Do you have or know some 1 who has SLEEP APENEA?

That shit aint no joke its like your never fully recharged energy wise so by the middle of the day you are tired like its 11pm @ night...

I was watchin "Big Medicine" and I thought only morbid obese people have this condition(no jokes) because the fat presses against their lungs causing them to continuously wake up and breathe during the night

I GOT A HOMIE WITH THAT SHIT
HE HAS HAD IT FOR YEARS

THE LAST TIME I SAW HIM HE LOOKED LIKE HE WAS ABOUT TO EXPLODE
HES GETTIN EVEN BIGGER.
THAT SHIT IS CRAZY

WE WOULD BE SITTIN THERE TALKN IN THE MIDDLE OR THE DAY
AND HIS ASS WOULD JUST PASS OUT AND START SNORING.
AND THE SNORING....OH MY GOD !

THAT SHIT IS SO LOUD YOU DONT EVEN WAHT TO BE IN THE SAME BUILDING.
I WISH MY DOG WOULD DO SOMTHING ABOUT THAT SHIT.

WE TALKED ABOUT IT BEFORE BUT HE JUST DOIN HIM AND FUCK IT.:smh:

I dont think you have to be obese to have it cause i know this chick that i'm pretty sure has it and she damn sure isnt obese. I think it is a weight thing though not that you have to be obese but its a side effect of being overweight. Fried chicken and Television is a killer.

being over weight is oneway to have it but there are so many factors, youre BMI-BODY MASS INDEX,BUT THE ONLY WAY TO BE TESTED OS TO GO TO A SLEEP RESEARCH CENTER AND STAY THE NIGHT THEY MONITOR YOUR BREATHING AND SLEEP PATTERN WITH A MASK

OK so is this strictly a weight thing? And if not does anyone know of anything that could help it besides the obvious weight loss.

One of my boys has it and he basically has to wear one of these things every night. He's not even overweight.

:smh:

Nah its genetically passed down. The typical candidate is obese.. Reggie white died from it.. I dont think there is anything worse than feeling tired all day long.. You can sleep for 10 hours and its feels like 4.. Lack of sleep causes weight gain/depression thats why a majority of people who have it are also obese.. There is no cure but a gas mask you have to wear every night.

Most people I know that has Sleep Apnea are large people. I know 2 females that has it, which are obese, but the guys that I know that has it, aren't fat, but ALL have played football, either on the College level or Professional level, and they all have large necks.

I use to date a guy with it, and I would never stay the night, because I didn't want to hear the machine, and I damn sure didn't want him to die with me being there, by not wearing it.

I do know it's very serious.

A co-worker of mine suffers from that...he's not obese, but a little over weight, and being that we drive the bus, MTA will not let him drive unless he get's medical clearance....Doctors told him to get that machine, but he told me that machine is mad expensive.

Sleep Apnea aint no joke bredren,

I had that shit a few years ago between the ages 20-22 and I was not overweight. I was around 6 ft and 190lb. I don´t know how I got it but I know eating unhealthy contributed to the problem.

It got so bad that I could sleep 8 hours a day and wake up feeling like I only slept 30 minutes. Not enough sleep limits your mental capacity especially memorization (I blame sleep apnea for my bad grades in college LOL!) I still remember nights where I used to wake up chocking, (My lab results indicated that I stopped breathing 30 times an hour) :smh: I kept telling myself I was too young to die and there was something out there that could be done.

I ended up getting my tonsils and adnoids(sp?) removed and that normalized the problem. Another possible solution was to sleep with a fucking mask on over my face. That´s something certainly Not Sexy in your twenties so that was most definitely out of the question. Granted I was too young to be going through shit that 40+ year olds go through. I couldn´t imagine comming home from a club with a chick and she asked ´what´s that fucking gas mask doing next to your bed?´

They say sleep apnea is non-curable but it can be mitigated. 4 years removed from surgery, I still feel normal and sleep normal. Ive been told that I only snore a little when I sleep on my back.

That shit is serious and I encourage anyone who think they have trouble breathing while asleep to please visit a doctor. You know that´s how Reggie White died.

