Ever Wear Shirt and Slacks For Same Respect As Whites in Jeans??

I noticed when I go to the bank or out and about on the weekend I dont get the same respect as white folks if I'm dressed in casual clothes. When I enter a store I getted ignored or in some cases avoided. I thought it was maybe because of they way I might have been dressed. I usually rock a baseball cap, neat jeans (never baggy) and sneakers. But then I'll see the same sales associates (black and white) greeting white customers and making pleasant eye contact regardless of they way they may be dressed

Oh forget it if I have to go the bank. I already know to look basically like I'm a day trader for a fortune 500. And I'm talking about regular transactions. I was in Cingular today and I was the only customer in for a few minutes. The honey that was there looked up at me and put her head back down. It wasnt until I said to my friend "she must think I'm here for date" that she asked if I needed help. A white guy came in the store dressed casual and she asked me to hold on to see if he needed help

This latin girl pointed this out to me one day. She said its messed up that black people have to dress up to get any respect. I never forgot that. Shit reminded me of how we dressed up and "acted right" back in the early 1900s

Its a range from customer service with no smiles, no courtesy to being ignored until you leave the store. Its weird.

I'm gonna start checking for that but I don't see much of that in places in Atlanta but I know of some places where your theory might be true. My somewhat similar situation: I left working with the government last year to work for an online company that was 95% white. I was dressed to a T everyday, heck it was an office. After being there for a week, one of the owners pulled me aside and asked me to dress down because some of my co-workers were feeling uncomfortable. It was then that I noticed whitey was wearing flip flops and torn jeans to work. Unrelatedly, their company is now out of business.

A few months ago a new club opened in St Maarten. They made a big deal about the dress code; no sneakers, no hats, etc. So then when we go we see eurotrash whiteboys going in with dirty wrinkled t shirts shorts and flip flops. WTF???!!!

Here in NYC If I am dressed really nice in nice shoes and a nice dress or skirt and makeup I can get a cab. If I am dressed in jeans I never can get a cab. I see them pick up crusty white people in those stupid croaker shoes and the shorts looking unshaven and unkempt all day.

yeah I'm in philly but If I go to a store with my short sleeves which show my tats I get the worst service.

u know all i rock is t-shirts and jeans/jean shorts
with
flip flops
for exactly that reason
and
i dare a bitch not to give me the proper service/respect

well at my job there is no dress code for real, just don't wear anything offensive. So, I wear flip flops and t-shirts and shorts just about everyday. The only time I wore slacks and a shirt w/tie the first day, and when I saw the vets wearing comfy clothes I joined in too, fuck it.

I already know how you feel. I wear my beard, preferably rough and thick. :D
In stores, I'm always avoided, part in parcel I'm 6'5", 285lbs, bearded, etc.

a girl at work, Black I might add said in a meeting once after I remarked on something, "Wow, I've never heard you talk!" the folks that know me just laughed. Respect my mind, not my appearance b/c it really shows how superficial people are

Yeah I agree. I guess the point is racism is still alive and running well even within our own people...

 yes!! is it that hard to believe? in evry situation ive always out dressed my white counterparts because of that phenomenom. whites themselves know that they can go to work in some ugly ass old navy cargos and sketchers while i have to look like bentley farnworth to get any respect...you are living in la la land :smh:

Its the opposite for me. I always get friendly service. Yes discrimintation can happen, but I believe in thinking positive and putting that best foot forward. The one thing that I find funny is that whenever I'm in any store or place of business people always ask me for help. I don't know if I have a friendly face or if its the solid shirts I wear mostly. I know when I go clothes shopping the snow bunnies be real happy to help me. Even carry my shit to the dressing room.

Those people who only look at folk that dress a certain way have a stigma place in their minds from jump street. Again, stop playing the fucking race card. It doesn't matter what your ethnicity is bruh. If I don't like something about you, that's that. You of course are gonna assume the worse, which is the wrong fucking approach. Yes, dressing certain way does get you labeled. Opinions may vary. Remember this.

here in baltimore we have a club called the IGUANA CANTINA. it's a mixed club all types black white asian latin ect go to this place. now they dont advertise on the black radio station 92q and when you go they say no hat which is acceptable and no baggy jeans which is also acceptable because its there rules. but those rules are geared toward the black people that come to the club. i've benn and seen them let white boys in with clothes that dont fit the dress code and i've seen them not let black men in who fit the dress code. another thing they do is lets say 3 black guys come together they will say one of the black guys clothes dont fit the wardrobe criteria.

