This type of movie perpetuates the stereotype that most brothas are in the closet. Just another way to throw some hate the Black Man's way.

Stereotype?? It's just a part of reality that actually doesn't get enough play.

I'll bet you have no complaints about the "big dick" heterosexual stereotype, which is far more pervasive and dangerous.

I don't think that movie is saying "most" brothers are gay. The DL brother is an issue in some communities. I say the more awareness to the issue, the better.

Like I said in the other thread, making movies about all this down low stuff is creating unneeded hysteria, Everybody liked Brokeback Mountain and it either did or almost won a whole lot of awards, But you make Jack and Ennis two black men and everything goes the opposite direction. The black male's masculinity is fragile and forms of media like this doesn't help.

Nobody is an expert on the "DL" and nobody never will, because between men who are actually closeted gays with no attraction women, and closeted bi's who have attraction to men and women and men with no swagger who need some place to stick it, there are a million reasons why a man would want to have sex with another man. But these points get lost, Because when it comes to gay men, people get stupid, people start checking for small attributes that will all of a sudden give clues to gayness, but all they end up doing is judging people and pigeon holing black men, dude might be a Bohemian or an Emo but because he doesn't want to be blacklisted as a potential assumed homosexual he just falls in line with the status quo.

If people want to explore black gay men, then watch Noah's Arc, at least the characters are out gay men. DL movies do not educate, they create hysteria.

Well if black men weren't doing it, nobody would have to make a movie about it. And especially a lot in black churches, but that's another thread

well

hmmmm

this topic is kind of iffy but..i feel ppl underplay the role of out gay, bisexual, dl and men who have sexual encounters.(yeah according to the ppl involved there is a difference). its a bigger role in the black community than we think.

i went to a college conference about the state of black men in america and when they talked about black male sexuality and sexual health and brought up homosexuality the crowd's demeanor changed...it's pretty sad. :hmm:

i feel movies should be made about it b/c of how homophobic the black community is as a whole

they are:
quick 2 call someone gay
quick to say no homo (i HATE that bull)
can't talk about it in some churches
its a social taboo

let's be real..it happens!

its happens in ppls homes, churches, jobs, jails, clubs, right next door, right under your nose so ppl need to stop frontin.

i feel if ppl were to talk about it more, then it would become less of a taboo and maybe the ppl involved would practice MORE safer sex habits. (notice i said MORE)

We should then follow it up with a movie about Black women who suck and fuck anything with a dick and spread STD's through the community. I guarantee you that's a higher percentage of the Black community than DL brothers since we're on the betterment of the community tip.

We can talk about it more, but people's attitudes towards it need to change and people need to stop using it as a scapegoat as it homosexuality single handledly brought HIV and AIDS to the Black community.

If you have a 19 year old girl that has had sex with 37 people and is found to be HIV positive who do you blame that DL dude she fucked after the party or her own sexual irresponsibility.

this topic is kind of iffy but..i feel ppl underplay the role of out gay, bisexual, dl and men who have sexual encounters.(yeah according to the ppl involved there is a difference). its a bigger role in the white community than we think.

i went to a college conference about the state of white men in america and when they talked about white male sexuality and sexual health and brought up homosexuality the crowd's demeanor changed...it's pretty sad. :hmm:

i feel movies should be made about it b/c of how homophobic the white community is as a whole

they are:
quick 2 call someone gay
quick to say no homo (i HATE that bull)

It ain't just a black thing. It's the same in White communities too. It's worse. They will protest homos funerals just to call them a faggot as they are laid into the Earth. They actively create policy to exclude queers, so don't tell me homophobia is some big problem in the Black community unlike in any other.

Just like this DL thing. Like a bunch of brothers are all fucking each other undercover. The Black community has the same amount of DL's as every other racial community, but for some reason it's a phenomenon in ours.

Emasculinization, people, it's systematic emasculinization of the Black male. You every notice that in the movies it's always the brother who is college-educated, ambitious, successful who turns out to be on the DL?? Well, we couldn't trap him with jail or drugs or violence, nigga went to college, shit, let's say he's gay. :smh: SMMFH

Good Post Deuce. I'm also against the hysteria- do we need to have an honest dialogue in our community about these issues yes...but one has to talk about personal responsibility as well.

I agree 100% Honest Dialog is needed, but also on the other side of the fence Out black gay men, or closeted black gay men (who don't sleep with women) need to open up dialog about the subject also. I remember (kinda digging myself a grave here) in Noah's Arc one character saying to another "These straight but curious boys come with way too much emotional baggage, you need to resist temptation" another time "How do you know he's not gonna go back to breast feeding next week" and again "I'm not entirely sure he wont go back to girls".

All of those lines stuck out to me, because it almost seems as if this "DL" thing can be almost eliminated if gay men stopped chasing them and having secretive relationships with them. On the hetero side, women chase and fuck thugs and other worthless fools and create messed situations for themselves and others involved., on the gay side, gay guys chase DL dudes create messed situations for themselves and other's involved.

A lot of stuff can be avoided if people took responsibility. The word responsibility cancels out the need for a DL discussion IMO.

oh i completely agree about the whole scapegoating thing...that's bull. there are movies about chics who sleep w/ massive amounts of ppl, engage in unhealthy sexual behaviors and so on.

i never mentioned anything about it being any better or any worse in one community over the other. the question was about black homosexuality so that is what i posted about. i've seen movies about men who were gay who were in jail or into drugs (well they did sexual favors for drugs) and with guys who go to college....b/c they are true in some instances.

i think ppl are getting upset over the fact that these incidents get more play and being that the black image is under "attack" anyway, anything that makes them look less than a man isn't welcome especially if it is a person that is considered valuable to the black community (college educated, business types and the like)

i wouldn't say that black men are increasingly on the "dl" is a stereotype. the media hasn't given it enough play yet. however, brothers on the "dl" is an issue. black men feel that they have too much to lose being "openly gay", so they feel that they have no other choice then to hide it. the black community has stigmatized homosexuality so much. is it unfortunate that our black women are the ones who ultimately get hurt? yes! but our men feel as if they have no choice to keep this "bottled" in.

by the way...if terry macmillan took it a step further, that movie would be her life story. lol. when is this movie expected to release. director? producer?

:eek::eek::eek::smh::smh::smh::smh:

When I saw this trailer a few weeks ago, I knew that had to about a DL man! I figured it, because I knew it couldn't have just been him cheating on a woman to make it such a big deal.

I swear some shit like that could make me do what she did. I'm serious. I don't think I will be watching that either. :smh::smh::smh:

IMO DL's need to be shipped off to some place out of mind...

passing on AIDS to women n shit....

I think that men on the DL is a real issue. . . but I don't think the movie in the trailer above could even come close to addressing any real issues. When I watched the trailer and hadn't scrolled down to see anyone else's comments but my take of the trailer was that it was entertainment. . nothing more. I thought the movie might actually be interesting.

I agree with LD that yes this issue does exist in other races . . . but honestly I don't think the black culture is as accepting of homosexuality as for example the white community. Homosexuality is very frowned upon in the black community. Which is probably why the whole "down low" thing even exists.

Its a little late for all of that.... straight men and women have AIDS too.... and its from having sex with each other.... leave the gay guys alone...

BTW I totally didnt get that that was about another man....I saw him holding hands with a woman....

And if Vivica is in it...the movie probably sucks.

I wonder if this was co-wrote by Terry McMillian? If so I'm hoping to see her AIDS test results during the closing credits right after they show the credits for "Gaffer" and "Dolly Grip"
