Former Chicago Public Schools CEO Gets Prison Time

Barbara Byrd-Bennett pled guilty to steering $23 million in no-bid city contracts in October 2015.

Barbara Byrd-Bennett, the former CEO of Chicago Public Schools, was sentenced to four and a half years in prison on Friday for plotting to collect kickback returns from no-bid city contracts that were worth millions, reports the Chicago Tribune.

From the Chicago Tribune:

U.S. District Judge Edmond Chang sentenced Byrd-Bennett to 4 1/2 years in prison for scheming to collect hundreds of thousands of dollars in kickbacks in return for steering lucrative contracts to SUPES Academy, an education consulting firm where she had formerly worked.

In handing down the sentence, Chang said he needed to send a message to other public officials and corrupt vendors that they face significant time behind bars if they’re caught defrauding the public for their own financial gain. It’s a message that so far has not gotten through, the judge said.

In October 2015, as part of a plea deal, Byrd-Bennett pled guilty to wire fraud and admitted that she was involved in steering over $23 million in contracts to an educational firm where she worked, reports the outlet.

In exchange for Byrd-Bennett's influence, Solomon and Vranas gave her tickets to sporting events, meals and other perks, but no cash actually exchanged hands. Instead, Byrd-Bennett was promised hundreds of thousands of dollars as a "signing bonus" once she left her duties at CPS and rejoined SUPES as a consultant, her plea deal said. The bonus was to be concealed in trust accounts set up in the names her twin grandsons — with the cash available to her once she left CPS.

So she didn't even get any paper beforehand, OR immediately afterwards.....she got what Tariq Nasheed calls "n____ trinkets" in exchange for the promise of money down the line.....she got played and might have been a great educator but was dumber than a box of rocks when it came to business and crime.....you get significant CASH in hand FIRST; you move that shit in the best way possible to keep it from being retrieved when you eventually are caught (because all black officials are eventually caught) and THEN you commence with your role in the scheme; she hustled backwards from the jump.

$23 MILLION....and she had to get other folks involved to make it work and she thought she WASNT going to get caught? You involved in that much, you need to be doing EVERYTHING unilaterally; from the bid review to the awarding to the procurement of dollars....either that or, if you MUST have someone else involved on your end, you've gotta kick them some cash too for their role and silence.....Jesus this was doomed from the RIP.
