Floyd Mayweather Jr. Sounds Off, Blasts "Racist" HBO
Posted by: Mark Vester on 07-04-2008.

In his first interview since announcing his retirement from the sport of boxing several weeks ago, Floyd Mayweather Jr. spoke with David Mayo of the Grand Rapids Press and blasted HBO and their announce team, calling the network and announcers a bunch of racists.

"Even a guy like Jim Lampley, he praises Kelly Pavlik -- who has won some good fights, he beat Jermain Taylor twice, we have to give him credit for that -- but they talk about Kelly Pavlik, a white fighter, like he's the second coming Or they go crazy over Manny Pacquiao. But I'm a black fighter," Mayweather said. "Is it racial? Absolutely. They praise white fighters, they praise Hispanic fighters, whatever. But black fighters, they never praise.

"I've noticed it for a long time but I couldn't say anything because I had to do business with them. I'll still do business with them, but I'm done holding my tongue. I think HBO is great. But their announcers are full of shit."

"Jim Lampley, Larry Merchant, Emanuel Steward, they're always talking about the negative things in my life. But I've seen Jim Lampley in the same strip club as me before. They always want to talk about me going to strip clubs, but they don't want to talk about that. He caught a court case himself, too. But when they catch a case, all they do is take them off the air a couple weeks, then it's over."

Mayweather says that unlike his first retirement after the May 2007 bout with Oscar De La Hoya, he has no plans to return to the sport in the future. He lost the desire long ago and blames the politics of the sport and the politics of HBO as the reasons for his withdrawal from boxing.

"I'm through," Mayweather said. "Once I tell people I'm through, I'm through. People say, 'Oh, he retired and came back, after the De La Hoya fight.' I didn't retire and come back. I just fought one more fight, against Ricky Hatton. And as soon as I beat him, it was, 'What about this guy?' and 'What about that guy?' It's never good enough. Some boxing people weren't going to be happy until I take a loss, and that's not ever going to happen. I achieved all I wanted to achieve.

"And if I did want to come back, I was going to make, what, $50 million (for the De La Hoya rematch)? You know what, don't call my phone unless you've got $100 million. I was truly, truly blessed to have good people around me and I was smart during my career. "I made great investments. By the end of this year, I should be a billionaire."

Wow what an idiot. What safe investments can you make that could turn less than 100 millions into a Billion by the end of this year? This fool most likely was talked into some scam bullshit and will be broke and back in boxing soon. HBO is fucking racist and this fool will make them happy by coming back and getting beat up.

If you got to see fights like bowe vs holyfield and hearns vs hagler... you wouldn't praise that bitch ass dancer PBF either. He was the worst p4p king ever. His retirement is a big blow to boxing haters.

Man you're on the money with that shit! That nigga know damn well he isn't anywhere near that kind of stack.

"And if I did want to come back, I was going to make, what, $50 million (for the De La Hoya rematch)? You know what, don't call my phone unless you've got $100 million."

Is he serious? Floyd has always made bullshit statements like this. The truth is, he's STILL not the most popular boxer out there. Without De La Hoya, he would at most bank 10-12 million against another popular fighter such as Cotto and I still think that's kind of high. He's known but he doesn't have enough of a fanbase to be talking about making 50 million for a rematch that people don't even really want to see that bad. Rematches usually make more money than the first fights but De La Hoya made 30-40 million for the first and would probably make around 40-45 million for the next. Nobody make more than De La Hoya...every boxing fan knows that shit. 50-100 million...Nigga has officially lost his mind if he believes that shit. :smh:

Sound like he and his best friend 50 cent share the same marketing strategy.

This Nigga Floyd talking all this shit and bumping his gums to cause "controversy" to increase the PURSE for when he does fight Oscar... and I'm predicting some time next summer.

Floyd is what 31 years old? He aint done yet. Plus how the fuck else is he going to make $$$? WWE Appearances?

Nigga lives a very lavish and flamboyant lifestyle.

I mean this nigga does not have the personality of Sugar Ray or George Foreman... to make $$$ announcing or marketing shit. The only reason Floyd is relevant...is because he is/was in the ring now.

