Dr. Boyce: Jay-Z, Harry Belafonte is a MAN – Don’t You Ever Call Him a “Boy”

because u never know how some words are gonna impact a person.

people have said shit to me where i may have even responded with a fuckoff but the words sunk in over time...

he lashed out the only way he knows how... w/ the i got more money than u, bla bla bla but its very possible that the words hit the target.
Yea, you havent been paying attention.

That man is not about to fuck up his money train. He isn't built like that.

Jay doesn't even make a majority of his money from the music anymore though. He probably would have very little material change in his earning if he never released another album.

I hear what you are saying... he's all about the paper...but at this point... he's chasing "records" more than money from music.

so every wealthy black person with clout is supposed to mention trayvon?

why do you say he has broke men doing whatever. these men have brains. why cant they think for themselves?

She's been in a few movies as well. I wouldnt call that one dimensional. And not all of them involved her singing and dancing.

I think black people of power should use their influence to progress our race. Every other race does it, why cant we. It would've been nice for him to mention Trayvon because this was a world known case.

Its all of our responsibility to do something for each other.

We are all influence by things and people. Its human nature.

Have you listened to Beyonce's interviews? She doesnt think for herself. All she can do is sing and pop her coochie.

This guy did a rap diss to Harry Belafonte man. To address any 86 year old black man like that- not to mention one who stood on the frontlines for racial equality- is a fucking outrage.

Diss songs to civil rights freedom fighter Harry Belafonte. Idol worship and titular homages to homosexual fashionista Tom Ford. Incredible.

civil rights leader told jay-z that a white rock and roll legend was more of a black man than he is.

yea im glad the old guard is taking jay to task. but there's a way to address people fam.

thats like a old man in a wheel chair punchin u hard in the nuts and then when u knock his teeth out everybody is like

:smh: cmon fam u know that was a old man in a wheelchair. u aint have to do that.

I just watched and interview he did the other day in Europe. It was posted on bgol. I think he gives good interviews...I find it funny how different he comes off though dependent on the interviewer...when he was on The Breakfast Club, he was very sure of himself (i won't call him arrogant because I kind of hate when people say that about black men when it's just confident) ...but on the one in England with the white interview, he actually gave an interview with more substance and came off more humble.... i thought it was kind of odd...I know that you have to know your audience and know how to play in different circles....he's mastered that... sometimes I have do it (obviously nothing on the level we are talking about with him) but he's come off as trying to make sure everyone knows (on the the breakfast club shit) that "im better than yall".... but for the interview in England, the interview even commented how he was surprised that Jayz showed up EARLY and his temperament was really chilled.

I think it had a lot to do with the questions asked. One show focused on the industry gossip and bullshit surrounding Jay-Z's life past and present and the reaction to the album.
The other interview basically focused on the actual album and the music, the process of the album and making of music in general.
And it was conducted in a studio never the less probably the place Jay (rapper/artist) is most comfortable.

ok, but everytime a tragedy involving a black person happens, black celebrities and other black people of power should mention it? So should they also mention the black kids that have been killed by other black kids? Or should they only mention the instances where its not our own race causing the problem?

so y worry about something u cant control (like jay-z) when u can be doing something right now?

the chick that stopped the juror from putting out a book to capitalize on TM's murder was just a regular 20somthing black chick
kinda like u pretend to be...
she's not a celeb. not super rich. just a regular person who decided to take some action.

Because you're being confrontational and I'm trying not to be, I wont address you anymore.

Thank You and have a Blessed day.

Ok seen but the youths WILL idolize and try to imitate celebrities even just to be cool in school or whatever. A person with any type of conscience would realize how much power they have over the minds of the youth and use it responsibly. Unfortunatey hova is not one of them :smh:

Just had this conversation with someone. People won't agree. Let it go.

This was a major case. He shouldve said something. Any man that can have a rap album next to the Actual Magna Carta has some influence. We make him rich, he needs to have our backs.

I have all the respect for him and his hustle but as a Man-I don't.

