Feds seize kickasstorrents domains, arrest owner

The major thing I loved about KAT then the others is when they find fake torrents, it gets pulled pretty quick. Many other sites aren't so quick to do the same. Along with the ratings, you can see what others state about the quality of the vid and audio.

But it is what it is... Sad day

Demonoid used to be my fav back in the days. But that one sorta died after other sites started getting shut down. I dont use torrent sites like I used to. I usually just google stuff, then go to blogs/forums and download from regular storage sites. If I want faster speeds from those sites, I can easily go to sites like these, leechpro.com/ (<--i got a long list of sites like this) and easily get premium speeds. You try to block my country...I'll just use a VPN or something. My point? Technology has created a lot of routes.

Also, a lot of those other torrent sites used trackers from Kickass. And like you mentioned....those other sites allow feds to set traps. When I see some shit like 80,000 seeders and 50,000 leachers....Im like :hmm:

bottom line is they allowed the sharing to get too out of hand, not its uncontrollable. And the only way they can control it is by going at the ISP. But if they do that, the ISP will lose millions.

Yeah I'm on Demonoid, but only go there as the last resort as I am looking for something really old.

But Obama killing it...those cacs mad!! Folks marching for years to get pigs arrested here, but the US got time for all this fuckery. Government sure does have people trained right. :smh:

People will still protest today. No convictions will result. But damn if the government can't reach across borders to put in work.

the people will never get the results they want when it comes to police savagery because that call comes from the top...

its set up that way, the govt knows it...

you want to stop police brutality, you have to march in front of the homes of the richest family in that state.. they are the ones pulling the strings..

I will say it again and again and again and again...

too much energy wasted on the tail of the snake..

the energy needs to be focused on the head if yoiu really want to stop the snake....

anything else is just going in circles.......

Feds Seize KickassTorrents Domains, Arrest Owner

Breaking

The U.S. Government has arrested the alleged owner of KickassTorrents, the world's largest torrent site. The 30-year-old Ukrainian was arrested in Poland today and is charged with criminal copyright infringement and money laundering. In addition, a federal court in Chicago has ordered the seizure of several KAT domain names.

With millions of unique visitors per day KickassTorrents (KAT) has become the most-used torrent site on the Internet, beating even The Pirate Bay.

Today, however, the site has run into a significant roadblock after U.S. authorities announced the arrest of the site’s alleged owner.

The 30-year-old Artem Vaulin, from Ukraine, was arrested today in Poland from where the United States has requested his extradition.

In a criminal complaint filed in U.S. District Court in Chicago, the owner is charged with conspiracy to commit criminal copyright infringement, conspiracy to commit money laundering, and two counts of criminal copyright infringement.

The complaint further reveals that the feds posed as an advertiser, which revealed a bank account associated with the site.

It also shows that Apple handed over personal details of Vaulin after the investigator cross-referenced an IP-address used for an iTunes transaction with an IP-address that was used to login to KAT’s Facebook account.

“Records provided by Apple showed that [email protected] conducted an iTunes transaction using IP Address 109.86.226.203 on or about July 31, 2015. The same IP Address was used on the same day to login into the KAT Facebook,” the complaint reads.

In addition to the arrest in Poland, the court also granted the seizure of a bank account associated with KickassTorrents, as well as several of the site’s domain names.

Commenting on the announcement, Assistant Attorney General Caldwell said that KickassTorrents helped to distribute over $1 billion in pirated files.

“Vaulin is charged with running today’s most visited illegal file-sharing website, responsible for unlawfully distributing well over $1 billion of copyrighted materials.”

“In an effort to evade law enforcement, Vaulin allegedly relied on servers located in countries around the world and moved his domains due to repeated seizures and civil lawsuits. His arrest in Poland, however, demonstrates again that cybercriminals can run, but they cannot hide from justice.”

KAT’s .com and .tv domains are expected to be seized soon by Verisign. For the main Kat.cr domain and several others, seizure warrants will be sent to the respective authorities under the MLAT treaty.

At the time of writing the main domain name Kat.cr has trouble loading, but various proxies still appear to work. KAT’s status page doesn’t list any issues, but we assume that this will be updated shortly.

TorrentFreak has reached out to the KAT team for a comment on the news and what it means for the site’s future, but we have yet to hear back.

Breaking story, in-depth updates will follow.

7. EZTV.AG
TV-torrent distribution group EZTV shut down earlier this year after a hostile takeover. The site continued to operate under new ownership and releases its own torrents now. In solidarity with the original owners several large torrent sites have banned these ‘new’ releases from their sites.

