A jury on Thursday convicted Dylann Roof of slaughtering nine black members of a Charleston, South Carolina, church.

He was convicted of 33 federal charges, from hate crimes to the obstruction of the practice of religion.

Roof, 22, walked into the historic Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church, commonly referred to as “Mother Emanuel,” in June 2015 during Bible study. He sat with congregation members before taking out a gun and starting his massacre.

The 12 jurors deliberated for less than two hours after six days of testimony. Seventeen of his federal charges carry the death penalty.

After his arrest, Roof spoke with FBI agents for two hours, during which time he said, “I am guilty. We all know I’m guilty.”

The tape, which was played for jurors, showed Roof telling the agents he committed the acts because he believed black men were raping white women “daily” and that white people had become second-class citizens.

South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley on Thursday expressed her condolences to the families who lost loved ones in the shooting.

Roof plans to represent himself during the sentencing phase of his trial. Jurors will reconvene on Jan. 3 to decide whether Roof will be put to death or imprisoned for life.

This is a developing story and will be updated.

I want him to life in prison without parole.
He will be getting abused from day one until he dies.
I want his ass to be tortured over and over and over again everyday.
When he wakes up, I want them to say "You ready for the shit today motherfucker" and go to work fucking him up.

CHARLESTON, S.C. — Dylann S. Roof, a self-radicalized young white supremacist who killed nine black parishioners last year when he opened fire during a long-planned assault on Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church, was found guilty by a federal jury here on Thursday.

The jury convicted Mr. Roof of nine counts of hate crimes resulting in death, three counts of hate crimes involving an attempt to kill (there were three survivors), nine counts of obstructing the exercise of religion resulting in death, three counts of that charge with an attempt to kill, and nine counts of using a firearm to commit murder during a crime of violence.

Mr. Roof, 22, stood, his hands at his side and his face emotionless, as a clerk read the verdict aloud in court. Two deputy United States marshals stood behind Mr. Roof, whose lawyers also stood nearby.

He will face the same jurors next month when they gather on Jan. 3 to begin a second and more suspenseful phase of his trial to decide whether he will be sentenced to death or life in prison without parole.

As the first verdicts were read, a few women in the courtroom nodded with satisfaction. But as the clerk read the counts, a process that took about 12 minutes, the women eventually drew still. After the court adjourned, the two adult survivors of the attack, Felicia Sanders and Polly Sheppard, shared a long embrace.

Reaction was swift. “It is my hope that the survivors, the families and the people of South Carolina can find some peace in the fact that justice has been served,” Gov. Nikki R. Haley of South Carolina said in a statement.

The jury reached its verdict hours after hearing closing arguments in the case. The outcome seemed a foregone conclusion from the first minutes of the trial, which began on Dec. 7 and included a swift acknowledgment from the chief defense lawyer, David I. Bruck, that Mr. Roof was responsible for the “astonishing, horrible attack” on June 17, 2015.

Indeed, Mr. Roof had chillingly confessed to investigators nearly 18 months earlier and revealed his purpose in a blatantly racist manifesto that he published online. His choice of targets seemed intensely premeditated — he scouted the church half a dozen times — although he also researched other black churches and a festival elsewhere in South Carolina before settling on Charleston because, he wrote, it is the “most historic city in my state.”

In his closing statement to the jury that lasted 53 minutes, Assistant United States Attorney Nathan S. Williams, depicted Mr. Roof as “a man of hatred, a man who’s proven to be a coward and a man of immense racial ignorance.” Repeatedly using the word “hatred” to connect Mr. Roof to the hate-crime counts, Mr. Williams said the defendant had “executed them because he believes that they are nothing more than animals.”

The prosecutor’s voice often rose in outrage, and the jurors were again shown photographs of the carnage Mr. Roof left behind. “He must be held accountable for each and every action he took in that church,” Mr. Williams urged.

As he has throughout the trial, Mr. Bruck responded by planting suggestions that Mr. Roof was mentally unstable, and thus not fully accountable. He peppered his closing statement with words like “abnormal,” “irrationality,” “senselessness,” “illogical,” “obsessive,” “delusional,” and “suicidal.” Mr. Roof told the F.B.I. in a confession shortly after being arrested that he had saved ammunition to kill himself if, as he expected, he confronted the police when he left the church.

I honestly would trade this conviction for last week's mistrial.

Glad he was found guilty, but I'd rather have seen a cop be brought to justice than some piece of Shit kid

What did you just say?

Dude gunned down NINE black people for NO REASON, and you rather trade his conviction for a mistrial because the other killer was a COP?

You must've been one of the No Limit Sport's agents that negotiated Ricky Williams contract.

I'm not saying I'd rather trade 9 lives for 1.

I'm saying it's more important to find a killer cop guilty than it is a killer kid guilty

:smh:

Man your post puts things in perspective.

A sad truth about our "justice" system.

He could have just waited until he became a cop and gotten away with it or even something much worse.

Bruh, I know its easy to be cynical, but I don't even think a cop can walk into a church filled with black people and gun down nine of 'em and get off.

Some shit is so heinous the most CAC's just throw up their hands on some, 'We can't help you with this one" shit.

they interviewed the bruh and he did seem kind of weird...

not coonish weird, just confused weird...

I'm sure he wasn't too weird to know that going on some anti-black tirade wasn't going to help him or Dylan.

But, its all conjecture.

I just don't see extremely racist white folks befriending black people who don't acquiesce to the "authority of whiteness".

I know that the case as they get older, like college days and up....

but when you are a teen ager you really still tryin to find out who you are.....

like those two lil cac beckys who used to sing racist songs...

now that they in their twenties they are not bout that life at all....

Didnt he say he did it? WHY THE FUCK ARE THEY EVEN HAVING A TRIAL? Just set up a committee to review the case in a day to decide wether he should be handed the death penalty or not and call it a day. i for one dont believe in the death penalty (here i go contradicting myself again) BUT if anyone deserves it, it would be him.

He gonna get 21 days and get time served for all the mental hardship he has endured during this ordeal he had to go thru.