I know it's new york radio... the breakfast club at that...so it's gonna be a certain way anyway.... That very well could have been the reason why....two interviews is not a large enough base to say it is a pattern.

But thats what parents are for.

You cant hold a man responsible for the actions of what other people do. These kids have parent(s). The parent should be responsible for making sure that what their child sees on tv is not how they should portray themselves.

So who is responsible for these little hoodrats making twerk videos, and growning up to be strippers and video models. Is that some rappers fault as well?

Uh oh, Jay-Z done became too successful. Now he must save the black race or risk being outcasted as a coon. Its a thin line....

I don't think he's looking for Jay Z, et al. to save the black race, I think he's comparing today's influential entertainers and athletes to his contemporaries, and sadly he can't because, it's a totally different mindset brought on by totally different illusions, or delusions, about how much racism still exists. Michael Jordan caught the same flack. When you look at what people like him, Kitt, Brown, Robeson, Ali, etc. risked, he's merely asking do they have the same fight within them to risk a little for a lot.

Thank You and have a Blessed day.

Not a confrontation... just a simple question.

What indication do any of us have that jay-z is a potential civil rights hero in the making? He's not.

He's a rapper and a rapper who happens to be very much all about his money. This is not the guy who u should be waiting on.

. Michael Jordan caught the same flack.

I can't even knock them. I respect them for what they've achieved. If they don't want to do or be anything else, they've earned the right not to do anything else. It's just that considering where they both came from, you would think they would be more willing to use their bridge to help more cross.... beyond just being an "inspiration".

I can dig his music and can also appeciate the sometimes subtle lyricism that can go over people's heads.... but for the most part, Jay just rehashes the same shit over and over again. He's a better business man than he is an artist. We know you've made paper Jay...how about really talking about some shit that matters.

Im done with you. You tried me with that passive aggressive shit in a very informative adult thread.

I'm not allowing you to pull me in with negativity anymore and Im not giving you the opportunity to flip what YOU started around back at me.

Like I said, HAVE A BLESSED DAY.

Actually what he said was Springsteen was more socially conscious and he was right. And your wheelchair analogy is patently ridiculous on so many levels. Most notably it presumes that Jay-Z responded to Belafontes criticism in similar but more effective fashion. He didnt. He responded to a criticism with a cheap weak rap lyric that only served to further make the original point of Belafonte more valid.

thats a cop out. school me if im missing something critical...
No, the cop out was you statement which sugested that maybe Jay-Z would suddenly "get it" in his mid 40's despite the near two decades worth of evidence to the contrary (including his latest effort from a week ago).

jay z this jay z that

the man everyone loves to hate
Hater this hater that. You sound like a bitch. Expand your vocabulary and grow up Jimmy. That or either just listen when the grown ups are talking.

This is an excellent doc on Belafonte. I learned a lot about the man...

If its true Jay-Z took a shot at him in a rap song, thats foul as fuck. IMO, Jay-Z has always gotten a pass on the lack of soul and constant excess in his raps because of his location. He's from Brooklyn, New York. If he were from Atlanta, LA, Texas, anywhere but NY, "mecca of hip hop" the purists would've got at him a loooooooooooooong time ago. Ive seen hip hop dudes trash cats like Cash Money, Nelly, etc, then turn around and big up Jay or be hesitant to criticize him the same way. Being from New York and the self proclaimed "King Of New York" has shielded him from a lot of that. I have no problem with a guy like Belafonte asking more of him as far as content goes. To whom much is given, much is expected. His music has always been self absorbed so its nothing new, but as he has become more mainstream and has a bigger voice, its gotten more attention.

What indication do any of us have that jay-z is a potential civil rights hero in the making? He's not.
.

