FLOYD MAYWEATHER: "I REALLY DON'T HAVE NOTHING AGAINST MANNY PACQUIAO...NOBODY REACHED OUT"
By Ben Thompson | January 28, 2011

"I really don't have nothing against Manny Pacquiao. I think the people make it more than what it really is because I think it will be one of the biggest fights in boxing history, absolutely. I think that any fight that I'm involved with will always be a mega-fight. It's just so much behind this fight which will make this fight truly unbelievable as far as numbers and as far as people tuning in to watch the event; it's so huge...you gotta realize this, the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight didn't get made because Manny Pacquiao said he wanted two weeks of non-testing. The last two weeks leading up until the fight, he didn't want to take the tests, so that's why the fight didn't happen. Everything they asked of me, I agreed and what I asked of them, they didn't agree...Al Haymon is my go-to guy. We didn't hear anything from Bob Arum...Nobody has reached out. After the first negotiations didn't come through, nobody reached out to Al," stated undefeated pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather, who returned to FightHype.com to share his thoughts on a number of subjects. You don't want to miss what he had to say about the upcoming clash between Manny Pacquiao and Shane Mosley, whether or not we'll ever see the top fighters in the sport face off, and so much more. Check it out!

BT: There he is, the truth and nothing but the truth, Money Mayweather himself. What's up Floyd?

FM: Just watching basketball.

BT: So catch me up. I know you've been all over the world and back again since last time we talked. What's been going on? How has the New Year started off for you?

FM: Just living life and hangin' out with the family.

BT: I know any time Floyd Mayweather is ready to do an interview, he must have something important to say. So what are we talking about today?

FM: We can talk about whatever you want to talk about; the fight game, life, whatever.

BT: Well, I guess the obvious question is when do you plan on fighting again, but I already know that we never know what the future holds, right?

FM: I don't know when I will fight again, and I don't know what the future holds. I just keep my fingers crossed.

BT: I know you don't know what the future holds, but let me ask you, is there still a passion to fight anymore?

FM: Sometimes yes, sometimes no, but I sit back and think about a lot of different things.

You gotta get to know me before you can judge me. When it's all said and done, only God can judge me. Everyboy has an opinion, male and female. I sit back and I think about certain things that go on in our country. I think about the Michael Vick situation. Not saying it was right, but he did his time in prison for dog fighting and you got people that's out here killing innocent animals every day; innocent rabbits, innocent deer, and innocent birds, but why aren't they in prison . And then you look at the Plaxico Burress situation; he shot himself with his own gun and still went to prison. And then you look at the Ben Roethlisberger situation and you look at the Brett Favre situation and you just put a question mark right there and say this is life. The world loved LeBron James when he was with Cleveland, but once he was free to do what he wanted to do, that's when people turned on him. One of the biggest words in the world is free. He was a free agent; free to go do what he wanted and free to go where he wanted. Sometimes I ask myself, if the owner of the Cleveland Cavaliers was to sell the Cavaliers, do you think he was going to let Lebron James know, "You know, I'm thinking about selling the team, so I'm going to give you stock." Or would he have just sold the team? The world loved LeBron James when he was with the Cleveland Cavaliers. So he decided to go to Miami and I guess now, he only gets love from one city, which is Miami. They give him death threats and say bad things about his family. I thought we all represent the Red, White and the Blue last time I checked.

In 1996, I represented this country in the Olympic games and even though I got cheated and received the Bronze medal, I still stood up there happy to represent my country, the U.S.A. At one particular time, everybody said I was scared of Antonio Margarito. I truly believe what's done in the dark always comes to light. He was fighting fighters and beating them with loaded gloves. I just think that it's right that all fighters should take a test just to show the world our sport is clean. We got some future Hall of Famers that's been known to dibble and dabble in enhancement products; I'm not saying it's steroids, but people seem to forget about Fernando Vargas, Roy Jones, James Toney, and Shane Mosley. Those are just a few fighters, and I truly believe all of them are future Hall of Famers.

