Cartoon Network released a press release today from their Upfront presentation announcing new series as well as returning ones. DC fans have a new Batman animated series to look forward to called "Beware the Batman" as well as the return of both Young Justice and Green Lantern. Star Wars fans can look forward to the return of Clone Wars for another season as well. One show that seemed to be missing however was ThunderCats. The fact that the show was not listed does not bode well for it's future. We have requested official confirmation if the series has in fact been canceled or not and as soon as we get that word we will be sure to pass it on to you. For now though check out the press release with descriptions of all the new and returning shows we know about.

At Anime Matsuri, Matthew Mercer, the voice of Tygra on the new Thundercats cartoon, held a panel. In it he candidly discussed where the series stands and how it's doing. Here are some bullet points from the panel, courtesy of LioConvoy at the Thundercats Lair Forums:

• Cartoon Network is supposedly skeptical about doing Season 2
• Season 2 (second 26 episodes) have been ordered, but not yet produced
• Toys were not selling well to kids
• Thundercats moved to Saturdays to draw more kids in to buy the toys and watch the show
• Cartoon ratings have at least doubled since move to Saturday mornings
• He said watching it legally, and buying the merchandise is best way to support the franchise

Couldn't get into the new Thundercats, preferred the old series

^^^^ Yeah, I can't quite explain it, but something just seemed to be missing from the new shows that made me like the old shows. I just wasn't feeling this one! :smh::smh::smh:

Slow story and lackluster writing. Thundercats wasn't exciting like the originals. It was pretty much boring.

I can explain it, you're not 10 anymore. This is a much better written show that builds up to the climax of last week.

I'm shocked they even had toys but it never came across to me like a kid's cartoon. I would think the fact that ratings doubled with the move would be more important than whether you can sell toys to the network.

Bandai is likely underwriting a lot of the show since it is also shown in Japan. Obviously, if they aren't making their money back they aren't going to want to fund their portion of the costs.

That has nothing to do with it. The Justice League (and now Young Justice) were always able to deliver compelling story along with my mind-boggling action all within single episodes. Thundercats, drags along with some episodes just being plain boring or uninteresting.

The shows execution is terrible IMO. I had high hopes for Thundercats especially because one of the writers was black.

^^^Thanx, you beat me to it!

And you're right, because I damn sure like Justice League and Young Justice! This new Thundercats drag in some places which makes me lose interest.

I still like the original though!

If you say so, I disagree.

It's not a superhero-all action cartoon so if that's what you want, then this isn't the show for you. This has the best character development of any cartoon on right now and that definitely includes "Young Justice" which has glaring plot holes that still haven't been filled.

I have the entire run of the original on dvd and it's still fun for a daily afterschool cartoon but if it was released now, it would get lost in the mix with "Ben 10" and other cartoons like that. It's fun but not deep.

never did really feel the new series , but how many times do they plan on doing a new Batman series ??

^this.

The show was really trying hard to leave the usual animation script set-up behind, longer story arcs and a lot of introspection...

the writing in my opinion was very different and innovative..

and incorporating the other series like Silverhawks...

because essentially the Thundercats were considered oppressors and not well liked by the rest of the planet...

they touched on racism and elitism...

the whole adopted Tigra hating Lion-o and the being tossed aside, the mother dying, betrayal, slavery, questions of loyalty,...

I really think they took a lot of chances (not all good!) but very interesting...

Never even saw the toys in the store quite honestly, but DVR was set every week...:D

Everything you're saying is all well and good, but it doesn't stop the show from being boring. You can tell all of that story and still hive high points in the show. And trust me I'm one for non conventional storytelling but in the case of this show? Snore fest. I like the overall idea of the show, them being on their planet with separate animal kingdoms, but overall when I watch the show I feel like I wasted 22 minutes.

I don't have a problem with it not being a superhero action fest. I want the deep, rich story telling, along with the action that the first series brought.

You guys act like it's impossible to do both.

good points...

dont think i'm calling this a work of art or flawless...

by no means!!!

It has MANY areas of improvement and took a awhile to really find its footing and at times tied TOO hard to retell previous stories...

but especially with the finale...

I think I see what they want to establish...

and they really need to create a stronger rogues gallery...

bu I really dont want a villain of the week, heroes get trapped, escape, big fight scene cartoon...

People forgot it took young justice awhile to get away from the clone, whiny sidekick thing to the SERIES it has become...

I was disappointed with the lack of action...

the most iconic story arc of Thundercats is when Lion-o goes to the trials and has to face each Thundercat individually with no weapons...

and Mum-Ra!

for like 5 episodes

NOTHING they did this season touches that...

that is epic storytelling animation and action...

I think even He-Man had a similar arc once...

They needed that...something visceral (the finale twist was EXCELLENT, but...)

something to make kids want to run outside and copy the moves...

this series was VERY dark, which is good but needed a better balance.

But anytime a cartoon can lead to actual adult discussion...

they doing SOMETHING right!!!:D

I have watched the first run very recently and there is nothing deep about that show. It's well written for it's time and timeslot but it's not deep.

That was the highlight of a great show and that's something the original had as an advantage: it was a daily show and not a weekly one. That allowed it to weave a singular story from beginning to end tightly while a weekly show has to fill time and episodes from week to week.
I'm not saying there weren't eps that ran long at times but some of the best ones were ones without a big fantastic battle because it fleshed out the characters in a way the original never did.

AGREED.

true.

especially Tigra's story...

but I feel like Panthro should have been more of a Father figure...

and there really isnt a character children can look through the eyes of..
that hurts a lot because that is a disconnect with the audience...

creating the boredom or slowness.

I loved Tigra's and the Kittens' stories.

I don't think they really had a good feel for Panthro but the story with the Dogs helped. He's the quintessential old warrior and that part does come across.

there will be a new Avengers cartoon but more like the movies and the new spiderman cartoon

The new TCs sucked balls. I tried. I made it to the little people that live a day episode.

Until people stop watching them. You don't take a ho off the streets as long as she's making money.

I wasnt saying it like they should just stop making them, but why not just keep The Brave and The Bold ? Why do a whole new series ? I hope this Batman is more like the one of the 90's cause this previous one just didn't sit right with me, you had episodes where Batman was fighting crime in the daytime, once at a museum...when have you ever seen this in a BM cartoon ?
