Elijah Holyfield disappoints with one of NFL combine's slowest 40 times for RBs

There are significant stakes for most of the participants at this week’s NFL scouting combine.

For Elijah Holyfield, the former Georgia running back and son of boxing great Evander Holyfield, stakes are higher than most.

Holyfield left Georgia after his 2018 junior season that saw him tally 1,018 rushing yards and seven touchdowns on 6.4 yards per carry.

Was Holyfield ready to make the leap?
With questions about his breakaway speed and limited exposure after sitting behind Sony Michel and Nick Chubb his freshman and sophomore seasons, some questioned if he was ready to make the jump to the NFL.

But many scouts liked his potential and saw this week as a chance for Holyfield to prove he’s a talent worthy of selecting as high as the NFL draft’s second round.

He had his chance to quell concerns at the combine’s 40-yard dash on Friday. He did just the opposite.

Holyfield’s 40 time stuns
His 40 times were among the slowest in the running back field.

On his first of two runs, Holyfield clocked in at 4.78 seconds. His second attempt was an even slower 4.81 seconds.

The NFL lists his unofficial time as a slightly better 4.76 seconds. But that’s of no solace as it puts him as the second slowest running back of the session out of 23 who participated.

In short, it was disastrous. Holyfield is not considered a speed back, but he’s not a goal-line bruiser either.

The scouting report on Holyfield has him pegged as a bowling ball, a strong back tacklers won’t relish tackling in the open field. But if he can’t get into the open field, then that becomes moot, of course.

On the plus side for Holyfield, he did put his strength on display. His 26 reps on the bench press were the third-most among running backs.

What went wrong?
Holyfield’s performance Friday wasn’t typical of what he displayed on the field at Georgia. His form looked stiff, and it’s possible the pressure and the rigors of the combine played an impact on his performance.

Whatever the case, his showing in the 40 will not help his draft cause.

I really don't understand why people put so much stock in a draft. Teams have needs. If you're the best man to fill that need you get the job. Just like any other company. who cares when you got picked? Hell, who cares if you got picked at all?

Slave market shit.

I dream of the day A/A players bring the whole system down. Them boys at Missouri showed their power.

Let MAGA nation watch their players as scabs and see if it's the same product.

MAGAs would love all white league where they can laud the benefits of slowness and toughness and no more showboating, sort of like all sports pre 1950s. Make Ameria White Again is for everything - Actually Make America White Male Again -

Maybe E Holyfield was nervous or ate a hamburger the night before the 40 times!! Im sure one team will pick him up!!

The players' pockets care...

Baker Mayfield went #1 and got $32M fully guaranteed. Lamar Jackson was the last pick in round 1 and got $9M guaranteed. A 3rd rounder could get cut and only walk away with $800k

The combine doesn't mean shit. I watch game tape. If he does it on the field and can be coached anytime would be happy to pick em.

Holyfield wasn't expected to run that fast of a time so it shouldn't be as big of a deal. Besides I'm not sure how big of an indicator a 40 time is anyway. Last year Nick Chubb ran a faster 40 than Sony Michel. Michel was considered the speed back of the 2 at Georgia going into the combine and he was still drafted before Chubb.

You have the number one pick in the draft and you're in dire need of a safety, the best safety in the draft is expected to go in the 2nd round if you use that pick to choose that 2nd round safety you'll be out of a job.

Dude didnt have speed in the game, he was a bruiser for UGA.

Slave market shit.

Do you feel the same way about all sports leagues and professional jobs that require a physical (fireman, police, military)?

I feel the same about every industry we are in.

I live in Georgia. I have to deal with whites who still believe our contribution to America consists of sports and entertainment. If we boycotted our industries, let's say we all took vacation for Black History Month and used that time toward our own causes. You don't think that would be a powerful statement of our value?

Emmitt Smith played behind one of the best offensive line ever. Who's to say what he would have done with another team. :dunno:

but as far as the combine and what it means

Kevin White plays for my team.
