Police: Pennsylvania Teen Fatally Shot After Snowball Fight

PHILADELPHIA — A teenager was fatally shot by a neighbor who became enraged after he was hit by a snowball, police said.

Teven Rutledge was having a snowball fight with a friend on Sunday, his 16th birthday, in the city's Feltonville neighborhood. They hit a neighbor, who came back with a gun and shot the boy in the head, according to police.

Rutledge was taken to Temple University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead around 11:30 a.m. Monday, according to police.

It was unclear if Rutledge meant to hit the man. After the neighbor was hit with the snowball, police said, he exchanged words with the teen before going home and getting the gun. He then returned and shot the boy before fleeing.

"It's horrendous to shoot somebody over a snowball," Chief Inspector Keith Sadler said at a news conference.

Investigators on Monday were still looking for the neighbor, whose name was not released.

The shooter was probably some little ass punk...or outnumbered...you gotta be pretty heated to go home get a gun and come back and shoot a nigga over a snowball...

A fuckin snowball. There is one reason I am against guns and that is because it gives people a false sense of empowerment. What kind of person would kill someone over getting hit with a snowball whether it is intentional or not. That dude needs to be put under the jail.

Real talk!!!!!!!!!! I just tried to stop some similar shit.......... No shooting, but two fights!! We were playing tackle football in over a foot of snow......... It's hard enuff to go thru.... some of the sideliners (subs, kids, chicks) were throwin snowballs at ee'erbody..........Some players got mad......... But, one took it to the next level... He didn't even get hit by one, but he wanted to assert his voice to tell one dude (same age), "IF YOU THROW ANOTHER ONE, WE GON' FIGHT!!"
They end up squarin off twice..... 'Cause the dude playin in the game stopped all action to fight...!! Then it got calmed..... But, dude on the side wasn't backin down from being talked-to fucked up, or being stepped-to; So, he kept throwing snowballs (but, not at the same dude) 'Ole boy who wanted to fight came over again...... But I squashed that shit!!! It wasn't nothing to ruin a good football game over!!!!! Damn shame!!!!!!

Families shudder at 2 youths' murders

IT WAS A MOTHER'S worst nightmare.
Mirta Rodriguez looked out the window of her second-floor North Philadelphia apartment a little after noon Saturday and saw her 16-year-old son, Mark Anthony Rivera, sprawled on the sidewalk, riddled with bullets.

He had dared to diss another youth, cops and witnesses said - a youth with a gun.

Meanwhile, in Feltonville, family and friends of Teven Rutledge, who was shot to death on his 15th birthday Sunday by a man who had been hit by a snowball at D and Rockland streets, were trying to understand how such a terrible thing could have happened.

Police yesterday were looking for suspects in both cases.

The senselessness of the snowball killing enraged Mayor Nutter. He called it the "dumbest-ass event of the year."

"And unfortunately we've seen these events in the past," he said. He said he and Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey were going to "continue going after illegal guns and be tough on crime.

"We will be relentless."

His vow comes too late for Teven Rutledge, the victim of the snowball slaying, who was removed from life support and pronounced dead yesterday in Temple University Hospital, and for Mark Rivera, who reportedly died because he had refused to buy marijuana from another boy.

Police issued a warrant for the arrest of David Ramirez, 17, of 8th Street near Tioga, in Rivera's killing. No suspect has been named in Rutledge's killing.

At a news conference yesterday, Chief Inspector Keith Sadler said investigators were hoping that people in the neighborhoods will give police information about the snowball killing.

"In a case like this, certainly we don't need any reluctance," he said. "We have a few leads and we have more people to talk to."

Police and witnesses said Teven Rutledge and friends were throwing snowballs at each other at D and Rockland streets when a man in his 30s was hit. The man warned the kids that he was going home to get his gun and they better not be there when he returned.

Rutledge apparently ignored warnings from his friends and was sitting on the front steps of a house he was visiting when the man came up with the gun at about 4:45 p.m.

Witnesses said Rutledge had told the man that he wasn't going to fight him and that if he was going to shoot him, shoot. The man shot him in the head and fled.

When the life support was removed yesterday, the hospital was crowded with friends, family, school officials and teachers.

Later, friends, neighbors and relatives held a late-afternoon candlelight vigil at D and Rockland. They sang "Happy Birthday" and told stories about the dead boy.