BT: And they all got popped after their fights were already over.

FM: I really don't have nothing against Manny Pacquiao. I think the people make it more than what it really is because I think it will be one of the biggest fights in boxing history. I think that any fight that I'm involved in will always be a mega-fight. It's just so much behind this fight which will make this fight truly unbelievable as far as numbers and as far as people tuning in to watch the event; it's a very huge event. I don't think a lot of people really know and understand, I beat Ricky Hatton when he was undefeated. I beat De La Hoya at a weight that De La Hoya was comfortable at. He fought De La Hoya at a catchweight. I mean, how can you be world champion if your fighting guys at catchweights? I mean, to be the official champion at that weight class, or to be known as the man at that weight class, you have to beat the guy at his weight class. All these guys that he's beaten, he's beaten them at catchweights to where the guys are drained once they get inside that squared circle; they're already drained. So I beat Ricky Hatton when he was undefeated. I beat De La Hoya at a weight that De La Hoya was comfortable at. Antonio Margarito got beat by Shane and then he fights Antonio Margarito. I beat Shane, now he wants to fight Shane. Like I said before, the list goes on. Cotto gets beat by Antonio Margarito then he wants to fight Cotto. I wanted to fight Shane when he was undefeated. I didn't just call De La Hoya out, it just took me a long time to get the fight. I was calling De La Hoya out in the 90's, but Bob Arum would never give me the fight.

BT: So you think that Manny Pacquiao's career has benefited from careful matchmaking or fighting guys at the "right time" or the "right weight"?

FM: when he fought Marquez for instance, he had two life and death fights with Marquez. I feel that when you get it done right the first time, there's no need for a second, and I got it done right the first time. I was off for two years and when he fought Marquez, Manny Pacquiao was active when he faced him twice. It's really safe to say that when he fought Oscar De La Hoya, he beat a drained fighter. When he fought Miguel Cotto, it was at a catchweight and Cotto had just come off of two tough, grueling fights. Miguel Cotto had just got beat by Antonio Margarito with some loaded gloves and then he fought a life and death fight with Clottey. Pacquiao-Marquez 2 in '08, he won by split decision and he got praise for winning a split decision. A year later, in '09, I fight Marquez and made it look like I was taking candy from a baby. After the fight, they said I fought a washed up Marquez.

Everybody that's reading this right now, I want them to do their research on these dates. 3/19/05 Erik Morales vs. Manny Pacquiao. 5/8/04 Juan Manuel Marquez vs. Manny Pacquiao. 11/10/01 Agapito Sanchez vs. Manny Pacquiao. 9/17/99 Medgoen Singsurat vs. Manny Pacquiao. 2/9/96 Rustico Torrecampo vs. Manny Pacquiao. I just want people to do their research and go to www.floydmayweather.com and tell me what you think. I beat 15 world champions in 12 years. I left the sport of boxing for 2 years and came back and beat the number 2 guy that they had rated pound-for-pound; I think the number 2 or the number 3 guy that they had rated pound-for-pound. That's what they had him rated. They said me fighting Marquez was not good because he was old, but Marquez wasn't too old to beat Juan Diaz twice, a fighter that's 11 years younger than him, or Rocky Juarez, a fighter that's 7 years younger than he was. And people gotta realize this, Marquez was the only fighter to knock out Casamayor.

BT: You know, the irony is that even though the fight with Shane Mosley is set, Freddie Roach recently said the fight that he preferred was a fight with Juan Manuel Marquez at 147. How is that fight okay for Manny Pacquiao at 147, but Marquez was supposedly too small for you at 147?

