When I first brought my house a common brown bat got in my basement through the furnace flute. I called the local animal shelter to ask if they did free bat removals. They told me that they didn't and that bat was protected under Ohio law. They said If I harm a hair on his head I could be prosecuted. Needless to say he got "evicted" anyway.