Rutledge's parents, Keith and Alisha Rutledge-Wilson, lamented their son's death. "Why he dead? Why he dead?" his father kept repeating.

"When we're by ourselves, we're going to fall into little pieces," he said. "I raised him. He came a long way. He just turned into a little man."

Travis Davis, 13, said, "He was my best friend. I would never think he would have died on his birthday. We were always together."

They shared classes at Community Council, an alternative school for students with emotional challenges.

Travis' mother, who didn't want her name used, said of Rutledge: "That boy wouldn't hurt nobody. After his birthday, he said he was going to stay off the streets and not get into any trouble."

She said he was like a second son to her.

A neighbor, Anna Marie Fox, said that since the killing, she lives in fear.

"I feel sad, disgusted and scared," she said. "Before this happened, I felt safe. I would go out on my porch at 2 o'clock in the morning to have a smoke. Now I have changed the bulb on my porch to make it brighter."

In the North Philadelphia case, the mother of Mark Rivera said that when she heard shots outside her apartment Saturday, she ran to the window.

Mirta Rodriquez said she recognized her son's body by the clothing, "a black hoodie, dark blue Rocawear jeans and Adidas.

"I bought those clothes for him," she said.

Rodriguez said that her son had gone across the street to a bodega to buy a Pepsi. She said witnesses told her that the 17-year-old gunman asked her son, "Do you want weed?"

Her son replied, " 'I don't want that s---,' " she said. As he started to walk away, the other youth shot him multiple times in the head and chest.

"It's the image that torments me," the mother said. "I want to get it out of my head."

"I lost my son," she continued. "That little boy was my world. Sometimes it's not good to love your kid so much. He was my world."

She said he liked to play basketball in Hunting Park, watch comedy shows and listen to rap music.

She held her hand over her heart. "This right here," she said, "I don't know if it will be normal again. The day he died, I died." *

A young man who had been shot in the head over a snowball fight yesterday -- on his 16th birthday -- died this morning.

Tavin Rutledge had been at Temple University Hospital on life support. He was pronounced dead at 11:34 a.m.

The shooting was one of three this weekend, two of them fatal, as the city's murder rate climbed to 43.

Homicide Lt. Mel Williams said the victim and a friend were having a snowball fight in their Feltonville neighborhood when they accidentally hit the alleged shooter, who became enraged, went home, returned with a gun and shot the teen.

However, one of the teens involved gave a different account.

Travis Davis, 13, said he and Tavin were throwing snowballs at each other on D Street near Rockland when they hit a passer-by.

A man Travis said he knows only as Omar, in his early 30s, witnessed the incident and chastised the teens for throwing snowballs at the man.

The boys sassed him and Omar told the boys, "I'm going home to get my gun and you better not be here when I come back."

Travis said through sobs that he warned Tavin, who was visiting for the day, that he knew Omar and had seen his gun. He told Tavin to get out of sight.

Tavin went into a friend's house, where other teens urged him to stay indoors.

Instead, he went outside and sat on the steps. Omar came back with a gun about 4:45 p.m. and found Tavin, witnesses said.

"I'm not going to fight you," Tavin told the man, witnesses said. "If you want to shoot me, shoot me."

The man fired one shot that hit Tavin in the head, then he jogged toward Eleanor Street, about a block away.

Witnesses said young occupants of the house rushed out and tried to stop the bleeding with towels.

"Breathe," they urged Tavin. "Try to breathe."

"I'm trying," he managed to say before lapsing into unconsciousness.

A police officer rushed the boy to the hospital.

After the shooting, police went to Omar's house on Eleanor Street near D and called through a bullhorn for him to give himself up.

After about a half-hour, the cops entered the house and discovered that Omar was not there.

"He was a quiet kid who never gave trouble," said Luis Payano, owner of a corner store, near D and Rockland streets. "He always bought a cheesesteak and soda."

In the other shootings, one man was shot to death and another wounded shortly before 7 last night on 31st Street near Berks, North Philadelphia.

The unidentified victims were taken to Temple University where one was pronounced dead, and the other admitted in stable condition.

An unidentified 16-year-old boy died Saturday afternoon when he was shot multiple times in the face and body shortly after noon. He was pronounced dead at Temple University Hospital about 20 minutes later. Police issued a warrant for a suspect, who was not immediately identified.*