The U.S. Department of Justice has seized seven domain names associated with Kickass Torrents — purportedly the most-visited piracy site in the world — and charged the man they allege is its owner and operator with criminal copyright infringement and and money laundering.

Federal authorities said Artem Valuin, 30, of Kharkiv, Ukraine, was arrested Wednesday in Poland and that the U.S. will seek to extradite him to the States. Valuin allegedly owns and operates Kickass Torrents, which since launching in 2008 has let users illegally download movies, TV shows, video games, music and other media collectively worth an estimated $1 billion.

Kickass Torrents has consistently listed movies still in theaters that can be downloaded using file-sharing apps, according to the charges. Recent titles include “Captain America: Civil War,” “Now You See Me 2,” “Independence Day: Resurgence,” and “Finding Dory,” officials said.

“Copyright infringement exacts a large toll, a very human one, on the artists and businesses whose livelihood hinges on their creative inventions,” Zachary T. Fardon, U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois in Chicago, said in a statement. “Vaulin allegedly used the Internet to cause enormous harm to those artists.”

Law-enforcement officials across the globe have battled pirate sites for years, but the task of shutting down such illegal operations remains challenging as pirates routinely switch up domain names and use anonymizing services that mask their identities and locations. In one of the most notorious cases, the FBI in 2012 shut down Megaupload.com, which allegedly caused more than $500 million in damages to copyright holders — while legally embattled founder Kim Dotcom has claimed he’s going to relaunch the site next January. Meanwhile, the Pirate Bay, despite several raids and arrests of its organizers over the years, remains up and running today.

Kickass Torrents receives more than 50 million unique monthly visitors, according to officials. The U.S. government’s complaint charges Vaulin with one count of conspiracy to commit criminal copyright infringement, one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering and two counts of criminal copyright infringement. The copyright-infringement charges carry a maximum sentence of five years in prison, and the money-laundering charge is punishable by up to 20 years.

“This criminal case is a major step to reduce illegal theft of creative content by large-scale piracy sites,” MPAA chairman and CEO Chris Dodd said in a statement. “Actions like these help protect the livelihoods of the 1.9 million hard-working Americans whose jobs are supported by the motion picture and television industry – and a legal market that generates $16.3 billion in exports for the U.S. economy.”

In addition to the charges, a federal court in Chicago ordered the seizure of seven domain names associated with Kickass Torrents, which operates servers around the world including in Chicago: kickasstorrents.com, kat.ph, kickass.to, kastatic.com, kickass.so, thekat.tv and kat.cr.

According the DOJ complaint, Kickass Torrents’ net worth is estimated at more than $54 million, with estimated annual advertising revenue of between $12.5 million and $22.3 million. Kickass Torrents, also known as KAT, has moved its domain several times due to prior seizures and copyright lawsuits, and it has been ordered blocked by courts in the U.K., Ireland, Italy, Denmark, Belgium and Malaysia.

The KAT investigation was conducted by the DOJ in partnership with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations division and the Internal Revenue Service’s Criminal Investigation division. Officials said they also received substantial assistance in the matter from the International Organized Crime Intelligence and Operations Center, the National Intellectual Property Rights Coordination Center, the DOJ Criminal Division’s Office of International Affairs, and the Polish Border Guard and National Public Prosecutor’s Office.

man..let me fire up my VPN...i keep forgetting to use it...lol

these fuckers getting serious...

One goes down and another will take its place. I remember when Pirate Bay went offline and the I was mad that i had to settle with using Kickass. And then Kickass was the shit. They will win the war in drugs before they win the war on file sharing.

But like most wars, there is money in it. Also, the invasion of privacy. A win/win.

It's funny because they basically have fucked up the PC game sharing with Denuvo. Sooner or later, they will blame VPNs for human trafficking, drug trade, and terrorism so they can ban them. :smh:

FUCK! NOW what am I gonna do to get perfectly rip 1080p and 4k content :crymeariver:

HDtorrents + VPN + Seedbox = privacy.

HD torrents doesn't let everybody in and as long as you treat it like FightClub or BGOL you should be safe - your bandwidth and hard drive space better be on point, those boys don't compress shit for quality's sake.

Chess not checkers. Your government at work. Working for all of America. Arresting Ukrainians in Poland to bring them to court in the U.S. But those redneck cacs mad. :hmm:

Seriously, how is an owner of a torrent site a target of the U.S. government. The country has these resources to arrest Ukrainians in Poland, but can't handle pigs in the states. All the sneaky shit they been passing for the MPAA and RIAA, but no progress on police brutality(folks make money of body cams).

This is sickening. :puke:

So much wasteful spending that could be redirected to ending REAL domestic injustice. :smh:
