Food Warriors: 207th Street

Neighborhood: Inwood

At 207th Street the Food Warriors found a variety of options, mostly of the Dominican and Latin American variety. The restaurants recommended by people we talked to on the street included: Guadalupe, La Nueva Espana, District 12 (a sports bar) and ELSA: La Reina Del Chicharron.

The Food Warriors choice came down to Guadalupe and La Reina Del Chicharron and because the latter translated to The Queen of Fried Pork, our path was clear. We ordered the roast chicken, pickled onions and avocado, a beverage that seemed to be orange juice with condensed milk and of course the restaurant's namesake: juicy chicharron, which we highly recommend.

Food Warriors: Beach 90 Street / Far Rockaway

Ride with us at the NEW SITE: http://www.thefoodwarriors.com

At Beach 90th and Mott Ave the Food Warriors took the A all the way to the ocean. At the last stops on our journey, we got a tip from a token booth clerk to check out Rockaway Beach Surf Club for their winter ramen. And then hit the tracks once more to the eastern-most station in the system, Mott Avenue, where we found a diamond in the rough: Ralph’s Diner.

It was two sides to the Rockaways coin. First up was the surf club giving us a glimpse into a hipster tourist diaspora and supplying us with an actual coconut cracked for our drinking pleasure on the spot. Then the ramen warmed us enough for our trip out to Ralph’s, a greasy spoon with real, home-cooked comfort food at the ready. It was double-lunch time again with some breakfast vibe thrown in. We got french toast, grits, eggs n bacon and chicharron, steamed broccoli, pepper steak and avocado with an onion plopped in the middle of it.

Food Warriors: 145th Street

Neighborhood: Harlem (Sugar Hill)

At 145th Street the Food Warriors walked up and down Harlem's historic Sugar Hill and definitely felt the effects of gentrification. Half of the people we spoke to sang the praises of Harlem Public - a fusion hamburger/bar food spot that screamed New Harlem (Peanut butter burgers!). But the other half said hold up, stick with the Famous Fish Market - a fried fish hole in the wall (literally!) with no seating that's occupied the neighborhood for years. AKA: Old Harlem.

As much as a cream cheese burger felt worth trying, the lure of fried fish drew us to the Famous Fish Market where we ordered fried shrimp, fried scallops w/fries and big iced teas with lemon. We would have done fried clams but they were out.

Food Warriors: 168th Street

Neighborhood: Washington Heights

At 168th Street the Food Warriors ran into a busy lunch hour by Columbia Presbyterian hospital. We got a lot of feedback including two nurses who recommended Antika for brick oven pizza. Other locals swore by Malecon and another Dominican spot - El Presidente. One underage resident put us onto Coogan's Bar where an excellent hamburger supposedly awaited us.

Antika finished as a close second. El Presidente took the top spot by virtue of its affordability and VERY generous portions. We ordered the tostone and maduro plantains, roast pork (with extra skin) and Chicharron de Pollo con Hueso with rice and beans - the latter of which was probably a week’s worth of food for less than $10!