FM: Shane knocked out Antonio Margarito at the age of 37, right? They say that's the best he ever looked. He lost to me at 38. My performance was so dominating, they tried to say Shane Mosley was over the hill. Most people should be talking about how Floyd Mayweather is a great undefeated future Hall of Famer that's his own promoter and that works extremely hard to get to where he's at. Instead, all you hear is hate and jealous remarks from critics who criticize me and, you know, most of the time, the people that criticize me can't do what I can do. I take my hat off to Muhammad Ali. When Muhammad Ali was at the top, everyone hated him. Now that he can barely walk, he can barely talk, the world praises and loves him and I never want to be in that position. That's why I tell every fighter it's only correct that every fighter should take the tests, the random urine and the random blood tests. What's so crazy is when you give interviews to reporters that don't really care too much for you, basically what they're going to do is write what they want to write and discredit you. They're going to write and say what they want to say, no matter what you tell them. It's like this, when I said what I said on UStream, they said I was racist, but the next day when I apologized, they didn't put that on every network and in every newspaper.

Before I fight an opponent, they build them up. They say that this is going to be Floyd Mayweather's toughest fight and possibly his first loss. As soon as I beat them and make them look like an ordinary club fighter, that's when they say, "this guy is washed up, he's too old, he's too slow," and then they discredit me saying I'm not a great fighter. Manny Pacquiao got Fighter of the Decade, with one loss and two draws, and that was from 2000 to 2010. I was 19-0 from 2000-2010.

The Mayweather-Pacquiao fight didn't get made because Manny Pacquiao said he wanted two weeks of non-testing. The last two weeks leading up until the fight, he didn't want to take the tests, so that's why the fight didn't happen. Everything they asked of me, I agreed and what I asked of them, they didn't agree. When Manny gave blood before the first Morales fight, he lost. He didn't give blood for the next two fights and he knocked Morales out with ease. A lot of times, people don't realize, giving blood doesn't make you weak. Not being able to juice because you have to give blood makes you weak. That's what a lot of people don't realize and don't know.

BT: Do you think that they picked Shane Mosley on purpose because they're hoping to outshine your performance against him?

FM: I don't think Shane really has too much left at 39. I take my hat off to Shane for being a tough competitor; he's a future Hall of Famer, but I think he was in a grueling fight with me. It was a very tough fight for him. From the outside looking in, people didnt realize how tough of a fight it was with me, but it was a tough fight for him. I think that was his last hurrah.

BT: He definitely looked like he was in survival mode.

FM: Absolutely.

BT: Immediately after the Pacquiao-Margarito fight, Bob Arum swore up and down that a fight with you was their first priority and the fight that they wanted to make. Did you ever hear from Bob Arum? Did you, Al Haymon, or anyone from your side ever get contacted from anyone from their side?

FM: Al Haymon is my go-to guy. We didn't hear anything from Bob Arum. What people must understand, there's no stopping me, Al Haymon, and HBO together.

BT: Well Bob made it sound like he didn't know if he should be contacting Al or Don King.

FM: I think Don King is a great guy. We talk frequently, but Don understands that I'm my own boss, and I'm free to talk to whoever I want to talk to. So if Don King wants to be involved, is it possible? Absolutely it's possible. We can never say what is or what is not possible. Don King has never disrespected me, always treated me with the utmost respect, always treated me like a gentleman, and always talked to me in a respectful manner. For the fighters that worked with Don King in the past that talk bad about Don because their paperwork wasn't together or they didn't have an Al Haymon in their life or in their corner, that's their problem. The best move that Floyd Mayweather has ever made in his boxing career was joining forces with Al Haymon.

BT: Now Shane just joined forces with your old boy, J. Prince.

FM: Shane is entitled to do whatever he wanna do. I just tell any fighter that's reading this interview right now, or any entertainer, when it comes to business, there's nobody better than Al Haymon, he's the best hands down. I think that right after the '96 Olympic games, I should've been with Al Haymon.

BT: Uh oh. Al was slippin' on you (laughing).

FM: Al never slips. Al is my best friend.

BT: So as far as the fight is concerned though, the man to contact is Al Haymon, right? Bob Arum is just blowin' smoke; he knows who to call, right?

FM: Nobody has reached out. After the first negotiations didn't come through, nobody reached out to Al.