First, the HBO commentators are biased. They can't stand Mayweather. Old ass Larry and Emmanuel can't wait for him to take an L. Since when is an athelete leaving a violent sport while at the top of their game a bad move. See Jim Brown and Marvin Hagler. The press can't wait for another Mike Tyson to enter the ring so they can cheer when he self destructs. The media hates intelligent Black athletes (Venus and Serena Williams). Remember Ali was one of the most hated Black men in America when he was boxing but they all cheered when he was shaking holding the torch. Secondly, the object of boxing is to hit and not get hit. Floyd is one of the best defensive fighters in history. If you don't like Floyd's style you can't like Sugar Ray's or Pernell Whitaker's. Finally,it is possible that he will be worth a billion by the end of the year. Let's say he made 20 million in purse money 10 years ago. If invested properly that 20 could be worth 100 million today. He could of made a killing by just placing all of his money on himself against De la Hoya.

I agree with about half of what u say. First off Ali was a loved figure by the white manwhen he was Cassius Clay, when he turned "black militant" they felt like "their boy" turned his back on them. Boxing is about hitting and not getting hit, but not ducking the most dangerous opponents and then saying "fuck the fans" I'm retiring. Leonard and Whitaker had style but one thing you are forgetting, they NEVER ducked any fighter, Pernell took on the most dangerous fighter of the era - JC Chavez and schooled him, Whitaker wasn't afraid to mix it up with the most dangerous fighters of his era, May has not shown a willingness to do that. Leonard fought that style of fighting very few times that I remember he "ran"(boxed). The rematch against Duran and the fight with Hagler.

Mayweather is not in the category of Pernel and Leonard and if he stay retired he never will be. And what turned off alot of people was the first fight with Castillo(which to most educated fans he lost), I mean when you land 66 power punchs and the other nigga lands close to 300, you lost duke. But he got up in the interview and said he wasn't gonna make excuses and then all he did was make excuses, about his hands and this and that, May already has a losson his record as far as I'm concerned and he always will.

Now as far as Mayweather being a money attraction, he never was and I'll prove it. Up to the point when he fought Gatti(which was "late" in May's career), he had NEVER sold out an arena, that night against Gatti in Gatti's hometown, th arena was sold out, WHY? Because of Gatti. When he fought Oscar, that fight obviously sold out because of Oscar, ANYTHING that dude does sells out, and half of England followed Ricky Hatton here to fill up the arena. By himself Floyd is a boring fighter who never showed that he was willing to take risks. People say "he didn't have the comp to prove himself against, it's not his fault". That's a pure bullshit statement....early on he had guys like Barerra, Hamed, Junior Jones and Morales...at lightweight he never wanted any part of Joel Casamayor, he never intended on fighting Zab until Judah got embarassed by Baldomir, after that he fights Baldomir:(, then Ricky Hatton at welterweight which was anything but a welterweight fight being that Hatton is like a fucking midget and has poor skills, and an old ass Oscar.

What happened to a champ taking on the very best if that is what he wants to be called.....Mosley, Forrest, Cotto, Margarito, Wright.... some of the very best in boxing and Floyd never wanted a part of them. You never eard Pernell say he wouldn't fight this guy or that guy because he might lose, even after Tito floored him and broke his jaw. Sugar fought some of the best of any era and never ducked anybody, he never fought Pryor but there was too much $$$ to be made with bigger and better names, plus Aaron was a smaller man. My opinion on Floyd was that he had some of the greatest skills I've seen, but he was not a great champion, and he was mostly a guy who did enuff to win. I think he's mostly pissed at the fact that Steward and Merchant keep it real about Floyd like I just did. You look at the names he's fought through his career and either Cotto or Oscar would've beaten any of the fighters that Floyd has beaten, so the undefeated record means shit. He didn't like the fact that Larry pointed out on the air how much Floyd did not want to fight Cotto because seemingly he felt like he might lose and he didn't like the fact that Emmanuel Steward asked Max Kellerman "if Floyd beats Hatton and doesn't fight Cotto would u still have him as the p4p?" Kellerman answered yes and Emmanuel said "Well then you can keep Floyd"....and before u comment, ponder this question, how many TRULY great boxing champs have retired undefeated? I'll answer that for you - NONE.
