I’m 2 years 9 months in to having my Locs and need some tips on maintenance/upkeep.
What are some of your routines knowledge and advice?

Currently I’m dealing with Dry Scalp and build up from working out 4 times a week.

Welcome to the club family. Had my locs for 24 years

Extremely important to oil treatment your scalp AND locs so they wont break/pop in the future.
Once completing a deep wash, allow your scalp to breath then moisturize them w/ oil treatment.
Avoid tugging, pulling or even tight hairstyles to prevent breakage (depending on the thickness of your locs).

OR just get a professional to twish yuh locs. What state you're in? If NYC, I have two professional recommendations

I’m 22 years in after cutting them off and starting over. I definitely just go to a professional, it’s too much to do on my own since my hair is under my back pocket

Welcome to the loc family too brother. The journey is certainly real. You right, just going to a professional is better however, the in between times as your roots are getting loose and frizzy & heading back to your professional for your next appt, my recommendation is to moisturize your scalp to avoid future issues i.e. breaking locs, itchy scalp, etc.

I use the products in the ig link I posted to keep my hair moisturized. I have psoriasis so I don’t have a choice

Great thread, was gonna start or bump one of these..

October will be 6yrs for me…

Sunday was my first time, doing a so called deep cleaning…(hot water, lemon juice, baking soda) what was recommended…

was over due

probably wasn’t the best cleaning, I just used the sink…. But was better than nothing.

likely will buy a inflatable sink…

I’m 16 years in and agree with what everyone else said! Wasn’t until a couple months ago someone said I need to start misting and oiling the actual loc and not just the scalp. Had some that have broken off. Also, stay away from gels on the loc. too much and it’ll have that build-up in your loc.

Also heard that the longer they are, you wanna wear them up some way? Anybody else heard this?

Peace and love on your loc journey my guy!

That pain you feel the first time you sit on them and go to reach for something will make you never want to let your locs hang

I should have hit you up fam.

I had so much hair during the quarantine

But it kept breaking and knotting up and I just had to cut it all off

Of course now I see my hair thinning at the crown

I think I missed my shot.

I'm 20+ years in.
Best advice is be consistent, cover your hair when you sleep or do anything that will leave lint, grass, or dust in your hair. Keep your scalp clean and moisturized, use thin & natural stuff, nothing gunky.

I'm just on my 2nd wash with this, it smells good.

Because you workout I would recommend this after each workout.

Spray as much on as you like. It'll keep your scalp as clean as it can and smelling good while working out.

You can also use this, it'll come in either bottle to moisturize your scalp.

Now if you have a consistently dry and flaking scalp, wash your hair with regular shampoo to cleanse your scalp and then a stronger medicated shampoo lik

Now if your scalp continues to itch, flake and eventually gets scabs on it. You have a infection\fungus and you'll need to go to the dermatologist.

They'll give you a shampoo and an oil that'll be a lifesaver and you'l be able to use it once your scalp starts itching again.

The scalp condition is common with locs and braids because we're unable to wash our hair as much so bacteria can build up.

Good luck on your journey!

I definitely just go to a professional

Go to a loctician my friend.
I haven't been to a salon in years, I have them come to my house. I'm not sitting around no cackling hens for 3 hrs.

Apple Cider vinegar wash

Thank me later
Found out about ACV washing last year via youtube rabbit hole & bought that inflatable.

A lot came out. I still wanna do it again.