Heathcliziffffff

i used to have it and it was because i used to be overweight... so i got me the machine... and insurance pay for that mofo.. if they didnt i would have stole it lol

but i still uses it because even thought i lost all that weight.. the dr hasnt clear me from it not using it

u can tell whom is at a risk for sleep apena.. the mofo who snores like a train that be chugging and chuggin and stop... it aint no fun

after u get the machine.. u w ill be able sleep good and wake up fresh

also it should be noted that Reggie White die from that (sleep apena)

So if u got sleeping issue.. dont be putting it off cuz it can cause heart failure

u gotta take a sleeping test.. and they will tell u if u are at risk or not

i got diagnosed with mixed sleep apnea while in the army. didnt even know about it till i got married and my wife was sayin that i choke and stop breathing in my sleep, especially on my back. had a sleep study done at walter reed. i stopped breathin 87 times in a 6-hour period. 8 of those was my brain forgettin to tell my body to breathe. got a lil surgery done and got a cpap machine. luckily, tha wifey was more concerned with my life than how sexy i looked in bed. when i got out in '02, i got an outomatic 50% from tha VA. but on tha real, i aint neva been overweight or out of shape, i have been an athlete since grade school. so i dont know how tha shit happened. but, if ya read up on sleep apnea, it can lead to anything from, high blood, pressure, to heart attacks, to depression , and strokes. not to mention ya ass just dyin in ya sleep cuz you choke to death!!! so, if ya girl tell ya that u snore alot, go get that shit checked out!!

I was diagnosed 5 years ago after going to the doctor after damn near killing myself falling asleep at the wheel. Apnea is not to be confused with narcolepsy although both are serious as shit. I did the sleep study and got the CPAP machine. I rock the pussy, putting ole girl to sleep and then mask up.

True dat.

One of the dangers of becoming overweight is developing sleep apnea. If you can't get to whats called REM sleep, you just can't function. Not to mention after a while your organs can't function properly either. If you suspect you might have that problem, get some medical treatment as soon as you can. Don't sit around drinking some concoction you read about on the net thinking it will go away.

see, this is why i fukks with this board. you dudes drop knowledge on EVERYTHING. respect to everyone who posted their experience with this. yeah, like trufiction my best friend has that shyt bad. son weighs 4 bills, give or take. ive been on some serious workout shyt this year so im gonna get him to roll with me and see if that helps any

yea, I read up on sleep apnea and after I first heard about it, I thought I had it.. well, I still think I have it.. but that test is crazy expensive being that I don't have health insurance just yet. And I don't think I'm overweight or in totally horrible physical condition It kinda sucks though, cuz it makes me not want to spend the night out, cuz its always an inconvenience to others. One time a guy spent the night and he was a light sleeper, and he left in the middle of the night... that kinda sux :smh:  I've been teased alot about my snoring, but at this time, its not something I can change, but I do want to!!! :(

Alot of folks make the mistake of thinking that you have to be obese to have sleep apnea. More people have it but have never been diagnosed (Heavy snoring is also a indication of apnea). Basically you stop breathing in your sleep and in severe cases it is deadly. I was diagnosed with it about a year ago and my case is a result of having sarcoidosis (the disease that killed Reggie White). Sarcoid is similar to the more well known Lupus in that it can effect every part of the body. Sarcoid comes on like pneumonia in a lot of cases and most people get misdiagnosed and it goes away...for a while. I was fortunate to have a Doctor that followed up very closely and after a series of x-rays sent me to a specialist. The only way to combat it is with steriods or some cancer fighting drugs. I would highly recommend getting a yearly physical to include chest x-rays and bloodwork. If I had not taken the steps that my doctor recommended, I'd probably be in really bad shape now. Reggie refused (by all accounts) to take his meds and instead put his fate in God's hands. I seriously thought about doing the same until one day I was in the waiting room at the doctor's office and I stood up and it felt like my chest exploded. I couldn't talk, was barely able to breathe and damn near shit myself...no joke. After about 8 hours and multiple shots of nitroglycerin, morphine and who knows what else the shit just went away. The apnea started last year because the sarcoid has dimished my lung capacity by about 40%. I have to use the mask when it's really humid or the air quality is poor. On bad days walking a single flight a steps can be a B---ch! And staying awake is not an option. Your body just shuts down.

I HAD sleep apena. It's not a weight thing either. Mine had to do with my tonsoils closing the passage to my throat which made me stop breathing and I wake up all through the night. But when I was in training my roommate complained about my snoring and that's how I found out I had it. So I had the mask they showed earlier and then I got the surgury. They said either get the surgury or they were gonna kick me out the military. I sleep fine now and the military paid for everything. I can still claim it as a disability when I get out.

I had the surgery so I could go to Korea. The surgery worked for 3 months and I started getting tired again. I had another sleep study and it confirmed I had the same problem. I was slapped with a C code keeping me from oveseas assignments so I retired. Only good thing is my 50% disability rating.

It sucks sleeping with a mask. That mask is like crack though. If you miss a night you are ten times more tired the next morning.

that shit is a trip. its been 9 yrs now with 8 sleep studies and 2 surgeries under my belt on it. nope, not fat at all. it's just something can effect anyone. the VA did me right though.

Im a firefighter and know quit a few guys that wear the CPAP mask. Most of them are obese but a few are actually slim dudes. All of them are heavy snorers.

