuality appear to be sanctioned by a culture that continues to embrace stereotypes about race and sexuality. This is made especially clear when one scans media models available for women. The good, innocent, virginal girl continues to be an idealized image of womanhood associated with white females, but unattainable for African American females. Differentiating African American adolescent women’s sexuality from white women’s reinforces their positions as individuals standing on the margins of society, clarifying its Freaks, Gold Diggers, Divas, and Dykes 5 boundaries (Hill Collins 2000; hooks and Manning 2000). This socially constructed image of white womanhood further relies on the continued production of the racist/sexist myth that African American women are not and do not have the capacity to be sexually innocent
