Journey To The Centre Of The Earth:
written by the photographer: The way down this 340 feet main shaft is to be lowered down via a winch chair.. At first the darkness hides the bulk of this vast cavern but as eyes slowly become accustomed it is possible to pick out a gentle arc of rock curving upwards to form a vaulted roof . Nearby, two columns of water crash to the floor; fragmented to a myriad of droplets they whip the air into violent winds. What you see here is the bottom half of the cavern which is around 150ft in height & is it is said to be able to swallow St Paul’s Cathedral, London. The remaining 190feet is the narrow shaft high above which when being lowered down through the cascading waterfall you are so close to the rocks you can touch them. Difficult conditions to shoot down here, low light, water spray & the added problem of pot holers moving around whilst i took the long exposure shot creating light trails from their helmets. Well done to my brave 10 yr old son Luke for not just going down…..but to actually go down first ! A full round trip amounting to 12 hours ! ( inc 3 hours in the cavern)