Manny Pacquico has the worst contract in sports history. He's signed to two different companies, Top Rank Promotions and Golden Boy Promotions. 27 or 30 percent is divided between Top Rank and Golden Boy. I'm not sure what he pays his management team, but Freddie Roach is getting 15 or 20 percent, so that's over 40 percent of his money gone right there.

When it's all said and done, I got to be doing something right because still nobody does numbers like Floyd Mayweather. The proof is in the pudding. You go look at Manny Pacquiao's numbers with Marquez; in two fights, I've done more numbers than what they've done in two fights. Look at the De La Hoya fight. I did one million more homes than what they did.

BT: Well you know they're going to try to beat the numbers that you did with Shane. You know that Manny jumped ship from HBO and is doing the pay-per-view on Showtime with CBS marketing the fight, right?

FM: All I have to say is that I'm loyal to HBO. I can't believe Bob Arum and Manny Pacquiao's camp would cut HBO out.

BT: So what do you think about Shane's chances? I guess you kind of already said you don't think he's got much left.

FM: Shane is a great guy and I wish him nothing but the best in his fight. He's an American, so do I want to see him win? Absolutely. But we can never say what's going to happen in the heat of battle.

BT: Okay, just so everyone is absolutely, positively, crystal clear, as far as your fights are concerned, you're still standing firm on your stance that random is random, meaning Olympic-style drug testing leading all the way up until any fight.

FM: Yes, absolutely!

BT: And thus far, to your knowledge, Manny Pacquiao has never agreed to take basically the same tests that Shane took.

FM: No, he didn't. Like I said before in the beginning when we talked, two weeks prior to the fight, he didn't want to take no tests.

BT: So his reluctance to take these tests are basically the only thing that have prevented and are still preventing this fight from happening?

FM: Absolutely.

BT: Do you think Bob Arum really wants to make the fight between you and Manny?

FM: You gotta realize, Manny's not making the money he should be making. He's making a lot, but he's not seeing a lot. I'm making it and I'm seeing it. Without boxing in 2011, Floyd Mayweather is still going to see over $30 million just from businesses outside the ring.

BT: Wow. That's crazy. I gotta step my website game up (laughing).

FM: Oh, you'll be okay. I'm just really truly blessed. What else can I say?.

BT: Well let me let you get out of here Champ. Before you go, let me get a couple of picks from you. Who you got in the Super Bowl?

FM: Green Bay. I like Green Bay.

BT: What? I don't think so. You ain't feelin' Pittsburgh?

FM: I like Green Bay.

BT: What about Devon Alexander and Tim Bradley? You were at Devon Alexander's last fight, right?

FM: I like him as a person. I don't really know Timothy Bradley, but he seems like a pretty cool guy.

Floyd is telling the truth about that pac shit. PAC has never agreed to FULL blood testing. The key word is FULL!

Over/under on how many pages this will be

I'm going with no less than 4 as many as 7.

Very interesting interview. Very non-committal about fighting in 2011 but he should be with his court case(s) pending.

I missed that HBO won't be broadcasting the Pacquiao-Mosley fight. WTF? Nobody hypes fights like HBO and Showtime doesn't have the audience share of HBO.
But I did notice he said Pac was still signed to Golden Boy so anyone thinking Oscar doesn't want Mayweather/Pacquiao to fight is insane. Shit, thinking Oscar wouldn't want him to fight JMM would be insane. Those are the two most marketable fights for Manny.

Niggas will sleep on this and in this same thread they will say Floyd ducked Pac and throw in Margarito for the fuck of it.

So

When Floyd said "we haven't talked about fighting Pacquiao" before was he specifically saying he, Ellerbe, and Haymon? Then it could be true that Golden Boy and Top Rank were negotiating but not Floyd and his people.

If you put the two most marketable in the ring then there is nothing else for people to watch. To watch them as they beat other people up before they meet is good for maximizing profits.

That's why Arum has been putting Manny in with soft touches since Cotto. Can't have him lose before the big payday.

Bob Arum talked all the bullshit, the Mayweathers stuck to the contract and kept quiet..Now we know the truth... Bravo Floyd.
