Forgotten Rap Artists

This group is the sole reason why it should never be a debate as to who is the best producer ever. Premo made a classic album featuring 2 bums. No other producer has ever done that. The only one to come close was Pete Rock with INI.

I would say Slum Village was better than INI as Pete didn't bring his all on that album. But I 100% agree with the Premo statement!

The used to play this joint on the Video Jukebox like crazy for about a month when I was a kid...haven't heard it in like 25 years.

Looking at this again, did Biggie steal his style? I can see him influencing Biggie.

Oh man the cliché "hail Premo" nigga.
You know you don't have to say that to be hip-hop right?
Premo was alright but all his sampled beats with a scratch sounded the fucking same...nigga didn't know how to make any other beat...that is not a producer to me.

But yet every rapper doesn't think they made it until they rapped on a Premo track.

It's about quality, not quantity. Pete Rock got the horns, Kanye got the soul samples, Timbo bit the entire drum & bass/jungle movement & Premo got the chopped up samples & scratches. It is what he does. And does well.

And it still hasn't been a producer yet that made a classic album with two certified bum ass rappers.

Like I said it's a cliche...you are supposed to say that when you are a rapper.
Premo's beats were all the same, he had no diversity to his sound.
Yes I understand that every "producer" has a signature sound but his shit was just bland.

Could Premo make an R&B record...could Premo make some classic downsouth shit? Could he do anything other than chop an easy sample, throw some lame scratches on it with a voice sample for the chorus?

Back in the day the shit was cool but his sound never evolved...EVER.

Kanye and Timbo shit all over Premo with their diverse catalogue.

Saying Premo is the GOAT is like saying Run DMC are the kings of rap....You are supposed to say the shit.

being the queens nigga i am..

hip-hop trivia:

which rapper first coined the phrase 'hip-hop'?

Cowboy from the Furious Five was the first to coin the phrase hip-hop.

That's your opinion & that's cool. I'll even admit that he does get repetitive at times. But it doesn't take away from his shit being a standard for any true hip-hopper. And I guarantee out of 4 out of 5 Premo joints bump.

BTW, Premo made an R&B record or two (Devil's Pie with D'Angelo, Ain't No Other Man with Christina Aguiliera, Wonder Woman with Lion Babe), a southern joint (Doobie Ashtray with Devin The Dude) & made songs where he didn't chop a sample, scratch or use a voice sample (Animals from the Compton soundtrack).

And his sound did evolve...all you gotta do is listen to his Bars In The Booth work. You used to these producers that steal damn near entire songs, add a breakbeat or two & and add some bullshit, light voiced R&B strumpet for the chorus.

And I'll put "Come Clean" by Jeru The Damaja's instrumental up against any beat from Timbo or Kanye. Especially Kanye.

If Premo isn't the GOAT, then who is? Kanye samples more than Premo does, Timbo is starting to fall off (he stole a fucking genre, so when that genre went away, he got suspect), Dr. Dre takes 8 years to make one instrumental (the only reason we got the Chronic & Doggystyle is probably because Suge threatened to beat his ass daily until it was done), Dilla is gone, Pete Rock is decent but his style is not diverse enough. Who else? El-P is too chaotic, Slug is more underground than Premo, 9th Wonder barely makes beats these days, Banner is going the Dr. Umar route, SwishaHouse is too Houston oriented, who else can stand the test of time & be the GOAT? You tell me...

Peace..

I am going to go back and listen to Premo's catalogue just to see if I'm tripping but as of now I stand by my opinion...Premo is repetitive and dated fam....I will go listen to a bunch of his shit including the joints you listed.

As far as you shitting on Kanye...naw man...Kanye sampled but his shit had a certain feel to it. Him and blaze basically held the rock down for years. His new shit is hit or miss but I believe he is more talented than Premo.

TIMBO....now you are really tripping. Tim is one of the Goats of music period. Preemo could never get a swing on his beats like Timbaland.

peace
