DOLEMITE IS MY NAME (2019) Starring Eddie Murphy (drops 10/25)(Update Thick Sister Added)(thread)

Very interesting

No it isn't.

If they were able to make that movie without her involvement or approval she obviously isn't an heir to her father's estate when it comes to the Dolemite brand, likeness, material etc. and therefore has no ownership over his likeness, material, etc.

Her struggling on welfare isn't due to this movie being made and is instead the result of poor choices by her and/or her father.

This is just a ploy for sympathy and the only thing missing is a Gloria Alred press conference.

So smarty-pants who is the heir to his estate??

I knew something like that was coming. If they would have came to her, more than likely that film would never see the light of day. Because she'd want this amount, and she'd need to have this much control etc...

I feel that they should have consulted with her and other family members for authenticity. But, I can see them doing an "Unauthorized" version.

She could have gotten a ghost writer long ago and wrote her father's biography. Then, she probably could have gotten it adapted into a screen play or something.

Now though, it's a "Don't watch it because they didn't give me any money" type of thing.

If you read the article posted it states (or implies) that Rudy Ray Moore entered into a licensing deal with a company in which he apparently was taken advantage of and may have given up his rights.

The daughter has a will making her the executor of the estate of Rudy Ray Moore but that would only include any rights and property he actually owns. If he did in fact sign away these rights she wouldn't be entitled to profits or involvement.

Additionally you don't need the estates permission to do an unauthorized biography particularly if they don't own his material.

This seems to be between her and a company he did business with previously and she's now involved Netflix and Eddie.

Also, don't ever say "smarty-pants" again, that shit reads like you said it with a lisp and a lot of hissing.

Funny thing about cats back then, didn't own a lot of the material they made. Signing blank contracts, not having proper representation and not reading the fine print they gave up millions. So if her father left her 100% of nothing then she doesn't have a leg to stand on. Now neither her father or her made good life choices if after the success Rudy Ray Moore had and she is on welfare, now if I am Eddie or Chris I am not cutting a check, but I would help to get a job and get off welfare for her or her offspring, but I am not cutting a check.

Basically.

And she doesn't even want a check she wants what she assumes to be millions of dollars that she believes she would be entitled to.

Also let's be real here. Dolemite was a "hood legend" who made some material which was popular via word of mouth and with an underground crowd but it isn't as if his albums and blaxploitation flicks were bringing in millions so even if she did own all of his material I can't see it being too profitable.

I wonder if she could successfully have any contracts he'd previously signed prior to her becoming executor deemed invalid after the fact?

If so she may be able to get some quick settlement money out of this which is probably all she wants.

I wouldn't be surprised if Eddie broke her off just out of respect for her pops.

It'll be interesting to hear how things play out. Speaking of contracts, wills, executors, etc ... my mom's beem updating her stuff (will) in recent months. One of her friends fell quite ill, and her older brother (and sister-in-law) have had their issues too. He recovered from a stroke (thankfully) and his wife has been hospitalized for many months after a brain aneurysm and other issues. Still not in the clear at all, and they're not sure when she'll return home. Mom said it would have been terrible for their kids/grandkids had things gone even worse for him with the stroke.

Yeah I've seen it happen to some of the families that I work with and it can be fucked up.

I don't know the details of the actual beef, but this is the first thing that came to mind for me.
Shit. I know a dude who still believes that a one-song rapper from our block owes him $$$$$$$ from the rapper repeating something funny that he said one night to a hustler and put it in a song. Dude still talks about it to this DAY. SMH (Song came out around 86'-87')
People sometimes overestimate the value of their claims.
IMO, I think it's a lack of life accomplishments eating away at them. :dunno:

Agreed. It’s better to minimize and downsize before serious incidents begin happening. Less of a burden on loved one(s) who have to deal with all the affairs and serious decision-making. Just attended a celebration of life last Sunday. You see the impact on families and friends.
