Former NFL wide receiver David Patten, who won three Super Bowl titles with the New England Patriots, was killed in a motorcycle crash Thursday outside Columbia, South Carolina, according to Richland County Coroner Naida Rutherford. He was 47.

According to South Carolina Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Nick Pye, a motorcycle driver -- identified by the coroner as Patten -- crossed the median, causing a crash involving two other cars. One of the cars' drivers was also taken to a hospital with undisclosed injuries.

The crash remains under investigation by the highway patrol and the coroner.

"I am heartbroken by the news of David's passing," Patriots owner Robert Kraft said in a statement. "He was a devout Christian who followed his passion following his football career and founded his own ministry. David transitioned from an undersized and understated wide receiver to a powerful and passionate preacher. In New England, he will always be remembered as a three-time Super Bowl Champion."

Patten played for five teams over a 12-year NFL career but is best known for his four seasons with the Patriots from 2001 to 2004. He caught the only offensive touchdown for the Patriots during their first Super Bowl win, in the 2001 season against the Rams, hauling in an 8-yard pass from Tom Brady to give New England a 14-3 lead just before halftime.

When he retired during Patriots training camp in 2010, Patten described his time with the Patriots as the highlight of his career.

"It breaks my heart to hear of David's tragic passing at such a young age," Patriots coach Bill Belichick said in a statement. "I am grateful to have coached David. He is an essential person and player in Patriots history, without whom we would not have been Super Bowl champions."

Former Patriots teammates Richard Seymour and Deion Branch and former New England offensive coordinator Charlie Weis were among those eulogizing Patten on social media Friday.

David Patten played key role in Patriots' dynasty

Patten — who was not selected in the 1996 NFL draft — played for five different teams over his 12-year NFL career, but is most known for his time with the Patriots. After playing in the Arena Football League, Patten made the New York Giants in 1997. He played with the Giants and Cleveland Browns before joining the Patriots for the 2001 season, in which the team went on to win the Super Bowl.

Patten only caught one ball in that game, but it was a memorable one. With the Patriots looking to score before halftime, Patten made a leaping catch near the back of the end zone to extend the team's lead.

The Patriots went on to beat the Rams 20-17.

Patten remained with the Patriots through 2004, winning three total Super Bowls with the club.

During those four seasons, Patten emerged as one of Tom Brady's most dependable targets. Patten never exceeded 1,000 receiving yards, but was a consistent producer on some excellent teams. His finest season came in 2004, when Patten caught 44 passes for 800 yards and seven touchdowns.

Damn.... I am seriously considering getting a bike, then I see stories like this:smh:

RIParadise....
One of my good friends got decapitated, RIP Boogie Black. Another potnah, was skipping off the road like a kid skipping rocks over a pond. He burned his nipple off. One of my frat brothers fractured his leg so bad that he had to get it amputated after 6 surgeries to try to save it. Fuck them motorcycles man.

I gave up riding, when I moved to FL.
I lost at least 1 friend a year from 1999 - 2014 to bikes.
Just lost my homie, in July. He gave up riding for 10-12 years, only to get back in the saddle earlier this year. :smh:
One more thing, I almost killed a mofo on a motorcycle. I was coming out of my neighborhood. I made that same turn a hundred times with no one on the street. Fool on a motorcycle was speeding right when I turned. I barely missed him. I was in my Avalanche. He would have been dead af.

Bro, even as a former rider who makes every effort possible to look out for bikes. I have almost written off many many riders. When I used to ride, I was almost hit or run off of the road just about every time that I rode. Bikes are nothing to fuck around with. It's not if you will fall, but when. Full disclosure, I was reckless and did very stupid shit. Funny thing is when I had my worst accident, I was chilling riding the speed limit. 2 dudes were racing on the Belt parkway, this Maxima drifted slightly into my lane and clipped my mirror and foot peg. I had a chick on with me, (shorty was ok, just scratched up). I received a broken tib/fib and chipped ankle for my trouble. If it wasn't for a chico blocking the road with his work truck, we would have almost certainly been run over.

One of the absolutely worst things that I've personally witnessed, was a dude riding over the 59th street bridge wilding out and racing with some other cat. Nigga didn't see cars stopped ahead, lockup his brakes, and was catapulted over the guardrail and off the side of the bridge. I can still hear the crash , dude screaming, and then silence... Yeah, fuck those bike Brah.

Damn :smh: RIP to your people man. Yeah....Especially at my age, I don't need to be dealing with a bunch of injuries fuckin' with these bikes.

they say you never ever supposed to get too comfortable...

riding anything.. truck, motorcycle, bike, all ride with a tad

of extra alertness..

Its that over confidence that seems to get dudes hemmed up...

I seen a photo of an after math of a motorcycle accident..

I kid you not the motorcycle rider with helmet on, hit the back

of a truck so hard..

he literally embedded himself in the back of the truck, helmet halfway through

the truck head inside and his limp body just hanging outside the truck,

they say he was going so fast he died instantly.....

I saw that pic and put my motorcycle dreams on hold...

I haven’t ridden a motorcycle in over 10 years, fun times! I remember wanting there to be standstill traffic so that I could ride in between the lanes! :giggle:

Strangely I saw a motorcycle rider on the freeway yesterday. Don’t know what made me think it but there was lots of traffic and he looked so small with all the cars around him.

It looked like he was damn near on a unicycle on the freeway. It just made me realize how dangerous an accident is for bikers.:(

I'm gonna get me a bike again. I ain't rode in about 9 years at this point. I want a Harley Bagger. Straight boss shit. When I used to live in the A I use to be young an dumb on them bikes. I remember I made it from Lithonia to Union City in under 20 mins. Anybody know about the A know how fast you got to be going to do that.

Nice knowing you...

Rest in peace.

Pops rode from the mid-60s to late-80s or so. Had some friends who were killed, and had a few close calls himself. Said it's the little things that'll fuck you up when riding. Sudden lane changes from cars ... people pulling into traffic from being parallel parked (without a signal of course). His injuries consisted of arm & wrist breaks, and some road rash. But said going over the handlebars a 2nd time he realized - "What the fuck am I doing? I've got a young family at home ..." (late-80s). Hasn't rode a bike since ... has always been a cautious driver too. Drives reallllly slowwwwly. Everyone passes him. All the grandmas even.