This board is the truth!!
I just got diagnosed with that s&^t 2 weeks ago after wifey stressed me about snoring and going to the Dr. So I did the sleep study thing an all, i dont know how many times i stopped breathing..but they said i stopped for like 10 seconds. Just the thought of not breathing in my sleep was scarey enough.. i can check out anytime. A tech suppose to stop by the crib and drop of the machine and adjust the proper air flow sometimes this week.
Yo im so tight right now!!! Im def on the chubby side, so im on the treadmill every day now. Dr also said surgery is 50/50... a lot of times it just comes back.
On the real....i was gonna cheat tonigth and not work out, and then i see thi s freakin post! So i guess i best jump on treadmil right now..i'll catch yall lata.
No porn tonight :(

I had an uncle with sleep apnea. He came home from work one day, sat down in his favorite chair to take a nap, and never woke up. That shit's no joke.

I had it my freshmen year in college. I can remember taking a physical science exam (11 to 11:39), telling my gf I'd see her later on that night, going out to eat (12 to 12:56), and then going back to my room. I had an exam at 2 that afternoon, so I tried studying. I went to my computer, logged in to look at my notes, and went over to my bed for some reason. Fell asleep and didn't wake up until 6 that evening (yes, I missed the test).

I'm not obese in any sense of the word, and actually run two miles every other day. I've been snoring horribly since I was a kid, though. I can recall making an aunt cry because she didn't want to kick me out of her bed (age 4), but didn't want to stay up listening to me sleep the whole night. I haven't gotten an official diagnostic, but a cardiologist friend of mine said I had the symptoms of a person suffering from it. Running (aka exercising) certainly helps. At some point I'm going to get my tonsils removed.

So yeah, it can pretty much strike anyone.

This is not a "fat" issue, but a "neck" issue (in addition to tonsils, adnoids, etc).

I'm glad the Fam is tuned into this- I was in denial for quite a while until I got the test, then a bit more until wifey happily noted that I didn't snore any more.
FWIW, they have masks much smaller and more comfortable than the one depicted. Actually using the device was much easier than anticipating using it. Toughest thing for me to get used to is having detailed dreams every single night. I guess that means I'm spending more time in REM.

Kudos to the Fam for looking out for a brotha's health.

Both my parents have it. My old man just went to a sleep study last night. They have serious sleeping problem and the oxygen they dont get from sleeping they try to get from eating food. Its a vicious cycle. ALOT of blacks have it. I may concentrate on it in med school this fall. If I dig anything good up ill tell yall

i honestly dont think tonsils aint got shyt to do it cuz my tonsils have been out since i was 6 years old.... so 31 years later...

yup u aint lying if u dont have that machine ya body gonna bytch slap u!!

it help take vitamins and excercise

but yo to the poster about dreams.. good lawd u aint lying.. be waking up with a full blown hard on and girlfriend ready to do work lol so i kinda glad about the machine

need to get a portable one now since technology changed

My dad was neva around came home from jail and started calling out the blue.. I found out i got sleep apnea from his ass.. He did put me on 2 some vital vitamins:::

MELATONIN
BLACK SEED OIL(ALL NATURE STORE)
SLEEPY TIME TEA

That shit made a huge difference^^^^^ ...

Cpap caused me to lose out on alot ass in my life time.. If they aint coming to the crib im not getting caught falling asleep ova some 1s crib and loosing a whole following day to sleep(yall feel me)

My insurance company told me I had to get a recent sleep study b4 my tonsils and androids are removed.. then a week later they tell me I have to be insured with them for a year and half b4 they pay 4 it... wtf isnt this life threating.. I cant wait till the "sicko" movie exposes there asses

Yeah, I had it. I am 6'3" and was about 375lbs. The first thing I did was have the surgery. My ENT took out my tonsils, adnoids and that little thing that hangs down in the back of my throat, my uvula. I then lost some fuckin weight. I went from 375 to 240. It was one of the best things I've ever done. I couldn't sleep at night and couldn't stay awake during the day. I had a constant weeze that sounded like I was snoring when I was wide awake. It improves your quality of life. When I had it people thought I was 50 years old and after the surgery they thought I was in my 20s.

I had the same thing around 7 years ago. I was 6'4 and 220 lbs. Not overweight at all. I had my uvula removed and deviated septum surgery and it cleared up.

Yo fam yall are scaring the shit out of me. I'm a big dude and I got sleep apnea. Problem is I can't take the mask at night so I never used it. My doctor gave me a few nose spays (nasacort aq). I don't believe it's done much. I do believe my throat is some of my problem. My adnoids hangs down on my tongue ,and when I get a cold shit be hectic. waking up catching your breath and all that. I had a sleep study. I gotta do something soon tho. falling to sleep at work and long drives is another problem. :smh:
