I think they've often had a woman in that position as the host. They had Beadle and Sage Steele before Maria. That's one reason I don't fuck with ESPN's studio, they don't have who's the best for the job or who's the most entertaining.

So this younger chick comes with less experience than you, who gets more visibility and soon...a bigger pay check.
ESPN handled this shit poorly, from the not taking Maria's feelings seriously and then going back on what they said by having live sideline reporters. I rarely have ESPN's coverage with the sound on, but I had assumed that it was the way it was because of Covid.

Maria isnt remotely worth anywhere near $8 million.. No one turns on ESPN for her or looking for her. Using SAS as a comp is a colossal failure. As you said, hes plastered all over the network, is an actual draw, and has shows built around him. He sets the payscale. A 29 year old with no TV following, and no drawing power asking for anything in his neighborhood during a time of cable cutting and layoffs is horrible optics. Now if she walks, nobody who actually watches ESPN (black or white) will blame the network for letting he go with those hilarious demands. Her turning down $5million was a major fuck up.

Tony Romo is a good commentator. He was an underachieving (or overachieving depending on your viewpoint) quarterback in the league. If he gets 17.5 mill she should get at least 12-15. If I were SAS I would demand nothing less than 20 mill a year, no way in FUCK if I were him I’d have Romo making more than me
