I was fascinated with Erik Von Daniken's books way back. "Chariots of the Gods" was published around the late 1960's (I think). I stumbled across it unintentionally in the 90's. It was the first time I had been introduced to the "Ancient Astronaut" theory.
In the present day, I feel reasonably secure that they attribute many of the great structures and antiquated advanced technologies to ALIENS, to prevent from stating who they really think may have been involved in the creation and construction of these artifacts & structures...
