Dream to Reality: Legality, Web Presence, Profitability 2

Fam,

I've tried to hit a few of you up on something interesting I'm going to develop. But, some of you are not accessible through private channels mostly because your inbox(Kayanation :hmm:) is full.

Essentially, without giving too much (:D) I want to develop a website (Version 1.0) and eventually and app that takes existing "scattered" statistical information that you would normally have to comb through manually and make it streamlined at my website and spits out the relevant data based on the users profile.

This statistical information is compiled yearly by a few institution and is given for free by anyone that wishes to download it, review it and act accordingly based on it.

Question for my BGOL Legal, Computer Website/Application developers and Financial team.

BGOL Legal

Can anyone see any possible legal ramification if I develop a website that does all this automatically and presents the customized results to the users of my website?

BGOL Website/App Developers

I don't have the skill-set or time to possibly develop something like this on my own so I've been considering outsourcing the work. Has anyone used a service like freelancer.com or something similar? What's the best way to get the work done and protect your idea.

BGOL Finance

What's the best way to make money from a service like this? Free to everyone, but sell ad-space(Similar to FB model if I have it correct.) Basic fee and increasing fee for more premium features etc? I have no doubt in my mind that folks would be willing to pay for this. If it existed I definitely would have paid the money for such a service.

Thanks,

I'm lost, what statistical info are you going out for free?

Thanks for the response! Call me paranoid but I'm not willing to divulge exactly what it is for obvious reasons.

But the idea is simple enough. Lets say BGOL publishes a statistical booklet every year indicating all sorts of stuff related to its business and members. How old they are? What part of the country they're from? What's their internet habit(Porn, Chat, etc etc) for FREE.

Pretty much I want to take that published booklet and make a separate website that takes all that information and streamlines it for a user.

Instead of manually going through the booklet. My website would "automatically" present the relevant data to you based on your profile. Secondly, It would make suggestions based on the relevant data to you. For example: Do this to become a better member!

Hopefully that helps and sorry for my reluctance to give specifics.

So something like what Quantcast, Compete or Alexa already does?

Then you're essentially competing with those types of sites? No?

I have never heard of those sites until today.:D
What they provide from what I can tell is kinda of the idea. However, What I have in mind is much more specific and tailored .

So the short answer is "NO" I wouldn't be competing with them at all. For my industry nothing like it exist or rather if it does it's badly advertised and used.

If it did exist I would have heard of it considering all the research and contacts I've built throughout the years within the industry.

So doesn't sound like you're looking for advice, you already made up your mind. So good luck

I'm pretty sure I asked for advice regarding the possibility of a law suit by using Free information made by someone else and using it as the "key" data source for my service. Additionally, I asked if anyone had experience with outsourcing website work and finally, I asked about various pricing/subscription based options etc for this kinda service.

So I'm not sure what you meant by my mind being made up? If things checkout (Legality issues, Profitability etc) then yes in that case my mind is definitely made up and I'm going to create the service.

As long as it's generic info and not specific to saying 'X' came to the site on X amount of days and what not, then it should be fine.

And I missed the part about using someone else's data.

Appreciate it thanks..

Tical, about to run out for a few to buy some stuff.

You are onto some shit Bro.

Some short answer in the meantime:

1. Yes you and digitize that info. Also can work to get the data from sources over time. There are a lot of precedence for this e.g. airbnb scrapped and spammed craigslist to build traction, their valuation today is the result.

2. I use odesk.com for basic web scraping of data from other sources. it's a good use of small $ to time ratio

3. I can walk you thru some revenue models when I get back.

Good to see brothers getting in the game.

You don't even have to know how to program, jut how to get your shit done
