The always-candid Floyd Mayweather Sr. was spotted at Johnny Tocco's in Las Vegas, Nevada, working with standout amateur Kevin Newman. Mayweather Sr. can be a private type of person but is also known for delivering some unique sounds bites whenever he decides to open up.
Floyd Sr.'s son, Floyd Mayweather Jr., recently received a delay on a 90-day jail sentence that was to begin on January 6th and is again eyeing a May 5th return to the ring at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. And with a fight with Manny Pacquiao seeming to be unlikely, and Golden Boy Promotions fighters Saul Alvarez and Robert Guerrero generating some interest, it is Cotto who has been the dark horse in the mix.
While at the gym, I was sure to get Senior’s take on the Cotto talk, and also wondered what his thoughts were on his brother Roger’s latest actions. Yesterday the former world champion and current day trainer Roger was spotted at the formal hearing for Victor Ortiz, as he had intentions of attending to find out whether or not Ortiz would be granted a license for his upcoming fight with Andre Berto at the MGM Grand.
Nevada State Athletic Commission Executive Director Keith Kizer had wanted to speak with Ortiz after seeing a video that was released last month where the former champion was seen claiming that he had intentionally tried to break Floyd Jr.’s nose with his head butts during their fight in September. Ortiz would lose a point from referee Joe Cortiz in the fourth round for his head butt and was subsequently caught off guard by two clean punches from Mayweather that dropped him and ended the fight.
Roger had planned to crash the hearing to make his case that Ortiz should be denied his license but the outspoken coach was late and thus unable to make an impression.
Floyd Sr. feels that his brother was just with his reasoning and revealed why during our interview, also pointing out that he has no ill will towards Roger despite having an up and down relationship with his son.

Why Saul Alvarez shouldn’t mess with Floyd Mayweather Jr….
“He’s an opponent, that’s it. I’m just saying, I do look at the good and I look at the bad. I’m not saying Alvarez is not a good fighter, but messing with someone like my son, he’s totally out of his class.”
How close Floyd Jr. is to his prime…
“I aint going to say he’s in his prime, man. Anybody 35 years old is not in their prime no more. Whether you in your prime or not it’s how you take care of yourself a lot of times. It’s the way you take care of yourself. One thing it is, when a guy like my son, he got heart. So when you got heart, it’s hard to beat anybody who know how to fight who got heart. I’m just saying that, right now, aint nobody prove yet that he aint still in his youth years right now. Aint nobody proved that yet.”
Thoughts on Mayweather’s victory over Ortiz, where he hit Victor with an unsuspecting left-right combination after referee Joe Cortez called both men back to action…
“The fight with Ortiz was correct. It was correct because, the thing is, the referee is the boss in the ring. That’s why he’s in there. You have to have somebody control the fight. When the refs tell you to fight, it’s time to fight. The ref told him ‘It’s time to fight’ and Floyd went and got up in his chest. If you saw, Lil’ Floyd got right up in his chest and he seemed like he was trying to be nice. Floyd stepped up and clipped him. He has already said that he had did that intentionally. When Victor Ortiz head butted Lil’ Floyd up under his chin, now he’s going to put it in the paper and say if they do it again, he’ll do it again. If a man says that, all it’s saying, he could fight Floyd again and get another chunk of money. He knows right there, automatically it isn’t going to be a fight. I think Lil’ Floyd disgraced him the way he beat him and knocked him out and he don’t want to get knocked out again.”

“That’s not surprising. That’s his blood, I don’t see why it’s surprising. He shouldn’t be surprised about it. If Roger did that, I thought it was a grateful thing and the right thing to do.”

“I’m like this right here man. I’m not distant from my brother like everybody thinks I am. If that’s the case I’m distant from Jeff too. I don’t be around Jeff. Even when Jeff and I stayed together, I wasn’t with Jeff. He was with other folks. I was with other guys I hang out with. It aint no thing for me to be hanging out with them. Like I say, we can hang out now, because when they were younger, I was hanging out by myself and I’m still doing the same thing. It’s not no thing because everybody says ‘Oh, Floyd and Roger are this way’.”
Why the Mayweathers are no different than any other family…
“Hey, all family is like that. The Mayweather family is up under the lights. That’s why everybody can say ‘Oh, they’re this way’ or ‘They’re that way’. If it aint on TV, nobody’s seeing it. And if aint nobody seeing it, you aint hearing about it. But that makes it bigger because it’s the Mayweathers.”
Seeing Roger now serving as Floyd’s head coach after years of molding Junior into a fighter…
“Look man, let me tell you something. I’m glad it changed hands from my hands to my brother’s hands. Because I think that was the right thing to do. Not that we broke up that way, but it’s still good that it’s in his hands. We kept it in the family.”
Backing off on the Mayweather-Cotto talk…
“I did say that, I don’t think that might be the case though. I don’t think that’s going to be the case. I had said that before, I thought he was a good one maybe to fight or whatever, because somebody in his camp had told me that. And I took it that it might be Cotto.”
What Floyd should do next…
“I’m going to tell you this right here, if I was my son, I can’t tell him what to do because he’s grown. If I was my son, I would not go fight none of them big a** guys. Big ol’ guys, 160 and sh!t, leave that stuff alone. He would probably beat them, I’m not saying he won’t beat them. It’s still a different kind of punch, I don’t care who it is. He might get away all night long until the last round and then ‘boom’. You never know.”