THATS SOME B.S.!!!!

well all around the world, black skin puts you at the bottom of the ladder. that's why you hear things like "black people have to work twice as hard to get half as far". that's why we have to stop depending on others for our success and happiness. and raise our children to have pride and confidence, then it won't matter what the next race does to try and bring us down

I used to work retail, at times when i aproach black people to offer them help, they think im only doing it because i think they are here to steal. On the other hand i hate sales associates over bugging me for help. The bottom line is whites are associated with having more spending power than blacks, and will get better treatment at any place of business, even from blacks.

I can agree with this without deviating from my own assumption in which mickey was trying to infer. To some degree, it is in fact about race. But dressing a certain way does not give you points. Case and point.

You walk into my store, well dressed, well groomed, but you just happen to be black. I don't like black folk. I am a proprietor who is in the business of making money. If my hate towards your kind is so strong that I don't mind losing business, then yes. You will be treated unfairly. Doesn't matter if you are P.Diddy.

Now, let's take a Arab in place of the black counterpart. I don't have an issue with these people. So dressed in the standard Muslim garb, he inquires about my wares. Do I throw him out because of the way he is dressed? Nope. I don't have a disdain for Arabs.

This is not about you fabregas I just hate that black people are so quick to play the fucking race card. But common sense will tell you that it does not matter what you do, if a person does not like you, that's that. Mickey is trying stir up some white VS black bullshit, when he knows that it's not even popping like that.

Some of these people need a dose of reality man. White people being treated with more respect because of the way they are dressed is preposterous.

It's funny that you should say that seeing as how I've experienced this too.

Back in January I went on a business trip with 4 white guys to Miami to a job location that was 99.9% black.

The first week we all dressed the same but seeing as how I was the youngest and most active I was able to pull off the attire a lot better than my fatter counter parts.

But who was the person to get harrassed for five days straight by the companies security? Me, the young black male with a button up and slacks carring bags full of equipment AND the person that was in charge of the group.

They received better treatment at first because of how they looked and the fact that they were white.

I used to trip people rocking white boy clothes with braids, white folks would never know how to react to me

I gotta say you are right about this.

I see the same thing, be the person white or black. I see this at retail stores, company security, grocery etc...

But, one thing I started to do especially with customer service reps, is I approach, especially if they are like me (Black) and ask WTF you seen me here and why didn't you come over and help me, making them feel like the Niggas that they are (Difference between Black People and Niggas). I personally aint got time for that shit, so after I tell 'em about them selves I walk the fuck out!

Image is everything. If a cat walks into a store wearing Timbs, baggy jeans hanging off his ass, white tee, and a doo-rag the only people paying attention to him is store security. He is perceived to to have little or no money, more likely to steal something than buy it. Store owners would prefer people dressed like that never enter their stores. That applies to white and black but moreso with blacks.

         bump..! I say more now then ever, its like most everything else... its underground and embeded in "this" society....! They expect us Negros to be      I say fuck that, and fuck them...!!

I really think this has less to do with race, than it does with "class" perception.

But I feel society has a "clothes hierachy" in general. You can go to ANY Black church and see this on a weekly basis.

I've seen White folks put down and not get ANY service often when I'm out and about. And that's due to some of them being dressed all funky and shit (that WACK Alternative/Emo look). It always made me snicker when I got service over some of these folks because of the way I was dressed (casual slacks/jeans. long sleeves, nice shoes, etc).

I used to even have a complex about retail folks always asking me if I need help. "WHAT? I'M HERE TO FUCKIN' STEAL???
Then I decided to stop being sensitive about it.

When my wife asked me to catch a cab to meet her in Midtown (me running late), I was about to curse her out for suggesting it. But guess what pulls up, when I'm here about to argue with her on my cell?

OMG,I thought I was imagining things.I went down to Fells Point, and they did the same thing.they told me I needed to tuck my shirt in, and when I did, they still refused to let me in.I even offered to take it off.Needless to say it was the same shirt they let me in with last week.Is it really racial profiling ,or maybe they are trying to balance out the crowd?Either way it ain't cool.

I don't know bout most of yall, but rockin slacks and a button up pulls 3x more hoes than played out thug look, and like the original poster said, gets more respect and feels good on the body. Im startin to see young cats catchin on tho, once its on a larger sale look out.