I'm certainly not expecting that from him. However, Jay Z has a voice that reaches the world. He's also a clever lyricist when he wants to be. It would just be cool if he used it for more than just talking about how much wealth he has amassed. I know I'm generalizing and his sprinkles in several other topics sparringly but for the most part, that what he does. Dude is like Tyler Perry regurgitating the same shit over and over again. His music business acumen is pretty incredible. He actually wildly overshadows his wife in that regard...but I listened to Magna Carta Holy Grail like damn man... you still ain't got shit else to talk about? He's like Beyonce in that they construct music strictly from a sales perspective. I respect their hustle but their primary and most important goal is always moving units. It's nothing inherently wrong with that either but it's getting mad boring and they both are essentially wasting their talent UNLESS all they care about is money. If that's the case, they are doing an excellent job.

Nigga you're telling me to grow up

When this dumb ass argument / debate on what another man should or should not be doing with his influence is on a porn board...

Right.

You fucks can get this shit to 20 pages and nothing will be resolved. Jay doesn't give a fuck about our opinions or thoughts. So all this is just for co-signage and for cats to feel empowered speaking on issues they themselves cannot change.

If you cats are so passionate about the movement, trying to move the race in the right direction. Don't look at Jay Z...

Get off your ass and actually contribute something other than useless key strokes on a message board & insulting others who don't agree with you.

Now go suck a dick & swallow

Jay is no different than Tyler Perry, Steve Harvey, or Beyonce...

They all have their niche and cater to it...It's rare they deviate from the formula in which has made them successful. Just look at Beyonce...She's a "Musical Icon" but doesn't make iconic music.

That's why nas is a better artist in my opinon because he continues to show growth and pushes the envelope to challenge himself.

Its a message board you greasy headed fool. The very existence is very debate, discussion and an exchange of ideas and opinions. Because you dont agree with the ones being expressed for or against Jay-Z doesnt give you license to come in every thread of that nature like an offended bitch. And you are a got dam joke talking about insulting others you dont agree with...You dont see anyone attacking you for your constant idle threats and lovers quarrels with BDR. And thats as "usless" as "keystrokes" get you hypocrite.

And kill that other bullshit you talking, as if you know who is and who isnt doing what in the community. Ive worked with kids and juvenile offenders and was doing so when you was still moping up piss in the Clippers locker room. Stop making assumptions.

It's good business as long as it works. And it's working for them. I'm not knocking their hustle at all man. They're doing great things in the business world... it's just like....:smh: I listened to the Magna Carta Holy Grail and I wanted to like it (and I do like a few songs) but it literally is just the same on shit.

I agree 100 percent about the beyond shit... he's an icon...and it actually extremely talented and probably a top 3 performer (live)...but she makes no iconic music....it's really pretty damn crazy that someone so successful and who has sold so many albums doesn't have any real iconic music. Jay Z actually does have a lot of great singles (most of it much older shit) but Beyonce :smh::smh:

would just be nice to get "more" from them...but I guess that's why we have other artists who do produce great music and social commentary..maybe it's asking too much from those two

dont forget she cant dance or act for shit.

Cool story bro

Fact of the matter is you talking about the next man isn't going to change a got damn thing. Only you can change situations you see problems with. Stop feeling like these celebs owe you or us ANYTHING.

Jay's been in the lime light since 96...17 years.

He's always been about the paper. So why the fuck are you niggas acting brand new like you haven't known his motto all this time.

You work with kids but your a major fuck up

lol go sniff some glue my dude

dont forget she cant dance or act for shit.

She can dance. She's not ciara but she can dance. But she can also do something better than ANY other female artist right now. She can both sing and dance simultaneously. The girl is talented. Her and Usher are uniquely talented in that respect. But her voice holds up even better while singing that Usher's does. Her music is just extremely banal.

all i know is. when its time for someone to supposedly speak out and be most influential and has the most power and should stand up and be an activist for black people jay-z is the only named mentioned.

when you try and say some shit about how talented, how much of a good businessman how much of all of the things i mentioned above.. then jay-z suddenly isn't shit from the same folks demanding he say something.

amazing how that works out.

She talented but she's not great at anythng. Good but not great. She's probably the best in my generation but I agree that she hasn't put out any classics.

Jay is an easy target for so many.
